Everyone Brave is Forgiven
Everyone Brave is Forgiven | Chris Cleave
From the author of the #1 New York Times bestselling Little Bee, a spellbinding novel about three unforgettable individuals thrown together by war, love, and their search for belonging in the ever-changing landscape of WWII London. Its 1939 and Mary, a young socialite, is determined to shock her blueblood political family by volunteering for the war effort. She is assigned as a teacher to children who were evacuated from London and have been rejected by the countryside because they are infirm, mentally disabled, orlike Marys favorite student, Zacharyhave colored skin. Tom, an education administrator, is distraught when his best friend, Alastair, enlists. Alastair, an art restorer, has always seemed far removed from the violent life to which he has now condemned himself. But Tom finds distraction in Mary, first as her employer and then as their relationship quickly develops in the emotionally charged times. When Mary meets Alastair, the three are drawn into a tragic love triangle andwhile war escalates and bombs begin falling around themfurther into a new world unlike any theyve ever known. A sweeping epic with the kind of unforgettable characters, cultural insights, and indelible scenes that made Little Bee so incredible, Chris Cleaves latest novel explores the disenfranchised, the bereaved, the elite, the embattled. Everyone Brave Is Forgiven is a heartbreakingly beautiful story of love, loss, and incredible courage.

This is an excellent book about those left behind in London and in Malta. The title of the book is tongue in cheek since the brave were never jus on the front line

It took a while to get into and to keep going, and the ending was a little lackluster as well. Besides that, it was still a pretty decent story. I enjoyed the characters even if there wasn't much character growth. I'd recommend if you want a light read.

I really enjoyed this WWII historical fiction novel following the lives of four friends. I wasn‘t aware of the racial issues in London during that time. I also gained some insight into the issue of class. A very good read from a different perspective (at least for me) than other books of the genre. The audiobook narration was by Luke Thompson and was excellent.

How have I never read this book before?! It is beautiful and poetic, heart-wrenching and hopeful. It‘s definitely not your “usual” WWII book. It‘s very character-driven, following four friends through the war and their experiences. This book will not leave my thoughts anytime soon. #Libby #ebook #Kindle

I seem to have never met a WWII book I didn‘t love and this was no exception. I loved this. The writing was literary and decadent. The dialogue was witty and wry. It‘s depressing as heck, don‘t get me wrong, but somehow I was ok with that here. The ending was not everything I‘d hoped it would be but it was in keeping with the story and for that reason I can‘t be mad at it.

The book starts off slow, and I had trouble getting into it. As it progressed, I really enjoyed reading about the war‘s effect on 2 completely diff characters. We see Mary, a young socialite, struggle to contribute something during the war despite her family remaining virtually unaffected. In contrast, Alistair is living the harrowing experience of a soldier in the midst of the war. I also thought the ending of their story was quite realistic.

For the most part, I enjoyed what I read this month but ‘Everyone Brave is Forgiven‘ was probably my favorite. It was a book club selection that I would not have picked up otherwise (I was feeling kind of burned out on WWII historical fiction and didn‘t think this one would add much) but surprise, surprise — I loved it!

I think I picked this up at the wrong time? It didn‘t wow me like I expected it would and didn‘t seem to add much to the genre of WWII fiction. #tbrread #wintergames #merryreaders

One thing I‘ve learned from history is that in war as in love, forgiveness is the masterpiece of emotional intelligence. Without it, how can we move forward?

Liking this audiobook very much from RBDigital, borrowed from the library. Narrator is Luke Thompson. #anglophilesoflitsy #WWII #historicalfiction #theblitz

Aimeesue So I went to one of Cleaves' readings for Little Bee at the Margaret Mitchell house years ago and he said that he picks up the accents and verbal cadences of his characters by eavesdropping on people on public transport and listening to radio programs from their home countries. 😂 5y

I just love historical fiction and especially World War II, and this book didn't disappoint. First I felt like it was a bit too fast-paced with those big leaps ahead in time, but this actually helped to show a more encompassing view on the characters' fates. This is no corny love story but rather the tale of two people struggling to love again after so much loss, with the shattered pieces of their hearts.(But boy, was it also so damn witty!)

In this one, we follow the lives of 4 friends #CarryingTheBanner in WWII London.

I usually enjoy these types of books, but I struggled to get into this one. I recall a lot of skimming by the end 😬

Cinfhen Ugh!! Me too!!! And I felt terrible when I realized this was the story of his grandparents...it was written with so little attachment or pride. I felt like even the author wasn‘t fully invested in the story. My favor book by Chris Cleave is still 5y

This story follows four friends through the first years of the war. Two spoiled rich girls who volunteer because war is exciting, and two men; one who chooses to fight and one who doesn‘t want to. Simmering under the surface is class, race and racism, education, friendships, jealousy and guilt. This book was much more than the sum of its parts, with unexpected humour and wit, and I really enjoyed it.

A novel about three people and their experiences in London during WWII. The story is engrossing and heartbreaking and at one point when I was reading it on the train during my commute to work I literally gasped out loud and yelled, “Nooo!!” I think my favorite thing is the way the author has drawn the characters – they really came to life for me. Which makes sense since the author based the characters on his own grandparents.

A little holiday book haul, all for £. I was very good and restricted myself only to books on my wish list. I‘m feeling very happy about the tagged book as it‘s been on my list for a while and I found a virtually new copy in our campsite‘s little library (don‘t worry I left one behind in exchange!)

Mdargusch I‘m trying to use that same restriction. If it‘s not on my TBR then I can‘t buy it. 🙅🏼‍♀️ 6y

I‘ve read all of his other books and savoured each one because of his beautiful writing. There is a tenderness to the way he develops his characters with his moving prose, they are deep and complex, much like the setting. The only negative was the pace which moved between slow & steady. This was probably deliberate to let the story unfold, to immerse the reader in WWII, and to develop the characters. Stay with it, you‘ll be glad you did.

Post 2 of 3: My mom was truly the one to foster my love of reading. We always had great book at home. One of my fondest childhood memories is of her reading me Anne of Green Gables. We both still love it. We did a weekend in PEI in 2015 and saw the play again after 30 years. When she saw my #bookhaul she called dibs on these 8. They'll go to school after mom has read them. Maybe she'll agree to come to my classroom to book talk a couple of them.
