At one point I forgot who this was about and then I went Oh. Dang.

I can't remember that Katniss was this irritating the first time I read Catching Fire. She was like a whiny child, only seeing what she wanted.
The story however was expertly executed, and gripping as ever.

I was not a fan the first time I read this. I reread it to see all the connections with the new Sunrise prequel, and though I enjoyed the Covey ties, I‘m still not a fan. I feel like the book is way too long, and yet somehow she rushed the ending. My least favorite of the series, though it does give an interesting perspective from the Capitol. Snow is such a deeply selfish person, but I do think Dr. Gaul is an incredible villain.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.25
President Snow‘s backstory. Particularly happy I procrastinated on this one, finally reading it after completing the newest installment, Sunrise on the Reaping.
The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” by Suzanne Collins 🎧
I am usually not particularly fond of villain origin stories. But I enjoyed this book. It raised questions of choices, and of being too much inside own‘s head. The descent from sincerity into selfishness felt a little too steep to me. Music is a central theme in this book. This book gave a lot of context to what happened in the original trilogy and made sense of certain obsessions.
Back in 2011 I also jumped on the Hunger Games hype and read all 3 books in a matter of days.
I've decided to re-read them before jumping on the prequel bandwagon, just to have all these events fresh in my mind going into the lives of Snow and Haymitch.
These books are hyped for a reason, even though I knew exactly what would happen, I still couldn't put the book down.
This remains my favorite of the series. Life after the first games, the increased political subterfuge, and the return of so many wonderful characters, all make for a great read. It absolutely holds up on rereading and now hits even harder after reading Sunrise on the Reaping.
#sundayfunday worse than movie tie in covers for me are when there is a sudden change in cover design midway through a series that I'm buying.
This was better than I thought it‘d be. I disliked the ending most; I always felt like Mockingjay‘s ending was rushed, and this felt similar. Still a good read if you like the Hunger Games books!
As soon as I finished the Sunrise prequel I had to reread this. I hadn‘t realized it had been 10 years since the last reread. There‘s so much more weight to the story with the Haymitch backstory. It broke my heart to see the parallels to see between the two characters. I can‘t get over what an incredible addition Sunrise was to the series.
