Anne of the Island (Special Collector's) | Lucy Maud Montgomery, L M Montgomery
"How horrible it is that people have to grow up!" Wishing couldn't keep Anne of Green Gables from growing up. Anne's whole world was changing. “This wood really is haunted now—by old memories...It seems to me that the little girls Diana and I used to be play here still...with the ghosts. Do you know, I can never go up this path in the dusk without feeling a bit of the old fright and #shiver? There was one especially horrifying phantom which we created...and...to this day, I cannot help fancying its little, furtive footsteps behind me when I come here after nightfall.” #QuotsyOct19

“I think an old, deserted house is such a sad sight...It always seems to me to be thinking about its past and mourning for its old-time joys. Marilla says that a large family was raised in that old house long ago, and that it was a real pretty place, with a lovely garden and roses climbing all over it. It was full of little children and laughter and songs; and now it is empty, and nothing ever wanders through it but the wind.” #rose #QuotsyJune19

Marilla was thinking of her whole past life, her cramped but not unhappy childhood, the jealously hidden dreams and the blighted hopes of her girlhood, the long, gray, narrow, monotonous years of dull middle life that followed. And the coming of Anne—the vivid, imaginative, impetuous child with her heart of love, and her world of fancy, bringing with her color and warmth and radiance, until the wilderness of existence had blossomed like the #rose.

StayCurious You could use this for #blossom as well 👌 6mo
TK-421 @StayCurious Thank you for pointing that out! 😀 That‘s what I meant to do since I already posted a quote for rose 😳 Wait, no, I forgot to post the rose quote, didn‘t I? It‘s been a loooong week & my brain isn‘t braining very well (edited) 6mo

“I'll be so lonesome when you go," moaned Diana for the hundredth time. "And to think you go next week!"

"But we're together still," said Anne cheerily. "We mustn't let next week rob us of this week's joy. I hate the thought of going myself—home and I are such good friends. Talk of being lonesome! It's I who should groan. YOU'LL be here with any number of your old friends—AND Fred! While I shall be alone among strangers, not knowing a soul!”

Susannah Anne of the Island is the next in the Anne series for me. I seem to be reading about one per year, which means I‘ll be done in 2022? 2024 if I include Rainbow Valley and Rilla of Ingleside. Wow. 😬 11mo

Anne sat on the floor in a little circle of light cast by the lamp beside her, amid a surrounding snow of crumpled manuscript.

"What in the world are you doing?"

"Just looking over some old Story Club yarns. I wanted something to cheer AND inebriate. I'd studied until the world seemed azure. So I came up here and dug these out of my trunk. They are so drenched in tears and #tragedy that they are excruciatingly funny." #QuotsySept18

And oh, how dear and beloved everything was—that little white porch room, sacred to the dreams of girlhood, the old Snow #Queen at the window, the brook in the hollow, the Dryad's Bubble, the Haunted Woods, and Lover's Lane—all the thousand and one dear spots where memories of the old years bided. Could she ever be really happy anywhere else?” #QuotsyMay18

Much better than Anne of Avonlea, not as good as Anne of Green Gables. Things I liked a lot: Phil. A fun character. A good balance to Anne. The college experience. Ruby Gillis. (sob) And Anne getting to know a bit about her parents. Continued in comments.

Krisjericho Things I could have done without: How many times was Anne proposed to? I lost count. Bleh. Things that made me want to burn this book in the fiery pits of hell: Anne turning down Gil‘s first proposal. Oh, and ANNE TRYING TO MURDER A CAT. Yeah, I said it. Things that redeemed this book with all its flaws: Gilbert Blythe, my book boyfriend. And that last paragraph. THAT is how you write a satisfying romance. All writers, and romancers, take note. 2y

I‘m supposed to be reading Shakespeare. Instead, I am letting L.M. Montgomery GUT ME AND LEAVE ME A SOBBING HEAP ON THE FLOOR.

Ruby Gillis. Anne‘s parents. Anne being a frustratingly dense child-woman.

And Gil. My beloved Gilbert Blythe is still the best book boyfriend ever. I adore him.

“I meant that the ability to write for the Press was a great responsibility," said Aunt Jamesina severely, "and I hope Anne realizes, it. My daughter used to write stories before she went to the foreign field, but now she has turned her attention to higher things. She used to say her motto was 'Never write a line you would be ashamed to read at your own funeral.' You'd better take that for yours, Anne, if you are going to embark in #literature.”

"Why, Anne, you don't seem a bit pleased!" she exclaimed. Anne instantly manufactured a smile and put it on. "Of course I couldn't be anything but pleased over your unselfish wish to give me pleasure," she said slowly. "But you know—I'm so amazed—I can't realize it—and I don't understand. There wasn't a word in my story about—about—" Anne choked a little over the word—"baking powder.” "Oh, I put that in," said Diana, reassured.” #Letter

Finished my first book for #24in48 finally! I love Anne so much. I was hoping to make it to twelve hours today, but it's close to 2 a.m. and I'm at 11 1/2 hours and tired. So, getting ready to sleep now, a little later but not as far along as I'd planned. Maybe I can power nap and start fresh before long!

If I had to choose my top 5 favorite books, Anne would be on it. I'm currently rereading the series just because they make me so happy, and we can all use a little more happy. Growing up, I wanted red hair and freckles so badly! Gilbert was my first crush and Anne was my kindred spirit.

One of my favorites of the series, I really love this book. All the Characters have grown so much. I think there was a little more comedy in this one than Anne of Avonlea. I love Philippa's Character, even though I didn't at first. She is really relatable to me. So many marriages in this book. Diana has Married and had her First Child. Life seems to happen so fast and it just shows in this book.
