Coffin Road
Coffin Road | Peter May
THE TOP 5 SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER, AS FEATURED ON SIMON MAYO'S BBC RADIO 2 BOOK CLUB. The million-selling author of the Lewis trilogy brings murder back to the Outer Hebrides. A man is washed up on a deserted beach on the Hebridean Isle of Harris, barely alive and borderline hypothermic. He has no idea who he is or how he got there. The only clue to his identity is a map tracing a track called the Coffin Road. He does not know where it will lead him, but filled with dread, fear and uncertainty he knows he must follow it. A detective crosses rough Atlantic seas to a remote rock twenty miles west of the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. With a sense of foreboding he steps ashore where three lighthouse keepers disappeared more than a century before - a mystery that remains unsolved. But now there is a new mystery - a man found bludgeoned to death on that same rock, and DS George Gunn must find out who did it and why. A teenage girl lies in her Edinburgh bedroom, desperate to discover the truth about her father's death. Two years after the discovery of the pioneering scientist's suicide note, Karen Fleming still cannot accept that he would wilfully abandon her. And the more she discovers about the nature of his research, the more she suspects that others were behind his disappearance. Coffin Road follows three perilous journeys towards one shocking truth - and the realisation that ignorance can kill us.

After wading through The Priory, I was ready for something completely opposite and dived into this thriller by Peter May. I've read several of May's books in the past and enjoyed every one of them, and this was no exception. The story opens with a man staggering onto the beach from the sea, wounded and borderline-hypothermic. He has no idea who he is or where he comes from, and as he begins to piece together this own story, he starts to realize⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) that he may have been living a lie... The story is pacey and engaging, and while I couldn't say that I was shocked by any of the twists, I still felt compelled to keep turning the pages.

If this picture looks familiar, it because my #weeklyforecast is basically the same as last week! 😂 I did finish Priory late last night, but I'm leaving it so I can have the pleasure of checking it off for Saturday's #bookreport !! The tagged book is up next because I need something to break up the fantasy, then I need to read In Other Lands for #LMPBC and Pride for the #MGbuddyread . I'm actually going to pick up some hours doing odd work at ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) at the orchard this week, plus I'm working for my grandparents for a day helping at their house, and my sister and I spending a day on our side gig reading water meters for the small village where I live... so this is actually going to be a busy week!! Snow on the ground right now, but it's supposed to be 60* tomorrow and warm up through the week. Spring may finally be arriving!!

I‘m headed back into my #NewYearWhoDis list with COFFIN ROAD, which is off to a great start! Peter May really mines the amnesiac tension throughout the opening chapters. I can‘t wait to see where things go from here.

I got my #NewYearWhoDis list last night, and I‘m SO READY to go all in on @Laughterhp ‘s picks! I‘ve already read one (BLACK SUN by Rebecca Roanhorse), but the others are all new to me AND available at my library. I had a lot of fun this morning requesting the ones with holds lists (and suspending those holds so I don‘t get the books until January). Now I‘ve just gotta resist immediately nabbing the ones that‘re checked in…

monalyisha I love a reader who knows how to utilize their local library so effectively. 😍 I hope you enjoy! Ambitious list! 😅 💯 2y
monalyisha Oh, and I‘m so thrilled you haven‘t yet read Addie LaRue! I *loved* that one (it was on my list, too — & a LOT of #NYWD lists this year)! 2y
xicanti @monalyisha Addie LaRue‘s the one book I might not get in time; I‘m 209th on the list. They do have some Express copies, though, so I‘m hoping I luck into one of those in January! 2y

xicanti @Laughterhp I‘m especially excited for the mysteries on your list. I‘ve spent the last couple years really focusing on my TBR, and I blew through all the unread mysteries I owned ages ago. It‘ll be fun to get back into the genre! 2y

Ignore the background mess, we are doing a lot of house repairs.

I was so into this book, I could not put it down. I was a little nervous to pick it up since I didn‘t like the Enzo files but loved the Lewis trilogy.

Neal wakes up washed ashore and can‘t remember who or where he is. You also get Karen‘s perspective who‘s dad died 2 years ago. You don‘t know what‘s going on but it‘s so good! This mystery unfolded masterfully.

#BookReport late in the day

Finished 4 books this week. 3 audiobooks, I guess I was on an audio roll. Most were just okay.

#CurrentlyReading - the tagged book. It‘s due back at the library this week, so I had to put The Historian on the back burner.

And I‘ve only read 1 chapter of ADOW so idk if I can count that as in progress 🤣

#WeeklyForecast - Finish Coffin Road, continue with the real time read, pick up the Historian and my #LMPBC read

Cinfhen I‘m with you!! Audiobooks are so freakin convenient!!! I‘m like 3 audios to every one print book 💗 3y

Day 3 - #Coffin #CoffinRoad #PeterMay #Scarathlon #ChillingPhotoChallenge #TeamSlaughter - 1 point

Peter May is one of my favorite authors. He is an excellent writer and brings The Hebrides to life for all his readers. In your mind's eye you can see and feel what it's like to live on one of these islands as you read his books. His characters are very realistic and their lifestyle plays a very important part in the intricacy of his plots.

One of the best parts of Peter May's books is the way he describes the landscape. All the ones I have read take place on the outer isles of Scotland - which sound both harsh and breathtaking at the same time. I loved this book. The whole time i read I felt like the twist was on the tip of my tongue but I just couldn't completely figure it out- which is exactly how I like my mystery/thrillers. Definitely check out Peter May ASAP! 5⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Ok I really like Peter May. This book is the fourth in the Lewis trilogy. A man awakes on a beach with no memories of his past, a teenager whose father has died starts to investigate his life, detective Gunn investigates a body found on a remote island. Each story seemingly unconnected coalesce to a single narrative. Again this is not a story focused on the mystery, but on the characters of the involved individuals.

CaitlinR I love Peter May as well. Have you read the China series? 6y

Amnesia is the Swiss Cheese of plot devices and is very hard to write without raising eyebrows and questions from readers. However this author was able to win me over with his striking descriptions of the Scottish landscape which filled the whole book with atmosphere and mood, and I enjoyed my time spent with this book.

My first finish of the #24in48 readathon was Coffin Island! Another excellent and atmospheric Peter May mystery set on the Outer Hebrides... fascinating plot told from two perspectives that left me guessing up until the last few pages who I could really trust. Having the plot centre around neonics and the controversy about bee colony collapse was an interesting current affairs angle.

This book has 3 of my bookish pet peeves: gratuitous sex scenes (2 in the first 50 pages 😑) protagonist describing appearance by looking in the mirror (and he's naked at the time 😖), and plot-convenient amnesia (if you can't remember your name, how do you know how to use a computer and drive? 🤔). I've liked most books by this author, just not this one! #marchintoreading

hollytucker Ha, yep peeves too. Or the famous plot explainers though dialogue: "well, Jimmy, as you know..." 7y
rabbitprincess @hollytucker Yes, that one too! But as far as peeves go, I can be more forgiving of the As You Know, Bob than some other ones. Depends on the book and my mood 😜 7y

So today was a bit expensive book-wise. The first meeting of the Graphic Novel Group in which we pitch our choices for the next year, caused me to buy a few that didn't make the cut. The rest were just random finds and my monthly comic issues! 🤓

BookBabe What's that "Paper Girls" one? I've been looking for one with cool art about cool girls, interesting and not about superheroes but just badass. 7y
StellaDz @BookBabe it's a graphic novel by Brian K Vaughan. I've heard great things about it! The synopsis is: In the early hours after Halloween of 1988, 4 12-year old newspaper delivery girls uncover the most important story of all time. Suburban drama and supernatural mysteries collide in this smash-hit about nostalgia, first jobs and the last days of childhood. 7y
StellaDz @BookBabe the art is pretty stellar with the same colour scheme as the cover. And the girls look pretty bad-ass with just a quick flip through 😎 7y
