Started reading this book and it is oddly drawing me in and I‘m enjoying it. It‘s a bit different. Anyone read it?

#SpringSkies Day 19: #Fall in title. My handwritten book log for our #DecolonizeBookshelves2022 reading theme. There were striking themes that fit into the decolonize nature of our reading theme, especially the portrayal of biracial characters who do not seem to fit in anywhere, forever outsiders across their two cultural backgrounds. Litsy doesn‘t have “Cut & Thirst” listed, so I added it under “Cutthroat”. 🤷🏼♀️ This was a very short, but very interesting read!
A 9 year old named Violet came into the bookstore to celebrate her birthday and, when she saw my dragon t-shirt, recommended me this middle grades graphic novel about a young Chinese-American girl who‘s gifted a dragon egg! While I didn‘t love the representation of scientists or the emphasis on blood, I was blown away by the action, plot twists, stunning art, and lovable characters—Nate the dragon enthusiastically included!
I couldn‘t put this one down once I‘d started. The themes in it and of course the story are both relevant and kept me hooked!
I love Maggie O‘Farrell‘s writing and this one is the most unusual one I‘ve read. Fascinating and unusual plot. Worth a read for sure.
That was one cute, wonderful book! I don‘t know where this Maurene Goo reading rush came from, but I don‘t regret a second of it.

“The dog it was that died.” I had to Google the line as I‘d never read Goldsmith‘s satiric elegy. OUCH!
Very fitting summation of the novel. Both Kitty and her husband Walter are difficult characters to like and empathize with, but are most definitely human in being their own worst enemies.
The reference to Chinese staff as “boy(s)” was grating each time I heard it, but is apropos to the era.
I LOVED this book!! It was such a great snapshot in time. Set in Hong Kong between 1949 and 1950. The writing was superb…one warning…it was probably me but it took me so long to get through. That being said, I enjoyed it. It gives a really balanced look at how “New” China came into power and how the Missionaries had to leave for Formosa (Taiwan) and HK. Looked at the issues of colonialism. Plus, an affair which was not embraced…he was married.
