I had higher hopes for this book, as I was very interested in the interracial adoption storyline, but I felt the story really dragged. It took me ages to read. At least it fulfilled some prompts! The parts I did love was the exploration of adoption trauma, and an example of how inhumane our immigration system is (saying more would border in spoiler territory).

Cinfhen I liked it when I read it but recently @BarbaraBB read it and she had VERY similar thoughts like yours 2mo
BarbaraBB That‘s right @Cinfhen I felt it dragging along too unfortunately 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2mo
marleed Oh I read this one a few months back. It was a slow pick for me. I erred on the side of a pic because the storyline was an immigration experience I had not considered - and I really like to learn from immigration stories. But the book itself did drag. 2mo

This epic fantasy is solidly based in real China / Japan relations during the 20th century. At the same time, the main character has meaningful development as she transforms from a rural orphan to a military neophyte. She‘s charming and smart, if also completely beyond her depth. The fantasy aspects are rooted in Chinese culture and myth. Overall a win!

BarbaraTheBibliophage Decided to go alternate China for this prompt — not realizing how historically based this book is. @Cinfhen @4thhouseontheleft 3mo
Lexeegee Great book. I have read the first two of the series. Looking forward to the third. 3mo
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Lexeegee My plan is to dive into book two this month!! 3mo

I really enjoyed this historical novel, from China in the 1930s to present day US. Learned a lot about that period too. A really good read.

This was my first book by Lisa See (apparently I live under a rock), and I‘m gutted. Beautifully written but positively heartbreaking all the way through… the story of women in 19th century China and the story of a beautiful relationship between two girls throughout their lives. The hardships that women suffered in that time and place their whole lives are horrifying and foreign, but See‘s characters are so painfully relatable as humans.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

sprainedbrain This was my #AAM #AuthorAMonth book for March @Soubhiville and also my #SetInChina book for #Booked2022. 3mo
KristiAhlers Her books are always emotional reads. I haven‘t read this one though. I‘ll have to stack it. 3mo
julieclair Great review. Spot on. 👍 3mo

I'm really enjoying this series. In the 2nd one, China wants Temeraire to return; so him, Laurence and their crew set off to Temeraire's place of birth 🐉

I love Lisa See! As usual for one of her books, I learned new things about a corner of women‘s history I was previously unaware of, and I cried. #AuthorAMonth #Booked2022 #SetInChina @Soubhiville @BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cinfhen @4thhouseontheleft

IndoorDame @Cinfhen that one‘s definitely in my TBR. I kind of love that she‘s written so many things I haven‘t read yet and get to look forward to. 4mo
Cinfhen It was such a fascinating story about the hill tribes but it did feel a little too long at some parts 4mo

This book was beyond fascinating!! It‘s what @rockpools calls a #GoogleyBook 🤓SO MANY rabbit holes 🐰In the Yunnan Province of China lives the Akha People, where tradition & tribal customs rule; it‘s also a region where valuable pu‘er tea is harvested & cultivated. This story follows Li-Yan as she grows from a poor child to a successful business woman spanning many decades. At times overwrought & overwritten, I still enjoyed #AAM #SetInChina

squirrelbrain Great review! I have this on hold at the library but may not get to it this month, as I‘m going to read this one first. 4mo
rockpools I agree! Once I‘d got past the #OverwroughtAndOverwritten 🙄 (new one for you!) I enjoyed this a lot. And yes, I did Google. 4mo
Cinfhen I really enjoyed this immersive story @squirrelbrain @rockpools 4mo

5th in inspector Chen series finds him as always in the dilemma of his poetic + intellectual drawing him to academia while two crimes take up his time including a serial killer with a supply of the iconic dress. This series is filled with Chinese culture from the confuscian poetry, to the cultural revolution but most of all the incredible descriptions of food. Perfect for-

andrew61 @LeahBergen @merelybookish Yes they stand out and I'm on a bit of a slow hunt now for them when I'm in charity shop. I love the colour and the art on the covers. 4mo
andrew61 @ReadingOver50 @EvieBee They aren't the strongest mysterys but the culture is fascinating. I'd definitely recommend for the picture of life in the closed society. 4mo

This was a NF book about See‘s family, dating right back to the 1870s when her great-grandfather immigrated to the US from China

The earlier parts were fascinating but the book is very long and the later parts became a bit same-y. I also felt quite a distance from all of the characters, which is odd when it is her family. Still a good pick though.

This is partly #setinchina so I‘m using this for #booked2022 too.

Cinfhen Woohoo!! I‘ve tried a few books by this author and I agree, they are missing something 4mo
Cinfhen And they all seem to drag 😳 4mo
