#ABookTokRecommendation

Pickpick

I think I share the same views as many Littens on this book from the #tob shortlist. I loved the language / linguistics elements (how clever to be able to dream up such a storyline?!) but found the colonialism debate rather heavy-handed.

It did feel a bit YA in places to me, despite all of the deaths, so I‘m not sure it deserves to be on the shortlist. I did thoroughly enjoy it though, which I didn‘t expect to do!

squirrelbrain #pop23 #abooktokrecommendation - I did a search in case this was on #booktok as I don‘t have a clue about such things and yay - it is! https://www.theguardian.com/books/2022/sep/08/babel-the-booktok-sensation-that-m... (edited) 1y

BarbaraBB I‘m using it for Booktok as well. Great review. I agree about the YA. It reads abut like Harry Potter with a lot more violence and deaths 1y
Ruthiella I‘m almost finished with it and my assessment mirrors yours: clever but heavy handed. 👍 1y
Megabooks I can see what you‘re saying about YA, but I do think it deserves to be on the shortlist. I certainly enjoyed it more than a lot of the others! 1y
Amiable Well done! 👍🏼👍🏼 1y
TrishB I‘m glad you enjoyed it though, always a plus! 1y
Cortg Great review! I have the audio on hold. I keep pausing the hold though, so hopefully the stars will aline and I'll be able to get to this one sooner than later :) 1y
julesG Good to see you enjoyed it. 1y
kwmg40 Nice review. I agree that it feels a bit YA in places. 1y
Hooked_on_books That‘s great that you enjoyed it! Honestly, with the beating message about violence in the last bit, I almost panned it. That turned my stomach so much. 1y
squirrelbrain Yes! @BarbaraBB - that‘s the perfect description! 1y
squirrelbrain The end felt rather jarring @Hooked_on_books - and rather a personality change for Robin too; it didn‘t quite fit. 1y
Suet624 Glad you enjoyed it. I have this stacked but I just haven't been inspired to find it yet 1y
Cinfhen I just got caught up in the power of words and their meanings, which I thought was both clever and fascinating. Many of the other books from the list are either trying to be different or are so ordinary- I feel like this one is amongst the better contenders🤷🏼‍♀️ 1y
quietlycuriouskate I've got 🐿️SquirrelMail🐿️! Thank you, Helen ❤️ 1y
squirrelbrain You‘re welcome Kate! I forgot to put the card in the parcel 🤦‍♀️ so you should have a card from me too…! @kathedron 1y

Verity | Colleen Hoover

Pickpick

Oops - forgot to include this on my #bookreport. I only finished it last night so maybe that shows how memorable it was. 😬 Actually, I quite liked it. Never having read this author before I was unsure what to expect. It started off quite fluffy and then turned very dark, very quickly. (TW - child cruelty)

I don‘t do social media so no TikTok but the author‘s name appeared when I did a search so I‘m using this for #pop22 #abooktokrecommendation

thegirlwiththelibrarybag Tiktok does indeed have a Colleen Hoover obsession (an It Ends With Us obsession specifically, it‘s not often you see a book become an overnight sensation 5 or so years after it originally published) 2y
squirrelbrain I think I‘ll get away with it for the prompt then Sharni! @thegirlwiththelibrarybag 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I'm not on TikTok but I've seen it all over other social media so I say it's a justified pick. 2y

KarenUK Definitely works for TikTok….. As a result, she is the biggest selling author at Barnes & Noble this year so far, by a mile! 2y
Megabooks I‘m not on booktok either and just followed @Cinfhen ‘s lead. 😂😂 I‘m old and out of touch! 2y
Cinfhen This was my BookTok choice for #pop22 but I did NOT like this book 🥺I found it really disappointing and slightly disturbing 2y
squirrelbrain I didn‘t realise you read this one too @Cinfhen - it was rather disturbing but I just treated it as a bit of a ‘trashy‘ read, if that‘s not rude to the author. 😬 2y
squirrelbrain Some of us are ‘down with the kids‘, hey @KarenUK 🤪and some of us are just not @Megabooks 🤣 (and I never have been!) 2y
TheLudicReader I am with you @Cinfhen Blech. 2y
Cinfhen Thanks @TheLudicReader BLECH is the perfect word choice ☺️ 2y
Cinfhen I get what you mean, Helen but I think erotic thrillers aren‘t my thing 😛 2y
squirrelbrain The ‘erotic‘ bits were rather cringe 😬 @Cinfhen ! 2y
squirrelbrain LOL @TheLudicReader but a great one-word description! 🤣 2y
TheLudicReader @squirrelbrain I think I am the only person on the planet that thinks CH is a terrible writer. Lol. 2y
KarenUK For work purposes, I really ought to read CH, but still haven‘t! 😂🤦‍♀️ (after seeing some of your reviews it put me off!) @Cinfhen @Megabooks @squirrelbrain 2y
squirrelbrain @TheLudicReader @KarenUK - that was my first CH and, whilst it was OK, I‘m not sure I‘d rush to read any more. 2y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks It was dark, but I liked it! 🖤 2y
Caroline2 Hmm, I‘ve had this on my kindle a while. Wonder what I‘ll make of it after reading all the comments….! 😬 2y
squirrelbrain I think it was cheap / free on Kindle a while ago @Caroline2 - otherwise I‘m sure I wouldn‘t have bought it otherwise! 2y
Caroline2 Yeah I‘m think I got it on a 99p deal too. 👍 2y

The Song of Achilles | Madeline Miller

Pickpick

I think I read The Iliad in high school, or at least pretended to read it & discussed it in class, but you know what I certainly remember? Brad Pitt in a leather mini-skirt so the movie Troy was playing in my head alongside this audiobook. I can see why Patroclus is in love with Achilles, and thus why we get his account of Achilles, but Patroclus felt a bit one-dimensional to me. This was enjoyable & a nice reminder of the bones of the myth ⬇️

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick surrounding Achilles. Hell, I had to remind myself that he wasn‘t a real man from history. On audio, a few of the people got a little muddled up to me, but overall this was well narrated, interesting, and definitely a love song to Achilles. 2y
Cinfhen Great review!!! I need to check out the Brad Pitt film 🥰 2y
Cinfhen I LOVED this book!!! My favorite from all the re-telling I‘ve read 😊 2y
TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!!! 2y

I loved the premise. As I was reading I couldn‘t decide if I thought this was living up to the hype or not, but I found the ending really satisfying, which is actually unusual for me, so I think I‘ve decided it‘s earned it‘s lauded reputation. #NewYearWhoDis #PopSugar2022 #ABookTokRecommendation @jen_the_scribe @monalyisha
