The Holdout
The Holdout: A Novel | Graham Moore
From the Academy Award-winning screenwriter of The Imitation Game and bestselling author of The Last Days of Night: a jury on a murder trial is deadlocked when a young woman manages to turn the tide to acquit; now, a decade later, she must face the consequences when a fellow juror is killed and she is the prime suspect. It's the most sensational case of the decade. Fifteen-year-old Jessica Silver, heiress to a billion-dollar real estate fortune, vanishes on her way home from school. Her teacher Bobby Nock is the prime suspect after illicit text messages are discovered between them--and Jessica's blood is found in his car. The subsequent trial taps straight into America's most pressing preoccupations: race, class, sex, law enforcement, and the lurid sins of the rich and famous. It's an open and shut case for the prosecution, and a quick conviction seems all but guaranteed. Until Maya Seale, a young woman on the jury, convinced of Nock's innocence, persuades the rest of the jurors to return the verdict of not guilty, a controversial decision that will change all of their lives forever. Flash forward ten years. A true-crime docuseries reassembles the jurors, with particular focus on Maya, now a defense attorney herself. When one of the jurors is found dead in Maya's hotel room, all evidence points to her as the killer. Now, she must prove her own innocence--by getting to the bottom of a case that is far from closed. As the present-day murder investigation weaves together with the story of what really happened during their deliberation, told by each of the jurors in turn, the secrets they have all been keeping threaten to come out--with drastic consequences for all involved.

The Holdout come out today! I absolutely love this book. It was mystery but not trashy at all, and I did not see the ending coming at all.

LiteraryinLititz Yay! I‘m picking up my preordered book after work! 4d

Mehso-so

The book is a page-turner, but the elephant in the room is the alleged statutory rape at the center of the mystery. The author treats the purported liaison between a 15yo & her teacher as a scandalous affair & not molestation. Characters minimize this, including female jurors w/teenage daughters. A decent mystery solidly told, but that kept me from suspending my disbelief for the rest of it.

I received an ARC from NetGalley for an honest review.

cathipink Oh yikes. Thanks for sharing that info. Think I'll strike this off my list. 5d
TheAromaofBooks I can't remember what book I read last year where it was a similar situation - the characters didn't exactly say “no big deal“ but that was definitely the vibe instead of a very clear “any relationship between an adult and a minor is a big NO especially if the adult is in a position of authority over said minor.“ I mean sheesh. 5d
REPollock @cathipink it really was jarring, like every so often a character would think about their alleged relationship (which, granted, one angle was that they didn't actually have a relationship), and the fact that not one of the female jurors got outraged about the suggestion that this man had slept with his underage student was just a turnoff. 5d
REPollock @TheAromaofBooks It just sleeves me right out. Like, really dude authors, cut this out; if the adult is having ANY physical contact with the child that is a crime in and of itself. And, gross. 5d

Wowza!!! Thanks, #NetGalley for the chance to read this #BOTM pick! I absolutely loved this!! I can‘t remember the last time a book‘s plot so completely surprised me!! Characters, pacing, rich setting- this thriller has it all- and with such cinematic flair! I can‘t wait to get a physical copy now to share! Definitely one of the #BestBooksOf2020 for sure!!

Why has the author ignored the fact that if the victim was a minor having a relationship with the adult suspect, that‘s a charge of statutory rape that would be added to the case? Instead it‘s a clandestine affair? Bitch please.

I loved this! So glad I added it to my #BOTM box. This is a juicy legal thriller, a modern-day #AgathaChristie. Didn‘t realize #GrahamMoore was the screenwriter for #TheImitationGame. I can‘t wait to read his other books. This one kept me guessing ‘til the end, although I had an inkling of the truth in the first 50 pages. Still, I was entertained cover to cover. Highly recommend. I love a clever #murdermystery that has you questioning your morals.

Now that's what I'm talking about! It's been a while since I was so thoroughly engrossed and entertained by a #BOTM pick - or any book for that matter - I loved this juicy courtroom drama! Don't want to say too much because I think this is a dish best served blind, just know that I ate it up and wished for seconds 😆

MicheleinPhilly I waffled on adding this to my box. I‘m keeping my eyes peeled for an eventual Kindle Daily Deal. 2w

⭐⭐⭐⭐?
My favorite book of the year so far!
This whodunit flashes between a 2019 murder and the 2009 "case of the century" where our victim and suspects first met.
This definitely reads like a movie, and I was hooked from literally the first page!
Thanks #botm, probably wouldn't have found this one otherwise!

A good twisty turny page flipper. I wound up guessing a few of the twists, but missed a big one. A good back and forth narrative where we learn the backstory of each jury member while the big mystery is moving forward. There were some dry parts and a big leap at one point, but just go with it. It was meant to be pure fun and a good who done it. I won‘t say I loved it, but it did the job.

You know it‘s going to be a good book when the first page talks about a legal case about a severed head.
But in all seriousness, this book was a blast to read, and was written in a way that pulled me in and didn‘t let me go. A fun read for anyone who is a fan of legal proceedings and true crime, and enough twists to make you need to go to a chiropractor afterwards 😂

An extremely clever procedural, that I did not want to put this down. Ten years ago the trial of the century took place, and ten years later the jurors of that trial meet for a television reunion.
