Paine‘s passion against a monarchical government is present in this short treatise. It may be short, but it packs a punch.
250 years later, it‘s a reminder of the struggle for independence in the American colonies. I‘m glad I took the time to revisit this and ponder how much this relates to today‘s political climate.

It‘s almost midnight. Going to clear my head with a a little Langston Hughes poetry before bed.
I have finally read this important document that reasoned with colonists to break away from the tyranny of a British king. He used Scriptures and history and just plain common sense to support his claim. I don't understand why I have never been asked to read it, but I thank @Librarybelle for the push. It is very readable and it is still relevant after 250 years.
...and that the elected might never form to themselves an interest separate from the electors,...

My son sent the above link to me re: Common Sense
Vladimir & I are ready! I suspect I‘ll read parts throughout the day & let them simmer. I think it‘s remarkable that nearly 250 years after its publication Paine‘s words still resonate. For me, I‘m hoping this read helps me reflect on history & the current political dynamic.
Paine, a man with no prospects, helped ignite the colonies with this work. Anyone can be a hero.
What do you hope to learn/gain from today‘s reading?

It‘s been over 25 years since I last read this, and I feel like this is a good document to read on the 4th.
Anyone wish to join me reading this on the 4th? If so, we could post comments throughout our reading, but make it very lowkey.
🖤 My dad‘s camera, probably made around 1910 ish, looks something like this ⬆️ (my dad was in his mid 40s when I was born)
🖤🖤 People of the next century will need “common sense” 🤗
Thanks for tagging me 🥰

If you like history this is a great read. Fast and easy to understand. Common Sense is about building America and it‘s new values through the eyes of a founding father.
“A long habit of not thinking a thing wrong, gives it a superficial appearance of being right, and raises at first a formidable outcry in defense of custom. But the tumult soon subsides. Time makes more converts than reason.”

I had to read small sections of this in high school. All I remember is that is was a slog.

• Started out strong and tapered off at the halfway point; I suppose it was just the antiquated language and the unfamiliar historical laws of the time which bored me a lot. Highly intellectual read and I did enjoy the first half more than I expected. Still a so-so read, overall. Plan to read more Paine though •

A nice day for some Common Sense

My first read of 2019. I‘m giving it a pick because I think it‘s important that we are well versed in our country‘s history - and that includes the racism and sexism of the founding ideas. I don‘t believe the founders or their influencers are beyond reproach- we can appreciate what they did brilliantly, but we must also deal with what they got wrong or we‘ll never move forward.
You have to meet a book where it lives, not where you want it to be. After this was mentioned in several of the presidential biographies I‘d read, I thought I should read it. When I take off my 21st Century glasses and think like someone in the 1700‘s, I understand how this pamphlet reignited (and in some cases ignited) passion for independence from Great Britain. There was a LOT going on in this time period and it was interesting to read this.
This political piece using the appeal of religious zeal and hatred of “the other” is painful to read, though he does make a sound argument to fell the divine right of kings. Also, the morbid irony of his criticism against the so-called “slavery” the British colonists experience under the King‘s rule and William the Conqueror‘s invasion of England “against the consent of the natives...” I really want to smack him with his hypocrisy. @SerialReader
Received this copy of COMMON SENSE by Thomas Paine, originally published in 1776, from Jes Lyons over at @HarperCollins // @WilliamMorrow and I cannot get over how beautiful this cover is 😍

I also cannot get over the fact that the review on the cover is from the Schuyler sisters. Heyyyyy Hamilton reference 👋🏼

Well-written essay on the reasons the colonists need to break away from Britain. I can see why this was such a popular essay.
Interesting book mail today.
"For myself, I fully and conscientiously believe, that it is the will of the Almighty, that there should be a diversity of religious opinions among us: it affords a larger field for our Christian kindness." -- Thomas Paine, Common Sense
"The reformation was preceded by the discovery of America, as if the Almighty graciously meant to open a sanctuary to the persecuted in future years, when home should afford neither friendship or safety." From Common Sense by Thomas Paine. I wonder whether those in government have read this when they seek to deny people from other countries asylum.
I just felt like I needed to read this. It was genuinely interesting. I was worried that I might find it boring.
Because I have no self control, I've left my mystery 🕵🏻♀️ story in the living room and gone to bed with this and my poetry. If I read fiction in bed, I stay up way too late. 🤓
