Ace of Spades
Ace of Spades | Faridah Abike-Iyimide
Gossip Girl meets Get Out in Ace of Spades, a YA contemporary thriller by debut author Faridah bk-ymd about two students, Devon & Chiamaka, and their struggles against an anonymous bully. When two Niveus Private Academy students, Devon Richards and Chiamaka Adebayo, are selected to be part of the elite school's senior class prefects, it looks like their year is off to an amazing start. After all, not only does it look great on college applications, but it officially puts each of them in the running for valedictorian, too. Shortly after the announcement is made, though, someone who goes by Aces begins using anonymous text messages to reveal secrets about the two of them that turn their lives upside down and threaten every aspect of their carefully planned futures. As Aces shows no sign of stopping, what seemed like a sick prank quickly turns into a dangerous game, with all the cards stacked against them. Can Devon and Chiamaka stop Aces before things become incredibly deadly? With heart-pounding suspense and relevant social commentary comes a high-octane thriller from debut author Faridah bk-ymd.

I really liked this book and finished it very quickly. I liked the theme of fighting injustice and thought that the characters were very well-written. I thought it was very exciting and the book had me sitting at the edge of my seat and wondering who the anonymous Aces is. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I knew I wouldn‘t get any books for Christmas (bro &SIL didn‘t exchange and told parent not to buy me anything, told Man Cub I wanted a carpet cleaner) so I bought myself a couple.
Top 2 are new and the bottom 3 are used.
Seen and heard good things about Ace.
Love Amanda Lovelace.
Love Louise Erdrich (want her new one).
I‘ve heard good things about the last 2 as well.

I don't really enjoy thrillers because they stress me out like this one did! That asside, it's an interesting book that uses cultish terrorism & white supremacy to build a terrifying, disturbing situation that‘ll have you on the edge of your seat. I did wish more had been done with their prefect status, which didn‘t seem to matter in any way. Strong content warnings for car accident, racism, gaslighting, nonconsensual nudity, fire death, & other.

This read a lot like Gossip Girl or Pretty Little Liars through the lens of systemic racism. This was definitely a #BlameItOnLitsy read for me, but I actually liked it a lot more than I expected to from just the title and cover art. I ended up finding this really difficult to put down, and read it in a single day.

So I definitely ordered my own copy of this book because I knew, at about 90 pages in, that I loved it so much and needed to own it! Now I'm almost halfway through it and even more obsessed! IT'S SO SO SO GOOD! It's like Pretty Little Liars/Gossip Girl mixed with the film Get Out but set at a rich preppy school. SO GOOD! 💕📚 #catsoflitsy #littenkitten #rumpel

Devon and Chiamaka are being attacked by unknown enemy, Aces. They‘re leaking all their secrets to everyone in their school. Devon and Chiamaka have to find out who they are & stop them before they ruin their futures.
I wasn‘t prepared for the plot of this book. It definitely took a turn toward the end. I liked it. I feel that the POV switches were important to the plot. I feel there are a couple unanswered questions though that I wanted answered.

I just finished my last #LMPBC book for this round. Why was I expecting fantasy? I think the cover put that in my mind. It‘s not at all fantasy, it‘s more a YA thriller set in a private high school academy.

Venkman helped by hiding my silver markup pen as much as possible. 😹

Although I found some plot points obvious, overall it had me turning pages quickly and my heart racing.

I enjoyed this book for my lmpbc! This book was fast-paced, thrilling, and mind-blowing. The writing provided a mixture of stunning craft, character development, and an engaging plot that constructs emotions of fear, confusion, anger, and drama within the reader and demonstrating in action racial oppression, homophobia, social eugenics. #lmpbc #Round12 @WanderingBookaneer @bibliobard @Soubhiville

⭐⭐⭐⭐
Compelling, though at times tough to read. I don't enjoy watching characters get beaten down over and over, so I struggled a bit. And I wouldn't call it enjoyable, but the story was a good one, and by the end I was really invested in Devon's and Chiamaka's outcome.

Rightfully and accurately described as Get Out meets Gossip Girl. While I felt like the beginning was slow on the set up, it quickly became something that was hard to put down. Told dual POV from two black high school students at a PWI.

#2021Book76
I knew nothing about this book before I started reading it, and I am so glad for that. At first, it seemed like a regular book about rich prep school kids and the difficulties of being the one poor kid thrown into the mix. But then things took a very dark turn. Another review I saw described this as "Gossip Girl meets Get Out," and I think that's probably the best way to pitch the story without giving too much away.

CollapsingLibrary I keep seeing this but haven‘t been enticed enough to pick it up. That description though is swaying me to check my library for a copy! 4mo

Ace of Spades is definitely different than anything I have read. I can't really talk about this book without giving it away but it had me speechless and at the same time feeling bad for the characters and what they were going through. I felt like this book was all to real but with a little spin to it with the whole Get Out Vibes. It also did remind me of Gossip Girl and trying to figure out who is ACE...

Finished this audio on Wednesday but didn't get a chance to post til now. Loved this book. But it also will make you very mad at what these two students, the only two black students at this prestigious academy, start going through their senior year. Especially when you find out the "who" that's behind it all. I did have a couple questions once we got to the end but this was a very good read, and I loved the audio.

It feels like the author tailor wrote this to fit both the “dark academia“ & “book that has a heart, diamond, club, or spade on the cover“ #PopSugar Reading Challenge prompts! Devon and Chiamaka usually don't have to think too much about being the only Black students at a ritzy private school, until a campaign of targeted harassment towards them starts. The cover blurbs compared this to the movie Get Out, and I found it equally unsettling.

So much to say about this. Think “Get Out” meets “Riverdale”. This novel is soaked in YA funk. I could tell the author was writing from that sunken place that is the particular province of teenagers. Akibe-Iyimide gets it so right where it counts, like exploring the undeserved shame of not being popular. I expect Abike-Iyimide to write great things in the future. But today she has a hit on her hands.

Fantastic!!

I was itching for a good YA mystery and Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé served me one. Frankly speaking, when I first started this book, my exact thoughts were: “ah, not another highschool drama with mean girls“. But as I kept reading, I realized it was much much more than that. Ace of Spades turned out to be such a powerful and enlightening book. Dealing with topics of racism, peer pressure and com petition, this book is unputdownable.

WOW!! Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé‘s debut novel may be seriously the best debut I have ever had the pleasure to read. The narrative itself is deliciously twisted and suspenseful; it is a page-turner that I simply could not put down. The characters are well developed and relatable, and since the events are presented through the eyes of both Devon and Chiamaka the reader is given a complete picture of both of their lives and the events of the novel.

I really enjoyed this book. It is always refreshing to see characters that look like you as the main characters. The Gossip Girl/ Get Out vibe is what really did it for me. This book touches on systematic racism and how it factors into someone‘s entire life. This book also was kind of personal for me as well since I know what it‘s like to be the one of the black students in a classroom and all the things that come with that.

Whew, y‘all, that was D A R K. The plot was fantastic — really fast-paced, pretty surprising & occasionally twisty. It had me second-guessing my theories, even if some of the turned out to be true. The relationships were interesting, if not always hella swoony, & added depth to the main story. Chiamaka & Devon were FANTASTIC. Raw, relatable, with compelling, dynamic background & depth. They really drove this story home. ★★★★☆.

Ace of Spades by Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé is like a blend of Pretty Little Liars and Dear White People, which are two of my absolute favorite TV shows. The author admits as much in the afterword of this book, stating that she loved watching Gossip Girl and Pretty Little Liars, but wished that there were more black people.
