I like the idea of race being assigned. So many of use are many things mixed together, myself included. And what im perceived as usually has very little relation to how I define myself. But it‘s a system that empowers other people to categorize you and impose a value based on that categorization.

A nice palate cleanser after such a heavy nonfiction book. Using my cat as a prop, lol. #catsoflitsy #StacyCatIsBestCat

Meticulously researched and wonderfully written, this book reads more like the most nail-biting of whodunnits than what I think of when I think “history book.”

Finally finished. I try to read all the “controversial” books, so my reading (ARC I got ages ago) is not an endorsement. I can‘t speak to the racial and cultural insensitivities but even as a read it was just “meh”. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ / 5

Magnificently and meticulously plotted, this novel examines human goodness and faith through a truly wonderful cast of characters. A great book. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ / 5

The New Me | Halle Butler

Not for everyone. However, it was for me.

It may also be for you if you‘ve ever:
• Hated another woman for anti-feminist bullshit
• Had to school a tourist on the correct way to ride a subway escalator
• Been told to be grateful for a dead-end job that doesn‘t pay a living wage
• Been depressed by life under late-stage Capitalism
• Thought that something you buy will finally fix you
• Been someone‘s “at least I‘m not as bad as them” friend

This book is so darkly humorous and deals with depression so well.

This one had a bit of a slow start, as it took over 100 pages for the central relationship to really get going. But oh, the ending was wonderful, and the oral history format let a lot of humor and heartbreak shine through. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #catsoflitsy #StacyCatIsBestCat

Mrs. Everything | Jennifer Weiner
post image
Pickpick

This is by far Jennifer Weiner‘s best book, a somewhat melancholy tale of two sisters trying their hardest to break free of the constraints placed on them by their sex, by their religion, by their time and by living in a patriarchal society. I grew to love both sisters, wanting to hug them at one moment and shake them at the next. And the ending—which highlights how far women have come and how far we still have to go—was absolutely lovely.

Catching up on reviews...

There‘s just something about Sally Rooney‘s writing, a tension to the prose that brings such immediacy to the words. I found myself feeling ill and anxious at various points, as twisted inside as if these moments were happening to me and not to the protagonist.

I will say that this had a bit of a slower start than Normal People, so her writing isn‘t quite as sharp yet. Still a wonderful read.

A wonderful puzzle of a book that teases you with tantalizing hints of what is to come while still surprising at every corner. This was a brilliant end to this series, becoming so much more than “just another YA” novel, at least in part because the adult characters and moral quandaries eventually become more more interesting, and much more central to the story, than the original two. Just a great read.

Incredible. How do you begin to feel like a whole person when someone has forced you to see yourself and the world around you through his eyes? How do you make your own story when someone has made himself your whole story?

This book is truly excellent and engaging so far. I know it was viewed as “controversial” upon release a couple months ago, and I read articles about it at the time. But so far it seems to be a brilliantly nuanced survivor‘s tale.
