In the Moon of Red Ponies
In the Moon of Red Ponies: A Novel | James Lee Burke
28 posts | 12 read | 8 to read
"James Lee Burke tells a story in a style all his own, in language that's alive, electric. He's a master at setting mood, laying in atmosphere, all with quirky dialogue that's a delight." -- Elmore Leonard In James Lee Burke's last novel featuring Billy Bob Holland, Bitterroot, the former Texas Ranger left his home state to help a friend threatened by the most dangerous sociopath Billy Bob had ever faced. After vanquishing a truly iniquitous collection of violent individuals, Billy moved his family to west Montana and hung out a shingle for his law practice. But in In the Moon of Red Ponies, he discovers that jail cells have revolving doors and that the government he had sworn to serve may have become his enemy. His first client in Missoula is Johnny American Horse, a young activist for land preservation and the rights of Native Americans. Johnny is charged with the murder of two mysterious men -- who seem to have recently tried to kill Johnny themselves, or at least scare him off his political causes. As Billy Bob investigates, he discovers a web of intrigue surrounding the case and its players: Johnny's girlfriend, Amber Finley, as reckless as she is defiant -- and the daughter of one of Montana's U.S. senators; Darrel McComb, a Missoula police detective who is obsessed with Amber; and Seth Masterson, an enigmatic government agent whose presence in town makes Billy Bob wonder why Washington has become so concerned with an obscure murder case on the fringes of the Bitterroot Mountains. As complications mount and the dead bodies multiply, Billy Bob is drawn closer to the truth behind Johnny American Horse's arrest -- and discovers a greater danger to himself and to his whole family. How Billy Bob strikes back at evil and protects his kin is the masterful triumph of In the Moon of Red Ponies. Beautifully written, with an intriguing plot and characters whose conflicts seem as real as life itself, this novel shows James Lee Burke again in the top form that has made him a critical favorite and a national bestseller.

“Somewhere in the distance, beyond the vastness of the landscape below him, was a place called the Sand Hills, where the dead went to live with the buffalo and the grandfathers who watched over the four corners of the universe ... In that moment Johnny American Horse knew he would never be alone. (p. 225)

Lordy, James Lee sure can write!

Overall, I really enjoyed this book although the ending disappointed me - I like the big reveals you get with Christie's & Doyle's stories.

I've been extremely lucky with #whodunituk & enjoyed most of them- thanks @ScorpioBookDreams for organising!

Dream-like, tense, evocative. This book will make you want to visit Montana. Big sky, mountains, sunsets, herds of elk wandering down the mountain... beautiful.

The plot is complex and ambitious. Except for some unfortunate portrayals of female characters I found it to be excellent. 🤦🏼‍♀️

Thanks so much for choosing this book for #whodunituk , @thegirlwiththebookishcandle ! It will be making it‘s way to you soon, @jhod

James Lee - what gives?

You keep mentioning peaches. 🍑

Peach cans (both empty and full)

Peach ice cream (does that exist?)

Who does that?

🍑😂🍑😂🍑😂🍑😂🍑😂🍑😂🍑

night_shift Peach ice cream does exist and it's glorious! Perhaps the peach is an innuendo? 😂 6y
Kappadeemom I live in Georgia (the peach state) and we have the BEST peach and blueberry ice cream ❤️❤️ 6y
cathysaid What @Kappadeemom said! Delicious, especially when it's homemade. 🍑 6y
trueisa4letterword Peach ice cream is my favorite! 6y
Libby1 @UnidragonFrag , @Kappadeemom , @cathysaid , @trueisa4letterword - excellent! 🍑 Who knew? Sadly, I don‘t think any innuendos were involved here. 😂 6y

So today I just read and watched athletics on the telly 😀
Finished my first #whodunnituk.
A good read - not a book I would even have picked up - never heard of the author and it has cowboys! So it wouldn't really have got on my radar. I really enjoyed it, plenty of action and twists.
@thegirlwiththebookishcandle @ScorpioBookDreams

Leftcoastzen Burke is best known for his New Orleans Dave Robicheaux novels , won Edgar award for 3rd in series "Black Cherry Blues".Hardboiled for sure .1st one is "The Neon Rain" 7y
AnnieReads My favorite James Lee Burke novel is Tin Roof Blowdown. 7y
KathyWheeler Because I love Burke's Dave Robicheaux novels set in south Louisiana, I cannot bring myself to read these, which is totally unfair to Burke and probably to me too. 7y

TrishB @Leftcoastzen @AnnieReads @KathyWheeler I can't believe I'd never heard of such a prolific and popular author! Well - that's Litsy for you 😀 7y
KathyWheeler @TrishB He's great. I first picked up one of his books because it had such a great title, In the Electric Mist With the Confederate Dead, and it was set in Louisiana where I was living at the time. 7y
TrishB @KathyWheeler he's definitely on my future tbr! 7y
thegirlwiththebookishcandle Oh I'm so glad you liked it Trish. He's one of my must-read authors. I know I'm not supposed to but I really liked Wyatt Dixon in this book 😳 7y
TrishB @thegirlwiththebookishcandle I think we can all live a baddie occasionally 😀 I will definitely look for the author again! 7y
thegirlwiththebookishcandle Lol yes indeed. Try the Robicheaux series but that is quite long now, or more of the Holland family books as theres less of them 7y
