What Jane Austen Ate and Charles Dickens Knew
What Jane Austen Ate and Charles Dickens Knew: From Fox Hunting to Whist-the Facts of Daily Life in Nineteenth-Century England | Daniel Pool
21 posts | 24 read | 39 to read
A delightful readers companion (The New York Times) to the great nineteenth-century British novels of Austen, Dickens, Trollope, the Bronts, and more, this lively guide clarifies the sometimes bizarre maze of rules and customs that governed life in Victorian England. For anyone who has ever wondered whether a duke outranked an earl, when to yell Tally Ho! at a fox hunt, or how one landed in debtors prison, this book serves as an indispensable historical and literary resource. Author Daniel Pool provides countless intriguing details (did you know that the plums in Christmas plum pudding were actually raisins?) on the Church of England, sex, Parliament, dinner parties, country house visiting, and a host of other aspects of nineteenth-century English lifeboth upstairs and downstairs. An illuminating glossary gives at a glance the meaning and significance of terms ranging from ague to wainscoting, the specifics of the currency system, and a lively host of other details and curiosities of the day.

I won't say that I've been in a reading slump, but I will say that narrative hasn't been holding my attention very easily, lately. Perfect opportunity for working through some non-fiction.

Ruthiella This book has been on my TBR for forever! 10mo
quietjenn @Ruthiella it's a good one for dipping in and out of. 10mo

#Bookhaul from @Soubhiville ‘s Little Free Library. Thanks Soubhi! And I managed to dig up three books to donate so at least my home library won‘t be much more overcrowded than it already is, haha! 😅 #booknerdproblems

Soubhiville Oh good! Henrietta Lacks is so good! I learned so much from it. It was wonderful to see you in person again. Enjoy! 3y
alysonimagines @Soubhiville I really enjoyed visiting with you in person too! It was also nice to meet your husband, and I loved meeting all your fur babies! 😻 And I was happy to discover a copy of Henrietta Lacks in your LFL. Been curious about her story for a while. Thanks again for having me over! I had a great time. 😊 3y

And here is the unveiling! What a great selection; thank you so much! And the little extras are so thoughtful. I feel like I should have sent you more. But I would love to do a buddy read...maybe in October? 🤔 Let me ponder for a week or so and get back with you on that. Thank you again! I love it all!

And thanks for hosting @JoeStalksBeck !

readinginthedark @BookishTrish I'm excited about that one! I haven't read any of the Hogarth Shakespeare series yet. Probably pick this one up after we read the original for #ShakespeareReadalong 6y
Q84 I'm thrilled you like it! And the package you sent me was great! No need to worry about that. I do hope that you enjoy reading each of these. And just let me know if you decide you'd like to and October would be great! 6y
Q84 I stole the gift tag idea from another swap I did. I decided to use them for bookmarks for the books they were on. Just a thought. 6y

Love me some #bookmap.

quote
Phlamboyant

Thus, in between the foot and the mile came the furlong, equal to 660 feet. (It was the old measure of a standard plowed field's length, i.e. one "furrow long".)

*I'm not going to remember most of this, but this book has tons of fascinating tidbits and I imagine is a great reference when delving into Victorian literature.*

I had fun today searching around the house for the Jane goodies in my collection. (Meanwhile Chris and Bell fell asleep; they couldn't stand the excitement.)

I also have the tagged book, which didn't make it into either photo. (Pic 1 of 2)

Great reference! Very helpful for quickly getting the gist of an aspect of daily life in England in the 1800s. Many subjects - such as country life, the Church, marriage, and titles - are covered. It was interesting to learn the soup-to-nuts hierarchy of society, along with how each member of the peerage/aristocracy/gentry would be addressed. How very confusing to be a party hostess and attempt to get it all right!

"pianoforte - The #piano. Many young ladies were taught to play it, music being thought to be a suitable feminine accomplishment, although it was not considered gentlemanly for a man to know how to play."

Interesting, I had never heard that before. ?

"May I Have This Dance"

From the country dance to the formal balls, dancing was a key way for society to interact. The early dances were groups of couples. Then, the "fast" set in town popularized the waltz, which was much more intimate. The gentleman put his arm around the lady's waist! Gasp!

The introduction of the waltz to the country figured heavily in The Nonesuch by Georgette Heyer.

We recently got a new car and when the hubby opened the glove compartment today, the following conversation happened: Hubby - Ahem, WHY do we have books in here? Me - For reading? Hubby - Yes, but why? How do you read when you drive? Me - Well, duh, they are not for driving but in case I need to wait somewhere and don't already have a book with me. Hubby - That's crazy. Me - Pfff! Whatever! 😂😂😂

JSW That sounds normal to me. I have books stashed everywhere AND always have one in my purse. 😂✅ 7y
