The Meaning of Mariah Carey
The Meaning of Mariah Carey | Mariah Carey
34 posts | 31 read | 14 to read
It took me a lifetime to have the courage and the clarity to write my memoir. I want to tell the story of the moments - the ups and downs, the triumphs and traumas, the debacles and the dreams, that contributed to the person I am today. Though there have been countless stories about me throughout my career and very public personal life, its been impossible to communicate the complexities and depths of my experience in any single magazine article or a ten-minute television interview. And even then, my words were filtered through someone elses lens, largely satisfying someone elses assignment to define me. This book is composed of my memories, my mishaps, my struggles, my survival and my songs. Unfiltered. I went deep into my childhood and gave the scared little girl inside of me a big voice. I let the abandoned and ambitious adolescent have her say, and the betrayed and triumphant woman I became tell her side. Writing this memoir was incredibly hard, humbling and healing. My sincere hope is that you are moved to a new understanding, not only about me, but also about the resilience of the human spirit. Love, Mariah

Mariah dishes and sings 🎶Girl does not hold back!!
I‘m no super fan, but I really appreciated learning about Mariah‘s struggles and hardships. She may be a diva, but she‘s put in the hard work and that voice is truly Gd sent. Audio narration is A MUST!! I don‘t think I would have gotten through this book in print.

britt_brooke I enjoyed this much more than I expected to! 2y

Enjoyed this insight into Mariah‘s life and childhood. It really helps reframe the way her narrative played out around the time Glitter was released.

March 27, 2021 Listers!! Heads up! I learned so much about Mariah Carey from reading her autobiography. She writes about the dark lonely moments as a kid and how her family affected her, THEN suddenly turns the book 180 degrees almost 2/3 of the way in the end by talking about how she was able to come out from the darkness and continue making music and being supported by her family -- especially Moroccan and Monroe -- her kids 🤧😩😪

Mariah‘s music is very catchy, but I‘m not a super fan. Still, I‘m glad I picked this #audiobook up at an audible sale. I can see why her very scarce, insecure childhood caused her to go over the top in everything as an adult. I always thought, especially after reading her tour riders, that she was a crazy diva (and she is), but she‘s also a dedicated songwriter, survivor, and overprotective mother. We‘re all more than meets the 👁.

Cinfhen Awesome review 😍I think I‘ll look for this next time there‘s a deal 🤩 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen I‘m surprised you didn‘t pick it up since you‘re my music-loving friend! The most similar in style and story is Alicia Keys‘ memoir, but I did like Alicia‘s better, though. 3y

Loved it. I became a big Mariah Carey fan after first hearing Vision of Love when I was 12 or 13. While I knew some elements of her upbringing and was vaguely aware of how toxic her relationship with Tommy Mottola was, I had NO idea how many factors there were conspiring against her. I wish her peace.

TrishB Lovely review ♥️ 3y

Reading this on the heels of watching the NYT documentary Framing Britney is giving my hatred for the press coverage of female entertainers renewed passion. 🤬

PatriciaU This topic was a Twitter thread over the weekend. It included an absolutely horrific “interview“ of Lindsay Lohan by David Letterman. I'd never seen that interview and never really been a Letterman fan, but now, F*ck that guy. I'm sure Mariah and Britney and so many other young women have similar stories to tell. 3y
MicheleinPhilly @PatriciaU The Britney Spears documentary (available on Hulu) had so many clips from really gross interviews she endured over the years. It was simultaneously sad and rage-inducing. 3y
TrishB I‘d say it‘s just coverage of females, no matter what. Just worse if you‘re famous. How some of these women ever get out of bed is beyond me, their resilience is amazing. 3y

MicheleinPhilly @TrishB I‘m trying really hard not to cry. I can‘t even imagine. And her family is just a mess. It‘s awful. 3y
TrishB It stinks big time the ongoing treatment of women. The Britney documentary airs here tomorrow 😢 3y
MicheleinPhilly @TrishB It is a very tough watch. 3y
eanderson I cannot find the Britney Spears documentary. When I search it in Hulu nothing comes up. 🙁 Maybe I‘m searching wrong! 3y
MicheleinPhilly @eanderson Search for “New York Times Presents” or “NYT Presents” 3y
eanderson Ahhh!!! Found it. Thank you! 3y
Hooked_on_books This one made me think so much more about how young women in entertainment are portrayed and abused by the media. It‘s good but anger-inducing. 3y

This is THE book for true Mariah Carey fans. I‘ve loved her for many years but even more now. She explained the meaning behind her songs which she composed the music for, wrote the lyrics and perfectly sang. She is mostly definitely a prodigy. But also she shared a heartfelt story of her life. Most anyone can relate to some aspect to her journey. I surely could

Thank you for the tag, @EadieB 🤗💜

This almost feels like cheating, but I‘m currently reading the tagged book and all of Ms. Carey‘s hits are running rampant! 🎶🎵🎶🎵 She‘s got me feeling #Emotions for her remarkable journey!

I love socks, mugs, t-shirts!

No preference on characters. I think I may tend to prefer slightly older characters...🤷🏻‍♀️

Loved this so much!

Mariah Carey was the first album I ever owned and I have loved her for almost three decades at this point.

While I certainly knew a great deal about her, this book opened me up to so many stories that I was completely unaware of.

HIGHLY recommended for fans both old and new!

Blaire Did you listen to the audiobook? She sings on it in most chapters and is an emotional narrator. 3y
KristenDuck No not yet! I love her so much I probably will do that next though! 3y

Thank you Helen for the journal (I LOVE it ♥️) and the postcard & bookmark (these quotes are actually spot on.) Hope you‘re having a lovely Christmas 😘

And my little book haul. I asked my other half for the bottom two, the Mariah I‘ve read on audio but wanted the hardback too for the pictures 😂 and I‘m sure I will read it again. The Paris book was a gift from my Mam which I‘d never heard of but sounds right up my street ✨

I‘m a huge Mariah fan but this is better than I was expecting. It‘s amazing. The parts about her childhood & her father were really eye opening & touching; her story is true rags to riches. You get insight into how some of her songs were written, her first marriage & the control she was under, the Glitter period & her ‘emancipation‘. She knows how to tell a story & it‘s so riveting. A joy to listen to and I probably will do so again. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I was hesitant at first. I‘ve never been a fan and only liked one or two songs (that I don‘t even like enough to own) but when I tell you this book was FABULOUS! She pulled no punches on the difficult situation with her family, her struggle to make it and the reality of her industry marriage/relationships. I couldn‘t put it down! She was so honest, relatable and down to earth that I have a new respect/liking for her.
⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ 1/2 out of 5

HOTPock3tt Couldn‘t believe how brutally honest she was about her sister scalding her with that hot tea and causing 3rd degree burns on her back! 😱 3y

HOTPock3tt @JenlovesJT47 It surprised me too! It WAS really good! And I really didn‘t expect such upfront honesty. It was actually very memorable for me ♥️ 3y
JenlovesJT47 Some of my favorite songs are from the Butterfly album. I‘m also a huge baseball fan. Imagine my surprise and delight in learning most of the songs are about Derek Jeter! lol 😆 3y
HOTPock3tt @JenlovesJT47 I was shocked! I have to go back and listen to some of those songs! 😵 I knew she had a thing with Derek jeter but I thought it was just a short fling. Didn‘t know it inspired some of the songs!! 3y

Mariah spills all the tea! 🐸☕️ I‘ve been a big fan since I was a kid, and I loved reading this and learning the meaning behind some of my favorite songs, especially the ones about Derek Jeter. I also admire and respect her so much more after learning about her crummy childhood and awful family. Her relationship with Tommy Mottola will make your blood boil! She worked her ass off to get where she is. She‘ll always be my favorite! 5⭐️

I‘m not the biggest fan, although I like some of MC‘s songs. But I do ❤️ a memoir. Raised in a very unstable environment and then marriage (divorce) to a controlling man, her amazing success was a result of her talent, strong work ethic, and true love of writing and music. The book did seem to be less detailed at the end (after the birth of her children), and even though the book was just released, I feel like we need an update. 3/5🦋s

I chose this book as a light read alongside the heavy Crosshairs by Catherine Hernandez. Not part of the Lambily by a long stretch but still curious. MC had a much shittier childhood than I knew. Her work ethic and wit really come through. I would‘ve liked more self reflection and a bit more dishing (How was the power imbalance in her first marriage different from that of her current relationship? What did Prince say to her?!?).

Gorgeous morning listening to Harry Styles and reading about Mariah.

zezeki I discovered his music in late 2019, and particulary in 2020 and I'm loving it. Both his music and videos. 3y
BookishTrish @zezeki I‘m pretty new to him as well. His newest album was a pretty great summer soundtrack. Now that it‘s fall, I‘m back to his first. 3y
zezeki @BookishTrish I haven't listened to his first album, I know a couple of songs though. The Sign of the Times is one of the most depressing songs, at least to me it is, it's a great one, but I never want to listen to it again, cause it makes me just sad everytime I hear it. 3y

I didn‘t expect to enjoy this as much as I am! Mariah narrates this memoir so well, and it‘s written wonderfully.

I may not be the big fan I was when she broke out in 1990 (eleven year old me thought “Vision of Love” was EVERYTHING), but her story is undeniably fascinating.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Honestly, when I first heard about this book, I‘d thought it‘d be a hot ass mess, but it‘s a well-written, solid celebrity memoir. I knew nothing of Mariah‘s childhood. Like many artists, she‘s been through, and risen above, a lot. She comes across genuine and vulnerable; playful and self-deprecating. At times, unreachable, yet also relatable. She expertly narrates and sings well-placed a cappella snippets. My god, her voice is stunning.
