My little group of books I read for #Booked2022 from July - Aug - Sept. Hey folks - just a couple of hours to go before we close the drawing for this season! Don‘t forget that each book read counts as an entry.

BarbaraTheBibliophage @julieclair Glad to help! Even if you‘d forgotten, you could have included the July-Sept books in the next drawing. But it‘s good to stay on track too! 2y

Banned Books Week! And my selection was the top challenged book of 2021 🤬. Including a whole diatribe and campaign against this book by my state‘s LT Gov (who sits on NC‘s State Board of Education)

I am grateful to Maia‘s courage to publish this memoir, and I have seen first hand it‘s impact on non-binary genderqueer and exploring teens in my kid‘s friend group. This is MJ‘s favorite book of the year, and I can see why. It also provides ⬇️⬇️

alisiakae So much helpful information and perspective to cisgender parents & others who may be trying to understand what it FEELS like to be non-binary and/or gender queer. Maia explains eir experiences in a way that I think would help a lot of people better understand how gender is not binary. (edited) 2y
alisiakae #bbrc #bannedorchallenged @LibrarianRyan I‘ve filled the #bookex2022 #comingoutstory prompt already but this would be a great option for that prompt also! @Cinfhen @BarbaraTheBibliophage 2y
LibrarianRyan I love this book. I thought it was so well done. 2y

alisiakae @LibrarianRyan SO well done! And I loved the books included and mentioned! Added some of those to my TBR. Especially this one 2y
Cinfhen Great review!! I‘ve heard WONDERFUL things about this book!!! 2y
alisiakae @Cinfhen thank you!! So my brave child spoke out with me a few months ago about a town commissioner who compared queer people to pedophiles and predators. Her statement was never aired (part of mine was), but in July she read this book right in front of him at one of my meetings. 😂😂 https://www.wccbcharlotte.com/2022/03/31/huntersville-politicians-get-into-socia... 2y
Cinfhen #RebelReader #Warrior way to go Alisia & props to M!!! 🙌🏻 2y

Still on catchup reviews. This may be is one of my favourites of the year.

A coming-of-age/ #ComingOutStory. Chinese-American Lily, growing up in McCarthy-era San Francisco, discovers a world beyond Chinatown. But with her family at risk of deportation if they show signs of non-Americanness, how can she be her true self?

Immaculately researched, with characters you can really feel for. Described as YA, reads as historical fiction. #Booked2022

Cinfhen Stunning photo and gorgeous review!! I‘m definitely going to get to this book as it was on my #NewYearWhoDis list from @MallenNC 2y
yash_sy Hi,
My name is Yash Patel, a UX designer by profession. I am designing an app for avid readers like you, where you can borrow & lend your books over the internet across the city/state level. For this, I am conducting the survey. I would appreciate it if you spare a few minutes and participate in this survey.

jenniferw88 @Cinfhen @4thhouseontheleft @BarbaraTheBibliophage just changed the prompt for #booked2022 as I don't think I'm going to get to my China book, and this one is set in China(town)! And I'm sure I'll find another #comingoutstory! 2y
rockpools You‘ve reminded me I still need to review this one. I really enjoyed it! 2y
Cinfhen I‘ve heard great things about this one!! 2y
Cortg I‘m glad you liked it! I‘m waiting for my daughter to finish before I start it. Hopefully she finishes before she heads back to school 🙄 2y
KarenUK I love the prompt use (Chinatown!) I think I might steal that idea! 2y

This contemporary YA is definitely written for the teen demographic and is a bit angsty, but I loved how the story delves into the different kinds of love, and how platonic love can be just as powerful as romantic love. There is a great cast of characters I absolutely adored, and the diversity and authenticity of the characters was so refreshing!
#booked2022 #comingoutstory
#pop22 #aboutasecret (would also be perfect for the asexual prompt)

BarbaraTheBibliophage Awww. Sounds lovely! 2y

I got a rare and unique insight in #EquatorialGuinea, a country I knew nothing about, a country that never makes the news. Having said that, the story was not written well. It‘s about the coming out of a girl, being a so called “man-woman”. I appreciate the book though for learning about this small country.

Cinfhen Kudos for finding a book for this country!! I took an awesome graffiti street tour in Shoreditch a few years back😍So fun and more sunny days ♥️ 2y

I‘m not sure what I was expecting but this memoir was full of surprises. Omar Sharif Jr reflects on growing up as the grandson of iconic Egyptian film star Omar Sharif while also being raised by his maternal Jewish grandparents, both of whom were Holocaust survivors. Raised in Montreal, Sharif (half Muslim) attended Jewish Day school, had a Bar Mitzvah, affectionately called his grandparents Bubbi & Zaide and hid from EVERYONE that he was gay.👇🏼

Cinfhen This is his coming out story, as well as a love letter to Egypt, where he is no longer allowed to visit for fear of retribution for his homosexuality. Sharif lays bare some terrifying situations he found himself in, his road to becoming an activist, the backlash he received from both the gay & straight communities and how he found his personal freedom. 2y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Not a memoir I would have thought twice about…but the content sounds great. Stacking. 2y

Cinfhen The writing is pretty average but the story is pretty remarkable. Such a blending of cultures and identities @Riveted_Reader_Melissa 2y
Megabooks Not sure if I‘m up for more memoirs, but this sounds interesting! 2y
Cortg Ooh! I put this on my TBR recently. Love a good memoir story. 2y
Cinfhen It was just okay @Megabooks I found it very interesting that he was raised in an Orthodox religious community given his other family background. You can wait for a rainy day to pick this up. It was short though and there was some really crazzzy stuff that happens to him. He becomes a personal assistant to a Saudi sheik and that part was pretty lascivious 2y
Cinfhen It‘s just a very unusual set of identities that OSJ deals with @Cortg and that does make for a good story 2y
BarbaraBB All those prompts! Well done 👌🏽 2y
Cinfhen Totally worth it for all the challenge prompts @BarbaraBB 😂😂 2y
Cinfhen Although his Egypt involves palaces, yachts, cooks, drivers, swimming pools and private planes @BarbaraBB not the most realistic view of Africa 2y
BarbaraBB Omar‘s reality 😜 2y
Butterfinger Wow! I need to read this book. 2y
Librarybelle Wow! I had not even heard of this one! 2y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Glad to know this one is worth the time! 2y
Smrloomis Wow, totally missed this! Glad you posted it here 😊 2y
Cinfhen I‘ll be curious to hear your thoughts if you get to it @Smrloomis I found it while searching for a book about Egypt @Librarybelle @Butterfinger although I didn‘t learn too much about the country I did appreciate hearing Omar‘s story @BarbaraTheBibliophage 2y

I think this is one of the sweetest and cutest GN romances I have ever read! It reminds me a lot of Bloom, another m/m GN romance. I can see why Maya and her friends are currently obsessed with this series! #lgbtq2021 #comingoutstory
