A backpacking trip has deadly consequences in this chilling new novel from the bestselling author of The Lost Night and The Herd. Emily is having the time of her lifeshes in the mountains of Chile with her best friend, Kristen, on their annual reunion trip, and the women are feeling closer than ever. But on the last night of the trip, Emily enters their hotel suite to find blood and broken glass on the floor. Kristen says the cute backpacker she brought back to their room attacked her, and she had no choice but to kill him in self-defense. Even more shocking: The scene is horrifyingly similar to last years trip, when another backpacker wound up dead. Emily cant believe its happened againcan lightning really strike twice? Back home in Wisconsin, Emily struggles to bury her trauma, diving headfirst into a new relationship and throwing herself into work. But when Kristen shows up for a surprise visit, Emily is forced to confront their violent past. The more Kristen tries to keep Emily close, the more Emily questions her motives. As Emily feels the walls closing in on their cover-ups, she must reckon with the truth about her closest friend. Can Emily outrun the secrets she shares with Kristen, or will they destroy her relationship, her freedomeven her life?

July 26, 2023 Wow I was shocked at the ending!!! I thought one thing but something else happened. I thought that Kristen was going to stay alive and Aaron would get killed by Aaron but instead Aaron kills Kristen with his car bc he knew that Emily didn't want Kristen around based on her weird behavior. Truthfully, I did not want Kristen around either based on how she was acting towards Emily. Glad that Emily and Aaron are alive. 5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

July 24, 2023 Ladies and gentleman, boys and girls, children from all over the world, may I announce that I am on page 252 out of 300 (yes 300 exactly) and I am very conflicted about what kind of person Kristen is. Is she nice? Maybe. Jealous? Super jealous. Manipulative? Maybe. Confident? Yes. A killer? I don't know 100% yet...

July 18, 2023 Already began reading this book and have reached page 120. The main characters that are talked about are Kristen and Emily. Aaron is Emily's bf and she is trying to figure out of he is the one. Kristen is a good friend of hers BUT asks her to help AGAIN. From then on, she begins having flashbacks and horrific reminders of when they buried Paolo in Chile. The first time was in Cambodia.

Toxic female friendship. It was just OK. I didn't care for either of the women, and the ending was a bit ambiguous (or maybe just confusing). Kind of surprised it's a Reese pick.

emmaturi I had to DNF as like you both females weren't very nice and just didn't care. 10mo

TW: sexual abuse/assault, child abuse, grief

This story gripped me right from the start! Initially, I believed I knew the direction that the story was going in. I was definitely off-base. Bartz explores friendship and the meaning of “toxic”.

Started this book in Marrakech, switched to audio and then finished in print today. A bit preposterous but held my interest and drew me in. A story about a toxic friendship and the lengths one will go through for the other. Best friends travel to #Chile where they find themselves tossed into a life altering situation….again! #NoFoMo Not a must read but an ok midweek distraction 🤓 #ReadingTheAmericas23

Did you know, the are over 7,000 unsolved murdered every YEAR!? Meaning there are likely around 7,000 new murderers a year walking among us thinking they got away with it... terrifying, right?! I was getting serious Roommate or Single White Female vibes from this one. Without revealing too much, this book asks us, “can you really trust anyone to help you get rid of a dead body?“

Quick read that was a bit too neat and tidy. There were a few twists but nothing too shocking or that wasn't slightly predictable.

Overall though for a thriller it was good. The suspense starts early and keeps delivering throughout.

If you're looking for a quick read that isn't too gory or descriptive this one works. Just don't expect it to deliver anything new for a thriller.

I really don't even know how to feel about this book. This was my follow-up choice right after reading Verity, maybe that was the mistake. Verity was so crazy, unpredictable, and twisted that I was expecting that again. We Were Never Here was a little too predictable for me and the story line drug a bit for me. The characters were incredibly unlikable and a little annoying.

It wasn't awful, just not what I wanted/needed.

This is right on the line between the pick and so-so for me. It definitely pulls you in quickly, but I wish there were more answers by the end. This psychological thriller is about two best friends on vacation. It reminded me a lot of Who Is Maud Dixon? In both books there is travel, two women, and unreliable narrator, and a slow burn plot.

This was better than I even expected it to be. Some parts were a bit slow but I really liked how this was a thriller focused on a female friendship. The writing was really believable in the dialogue and the thought processes of the main character. I felt like the ending was a bit abrupt and rushed, but it kept my interest and I liked the way the author had it all come together at the last moment.

This was an entertaining listen, with all the twists and turns. Weak women frustrate me though, and I found myself irritated, more often then not. If you‘re looking for a strong female protagonist — this isn‘t for you. There‘s also a repetitive quirk where the lead character exclaims “Stop. Stop. Stop!” You get tired of hearing it every chapter or so (or at least I did.) This is a good book, but stops short of being a great one.

There was so much potential here but the opportunities to explore darkness and set up interesting unreliable narrator twists was ignored in favor of tropes and needless repetition (“Stop! Stop! Stop!”). It gets a so so just because I flew through it wanting to know the end, hoping I‘d be surprised. I wasn‘t.

LitLaur Yes! 👏🏻👏🏻 I thought I was the only one super-annoyed by the “Stop. Stop. Stop!” Ugh. 2y

The 1st and last 50 pages of the book are well written and very engaging. Atmospheric and wild. However, the pacing in the middle was pretty rough. I felt for a thriller that this moved very slowly.I couldn‘t wait to get to the end of it because I wanted to know how it ended but it took Emily so long to discover the truth about Kristen. But perhaps what Emily discovered isn‘t even the truth. With this book and it‘s unreliable narrator.. who knows?

I had no idea what to expect from this book. I picked it from the library solely because it was on a recommended book list. I‘m so glad I did! This book is a mystery/thriller that keeps you guessing until the last page. The main character finds herself involved in a series of crimes, a boundary-less best friend and a hard time finding fact from fiction. Great read!
