Sweet Tooth Vol. 1: Out of the Deep Woods
Sweet Tooth Vol. 1: Out of the Deep Woods | Jeff Lemire
38 posts | 58 read | 37 to read
Following on the heels of THE NOBODY, his Vertigo graphic novel debut, writer/artist Jeff Lemire pens his very first ongoing series Sweet Tooth. A cross between Bambi and Cormac McCarthy's The Road, SWEET TOOTH tells the story of Gus, a rare new breed of human/animal hybrid children, has been raised in isolation following an inexplicable pandemic that struck a decade earlier. Now, with the death of his father he's left to fend for himself . . . until he meets a hulking drifter named Jepperd who promises to help him. Jepperd and Gus set out on a post-apocalyptic journey into the devastated American landscape to find 'The Preserve' a refuge for hybrids. This unique and haunting new series is written and illustrated by Eisner-nominated creator Lemire (The Essex County Trilogy) and colored by fellow Eisner nominee Jose Villarubia.

That was pretty good, though up to the point I've watched, I think the Netflix adaptation is better as it's taken more time to develop the back story, though that may well be addressed in later editions of the comic. Still, 4🦌, and I'll read the next volume if the library has it, but I'll cope ok if they haven't.

Started this today, but forced myself to stop at 61% for a couple of reasons. First, I'm supposed to be prepping for our 1st cub scout pack meeting of the school year. And second, I'm blowing through it too fast, and not sure when I can get a hold of vol. 2. This series isn't on my library`s Libby, and this is the only vol. available through #PrimeReading. That's how they get ya! Will have to go through library loans. I miss disposable income.

That was terrifying. Much darker than I anticipated (expectations set by Netflix trailer).

I will continue with both the original series and start the televised version.

Love this graphic novel. Good pandemic reading. RDJ and his wife produced the Netflix show based on this series, which starts next month.

Book mail is the best kind of mail! ? "The Rock From the Sky" is an early review book from @LibraryThing thank you so much! It looks so good! I saw the preview for the "Sweet Tooth" tv show and thought it looked good, so why not buy it? ? Have you read it? Are you looking forward to the tv show?

I thought I was being greedy this week and put the first three of Jeff Lemire's Sweet Tooth series on hold and now I wish I'd taken all of them out. It's so good. Good art, good science fiction.

Do any other #writersoflitsy wish they'd written something they were reading? I don't feel it very often, but when I do, it's the worst ache.

Haaaallo everyone. Here's a discussion thread for anyone that wants to talk about our last pick, Sweet Tooth. What did y'all think? Anyone planning on reading more? It's quite the cliffhanger ending, hey? 😜

Feel free to speak your thoughts and comments below!
 @TricksyTails

InLibrisVeritas I really liked it! The art was odd at first but it really fit the tone of the story. This is my second comic by this writer and he definitely knows how to put emotion on the page. I'll probably try to grab the other volumes at some point 6y
GrilledCheeseSamurai @InLibrisVeritas I'm curious...What's the other Lemire comic you've read? 6y

kylienoele I loved it! The concept was really cool. I plan on picking up the next at the library when I‘m back home! 6y
GrilledCheeseSamurai @kylienoele That's awesome! The whole series (if you enjoyed the first one) is definitely worth reading and carrying on with! 🤘 6y
InLibrisVeritas I read the first volume of his Descender series. I have been thinking about trying his Trillium series as well. 6y
DGRachel I was surprised by this and how much I liked it. I hesitate to say “enjoy” because it was such a sad, gut wrenching story. I‘m not emotionally ready for the next issue! 6y
Eyelit I read this series a couple years ago and mean to revisit (didn‘t have time this month, sadly). Overall I found it bittersweet. More downs than ups, if I remember correctly. 6y
Eyelit @InLibrisVeritas I really liked Trillium and would love to hear your thoughts if you end up reading it 6y
TK421 @InLibrisVeritas I really enjoyed his Descender series. Lemire knows how to write a good story. I liked the first volume of Sweet Tooth. The ending really has me wanting to read volume 2! 6y
InLibrisVeritas @Eyelit Certainly! I have had so many people recommend it. 6y
GrilledCheeseSamurai @InLibrisVeritas Nice. I'm a big fan of Descender. Trillium is awesome too! I strangely recommend his Black Hammer universe that he has been building up! 👍 6y
GrilledCheeseSamurai @DGRachel Lemire has a way of destroying me emotionally with pretty much all of his books and yet I always find myself coming back for more. 🤔😂 6y
GrilledCheeseSamurai @TK421 Dooooo it! I promise it just gets better and better... 🤘 6y
mcipher I forgot to get it from the library! Running to see if I can put on a hold and just read late... 😊 6y
MiyakoBunny I loved it 😍🖤🖤🖤 I have to admit the yokel accent was off putting at first, but the in your face take it or leave it dystopian fantasy mix had me 🕳🦌 6y
ReadingRover I really liked this!!! Once I got started I didn‘t want to stop and now I‘ve got the second one on hold at the library. I had no idea what to expect when I started & I ended up really liking the story line. It was a bit predictable but it still had me hooked. The art is great too!!! (edited) 6y
cobwebmoth I thought it was sad and disturbing, but I'm becoming a Lemire fangirl, so I'll keep reading. Plus, I need to know what happens next! 6y
kylienoele I definitely plan on finishing this series, even if it breaks my heart! 6y

This month's #CBBR #WeveGotIssues selection was a good one. Jeff Lemire is a great writer. I agree with @cobwebmoth that he knows how to write a compelling story. Poor Sweet Tooth is as innocent as they come. He's thrown into a post apocalyptic wilderness under the "protection" of Jepperd. Picture an older Negan leading Bambi through a militia controlled wilderness. Sad, violent, and well written. @TricksyTails @GrilledCheeseSamurai

TheLibrarian This comic series is amazing and one of my favorites 🖤- great review! 6y
GrilledCheeseSamurai Yaaaas. Glad you liked it! Gonna attempt more from the series or 1 and done? 6y
TK421 @GrilledCheeseSamurai if they add more volumes on hoopla then I'll definitely read more. Lemire writes good comics! 6y

Dark, creepy, violent, sad, and very good. I rather liked the art, and the post-apocalyptic storyline was a heartbreaker. I‘m invested enough in Gus‘s character to want to know what happens next, but not sure I‘m mentally able to handle the storyline. One to keep on the #TBR for when I feel better. Now, I need a bright, cheery palate cleanser.

I decided to give Jeff Lemire another try after not loving Essex Country, and I‘m glad I did. I kept avoiding this one, thinking that was blood on his face. However, it‘s chocolate and just goes to show I shouldn‘t assume when it comes to comics. This poor kid won over my heart and definitely made me want to follow his journey. I wasn‘t expecting the post-apocalyptic setting either. Looking forward to more.

Talk about a contrast from our last pick, Curse Words, hey?

This is early in Jeff Lemire's career and you can definitely see that in his artwork. I still love it though. I'm curious as to what you people think of his drawing style. Love it? Hate it?

This is certainly a heavy volume but the full run of trades tells a story that has stuck with me for years since I read it the first time.

InLibrisVeritas I didn't really like the art but I do think it fits the story well. It really has the same desolate feel as the world while kind of portraying some of Gus' timidness. 6y
Reggie I didn‘t really like the art at first until the characterization and the story got under way and then it makes sense. I like how it changes a little when telling different stories. 6y

I thought I‘d go ahead and start this month‘s #wevegotissues #cbbr selection since I am having trouble sleeping, but 12 pages in, it‘s so sad and creepy that I think I‘m going to have to save it for daylight. 😱😱

Reggie I read it today and I know it‘s sad when I don‘t cry but there is that pain right above your stomach but right below your heart. Ughhh his innocence. I got book 2 cause that is not how it can end for me. 6y

Another comic for #wevegotissues finished! I have read Lemire before and it seems he favors the subtle story over the brash, which is perfect. I am really interested to see where Gus goes and how he handles the ending of this. I am not fond of the art though, so this one wouldn't have been on my radar if not for thus group. So for that I am thankful, it's fantastic to branch out. 🌟🌟🌟1/2

Tore through this one last night because my hoopla borrowing was about to expire.

Very interesting, but definitely kind of a downer, even when compared to other post-apocalyptic fiction. Something about it being a child at the center of it all. Still, I'll continue reading.

A good October comic for fans of post-apocalyptic horror. It has much in common with Descender (the innocent boy hero, member of a hunted race in a world under threat of extinction) but with a grimier aesthetic and thread of backwoods religious extremism. I'm anxious to learn more about Gus and how he fits into the fate of his dying world.

Just finished this. I really liked it, good story, art style was okay for me. Overall it just felt a bit too short so I can't make up my mind about it yet. Definitely going to read the second book because some graphic novels need more volumes to show what they're worth, if that makes sense. I see potential in this one!
