Many entered as juveniles & now as adults are forced to deal with technology & obstacles they‘ve never encountered before. It‘s an eye-opening read with interesting statistics & personal stories of triumphs & set backs. Highly recommended!

I enjoyed hearing/listening to Ibtihaj Muhammad‘s journey from HS athlete to Olympian. She did throw plenty of shade around but I‘m sure her frustration over years of micro & macro aggressions were stressful, hateful & difficult to endure. Kudos to Ibtihaj for showing grit and fortitude. #NF22 #ImAnAthlete @Riveted_Reader_Melissa She does visit #Tunisia so I‘m cheating & using this for #ReadingAfrica22

This was an eye-opening, heartbreaking read written by a female journalist in 1887. Nellie Bly had herself (all too easily) committed to NYC insane asylum to expose the horrific treatment shown to the patients, many who were completely SANE. Another powerful memoir read for #ReadingAfrica22 - Abdul Musa Adam was only 6 years old when his entire family, except for a 3 year old brother is killed by insurgents in #Sudan. Only 2 adults survived the massacre and the 4 flee by foot to #Chad. In Chad Abdul becomes separated from his brother as he journeys to #Libya then France & eventually UK. This is an amazing book of courage, resilience and unspeakable experiences. Inspiring & emotional.

This book hooked me from page one! Although it was published in the early aughts and covers mostly the years between 1990-2001 it‘s nonetheless timely & compelling. A blend of personal memoir mixed with the rough political history of #Zimbabwe, it‘s people & leaders, I couldn‘t turn the pages fast enough. So much corruption, danger, turmoil and even beauty are deftly described and detailed in this personal narrative. Easily 5 stars for me.
