The Hiding Place
The Hiding Place | Corrie ten Boom, Elizabeth Sherrill, John Sherrill
The True Story of a Real-Life HeroIt's World War II. Darkness has fallen over Europe as the Nazis spread hatred, fear and war across the globe. But on a quiet city corner in the Netherlands, one woman fights against the darkness. In her quiet watchmaking shop, she and her family risk their lives to hide Jews, and others hunted by the Nazis, in a secret room, a "hiding place" that they built in the old building. One day, however, Corrie and her family are betrayed. They're captured and sent to the notorious Nazi concentration camps to die. Yet even in that darkest of places, Corrie still fights. This is her story--and the story of how faith, hope and love ultimately triumphed over unthinkable evil.

This true story about a family preserving in love and faith during the occupation in Holland during World War II is one of my favorites yet! I often paused while reading this book to reflect on the horrors, the goodness, the joy, the fear and the experiences of all of the characters and am amazed at the work of my awesome God in such a deep darkness.

Suet624 I agree. An important memoir. 2w

So my word for this year is “Fearless”. Fear is something I‘ve struggled with forever, so I‘m reading/listening to books of Fearless characters and man was this a good one to start with! I have always had a fascination with the Nazi regime and concentration camps, but I didn‘t know anything about Holland during that time! Truly a Fearless story if I‘ve ever read one!

A quote from the autobiography of Corrie ten Boom, a very active member of the Dutch Resistance during World War II. She and her family hid Jews in their home. She was arrested and eventually sent to Ravensbruck concentration camp along with her sister, Betsie. Betsie has an incredible amount of faith in the Bible and it was helpful for me to read how she applied it and how it sustained her during such a dark time. A must read. #resist

Suet624 @Reggie I always wondered how people managed to survive the concentration camps. She doesn‘t dwell on the horrors of it but I loved knowing how she used her faith to get her through. I‘m pretty sure I‘d be the one complaining miserably in the corner. (edited) 13mo
Reggie I‘m right there with you Sue. One summer, my friend who was getting his Masters in Civil Engineering waited until the last minute to start his project so there I was in 110 heat shoveling gravel and sand and measuring out water to make a beam while he did “calculations.” I complained so much he finally just said,”Look, I‘m sorry that all the projects with teddy bears were taken!!!” So I can‘t even imagine being in a concentration camp. 13mo
Suet624 @Reggie that‘s a riot. I love that story. Now I‘ll just ease on over to the couch where life is easy and troubles are far away. 😂😂💕 13mo

Another unknown-to-me title for #novemberbythenumbers. Book by corrie #ten Boom

Corrie was a Dutch watchmaker who became a heroine of the Resistance, a survivor of Hitler's concentration camps, and one of the most remarkable evangelists of the twentieth century. she and her family risked their lives to help Jews and underground workers escape from the Nazis. Only Corrie survived to tell the story of how faith triumphs over evil - from back cover

This book has been on my TBR for what seems like my entire life. I remember my mom talking about Corrie Ten Boom when I was a child in the seventies. Since then, I have read many books about the Holocaust, and this book deserves its place among the most revered. Corrie's positive message and willingness to put herself in danger to do God's work are truly inspiring. This is a reminder of how quickly life can change.

Moving book about a Dutch family helping Jewish people during WWII. I was afraid of the religious overtones of it because that's not usually my thing but it is done in a way that completely fits the story without being "in your face" about it.

shawnmooney This book had a profound influence on me when I was a teenager. The older I get, the more secular my outlook; I wonder if the religious bits would bother me today? I certainly have a soft spot for it all these years later… 2y

The Hiding Place is original, enlightening, and thought - provoking. Really made me think about the current Syrian refugee crisis and if I'd hide people if my own life would be put in danger.
