The Slippery Slope
The Slippery Slope | Lemony Snicket
There is nothing to be found in the pages of A Series of Unfortunate Events but misery and despair. You still have time to choose another international best-seller to read. But if you must know what unpleasantries befall the charming and clever Baudelaire children read on . . . Like handshakes, house pets or raw carrots, many things are preferable when not slippery. Unfortunately the Baudelaires run into more than their fair share of slipperiness during their harrowing journey up and down a range of strange and distressing mountains in The Slippery Slope. In order to spare you repulsion it is best not to mention any more regarding a secret message, a toboggan, a deceitful trap, a swarm of snow gnats and a scheming villain. With 5 million copies sold in the UK alone, one might consider Lemony Snickets A Series of Unfortunate Events to make him one of the most successful childrens authors of the past decade. We, however, consider these miserable so-called adventure stories and the Hollywood film starring Jim Carrey that accompanied the books for children as nothing more than a dreadful mistake.

After the cliffhanger ending of book 9, Violet and Klause must make their way up the mountains to recover Sunny from Count Olaf and his crew of villains. Along the way, they meet a mysterious stranger and try to uncover more secrets about VFD. Truly this book is where Sunny comes into her own and proves she is not a baby anymore 💖

Finally continuing with my re-read of the series ahead of watching each Netflix episode. And sadly, Daniel Handler continues to be a trash human.

Book 1/6 for #AwesomeApril

Amandajoy My stepdaughter just started reading these and she is loving them. 3y
Andrea313 Ugh, I know. Utter garbage. I haven't re-read these in a few years; do you find your feelings toward him color the work at all? 3y
janeycanuck @Andrea313 I think because they are rereads, I‘m able to keep it separate. It‘s not quite the same as the Rowling situation - there isn‘t the same community for these books and he did apologize for the events, though I don‘t believe they were genuine. So my feelings about the works are affected but I don‘t feel possessive of it as I do with Harry Potter, if that makes sense. I haven‘t read anything new by him since 2014, though. 3y

Andrea313 @janeycanuck It makes perfect sense to me! You're describing my feelings exactly. Although I've always really loved the Series of Unfortunate Events, my emotional connection wasn't as deep as it has been with other books. Letting go of HP, though- that one hurts. I usually re-read that full series every year, and now find I just have no desire to. I hope maybe I'll want to someday but if not, 🤷‍♀️. 3y
janeycanuck @Amandajoy the writing is so smart and funny! 3y
Andrew65 Well done. 👏👏👏 I need to read these. 3y

I was disappointed with the slow and boring start, but this ended up being one of the best in the series. I love that we learn more about VFD, but also end up with even more questions.

This was a pretty dull entry in this overly long series. I am determined to finish reading the things before I finish watching the show (which is a great and not-at-all-dull adaptation). So I shall slog through. Book 9 was pretty good, but that might be because I have a liking of creepy carnivals. Hopefully book 11 will be...not dull?

(Quarantine book #26. Checked off "read a book beginning with S" on my reading challenge.)

Poor Sunny was separated from her siblings in the end of the last book in this installment, and The Slippery Slope picks up right where they left off! Will Violet and Klaus be able to escape their own unfortunate events and also reunite with Sunny?

I‘m still enjoying this series as I find so much hope in how resilient this trio truly is!

How many more bad things could possibly happen to them?

Finished reading this to my daughter; tomorrow we watch the Netflix show. This one even I‘m looking forward to seeing. I love the we get Sunny‘s point of view.

#bfcr2 I got in so many steps while reading this! #fitwizards I exceeded my step goal, checked off one book, came up short on sleep. Tomorrow is another day.

I was so mad when I first read this and the survivor turned out to be Quigley Quagmire. Like, there‘s no reason it would have been one of the parents with so many fires to choose from. But still, So Mad.

Due to it being a children's book the language is a little basic for me but the dark element of fires, kidnapping and murder are both shocking for its genre and appealing to me.

Attention german speaking Littens! I‘ve decided to complete my Series of Unfortunate Events. I have books 1-9 and want to buy the last ones. Apparently that‘s not as easy as I thought, I can only find them for absurd prices(50-200€ per book...) so in case one of you stumbles across one at a flea market please buy it for me- I will pay you back for sure! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

Adding a book to my #readathon day. My husband and I just finished the next season of the Netflix Series of Unfortunate Events, and they left off at the same exact cliffhanger that I left off on when I read the series like 15 years ago and never finished. Slippery Slope hadn‘t been published yet, and I was in college, so life gets in the way! My anxiousness has been renewed, so THE TIME HAS COME. #deweys24hourreadathon
