Last Train to Istanbul
Last Train to Istanbul | Ayse Kulin
International bestseller by one of Turkey s most beloved authors As the daughter of one of Turkey s last Ottoman pashas, Selva could win the heart of any man in Ankara. Yet the spirited young beauty only has eyes for Rafael Alfandari, the handsome Jewish son of an esteemed court physician. In defiance of their families, they marry, fleeing to Paris to build a new life. But when the Nazis invade France, the exiled lovers will learn that nothing not war, not politics, not even religion can break the bonds of family. For after they learn that Selva is but one of their fellow citizens trapped in France, a handful of brave Turkish diplomats hatch a plan to spirit the Alfandaris and hundreds of innocents, many of whom are Jewish, to safety. Together, they must traverse a war-torn continent, crossing enemy lines and risking everything in a desperate bid for freedom. From Ankara to Paris, Cairo, and Berlin, "Last Train to Istanbul" is an uplifting tale of love and adventure from Turkey s beloved bestselling novelist Ay e Kulin."

This should have been better. Translates (slightly stiltedly I felt) from Turkish this is the story of a handful@of brave Turkish diplomats and their efforts to move Jewish Turks out of occupied France, going as far as issuing passports to non Turkish Jews additionally. What the booked missed was a really strong protagonist and a parallel sorry about the sister of one of the travellers added little #bookedintime #pantone2023 a soft pick

My love for WWII books started with Anne Frank. Since then I bet I‘ve read hundreds. Now I look for those that focus on the uncommonly told stories like this one about Jews in Turkey and how the government of Turkey helped Jews escape from Nazi-occupied France. Kulin centers the story on two Muslim Turkish sisters and their families. Audio narration is awful.

BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cinfhen Yes, I feel like I learned a lot even though it was really just an average book (narration notwithstanding). 3y
Librarybelle I too like stories that you don‘t often see in the history books. Even with fiction books, it helps round out knowledge of that time period. 3y

BarbaraTheBibliophage @Librarybelle Yes! The fictional characters make the history come alive. Is that too cliche? 3y

Last month's #Trymysnacks box was from #Turkey. So I chose Last Train to Istanbul as my book to go along with the theme. I learned that Turkey took in Jews during the Holocaust. It's an excellent historical fiction novel for anyone interested in World War II fiction. My favorite snack was the Bissli Remix.

Finished this one this morning. At first I was afraid it would be documentary-like about strategies in WW2, but as it progressed, I got more and more involved with the characters. It made me aware of how dire the situation was for Jews all over Europe during the war. It was very enlightening. Also, it is #11 on my #BookSpinBingo and that means I have a B-I-N-G-O!!!

The translation makes the writing really good. I assume and hope that it was true to the original. The story centers around a family from Turkey focusing on the daughters/sisters during the 1940s. One marries a Turkish diplomat and the other a Jewish man and leaves to live in Paris. When Paris is occupied the couple must flee. The Turkish gov though demands that the Nazis allow anyone you Turkish passports to be allowed to leave and go to Turkey.

I didn‘t want to get out of bed today. It was 71 with 95% humidity at 8 am this morning. There was no way I was going to a walk in that mess. It would be like walking and breathing in chowder. I will do some yoga today though. I stayed in bed and had Alexa read to me and browsed Pinterest.

I‘m enjoying this book. I picked it up when Amazon had their World Book giveaway, the audio was only a few dollars and the ebook was free. It‘s not history heavy or emotionally heavy, at least not yet. It is a good walking book for me. The story is interesting but then I read a lot of books that revolve around Jews during WWII.

The last part of the story, the train ride, really had me captivated. What I liked about the book was the setting; Turkey and France; the time period, World War II; and religion, Muslim and Judaism. But I also thought it was a romanticized view of the Holocaust. The author's note at the end did reveal she did a fair amount of research for the book. Overall glad to have read the book.

I liked the way this book's name- The last train to Istanbul- was written among red bordered flowers. Turning the book over, I couldn't help taking the book, after reading the twisted opening plot.
A wonderful book with a high tension filled plot, clever placings of stories, and an easy language. Though sometimes I felt irritated at the lack of intense words in showing heavy emotions. But still the clear language is an asset most of the time.

Doughtah Ayy, I‘m hoping to finish this before new years day ♥️ i also like the clear language, but it hasnt sucked me in yet. Im only 20% in. When did it really draw u in? 5y
Rohiniranu @Doughtah To be specific, the opening plot itself drew me in. I also have interest on nazi-period related topics, so that fuelled it. But anyways, I hope u like the book. Have a good read and time! 5y
Doughtah Ahh, gotcha. ☺️ Thanks! 5y

Historical Fiction on the Holocaust is fascinating. I enjoyed Sarah's Key and Those Who Save Us. Ill be reading All The Light We Cannot See next. The Turkish perspective of Last Train is something I was not aware of and I'm grateful to gain insight. At times this book is choppy and disjointed. Still a page turner and thought provoking. I also appreciate the fact that the Muslim people have a chance to be the good guys.

It took me awhile to get invested in this story. Whether the author or the translator is responsible I‘m not sure, but there was more « telling » and less « showing » which made it seem less real. But after the half-way mark it either improved or I didn‘t care anymore and the story took over. It‘s a perspective on WWII that I had no knowledge of, and an important story about doing the right thing in difficult times. #readaroundtheworld

What an interesting slice of history that I knew nothing about. A solid work of historical fiction, that did a good job of telling this true story through the lives of one family, especially focusing on the women of said family. There were a handful of side narratives, that didn't really contribute much to the overall story, but it's still a pick for me.

Amazon World Book Day 3/9

Definitely my favorite of the lot so far. When I first started the book I was expecting more about an exciting train ride through German occupied Europe. What it actually is is more of a drama akin to Tolstoy. The lives of people in Turkey and France intermingle in the wake of Hitler‘s control of France. It‘s a very fascinating perspective of WWII that I had yet to experience and highly recommend!
