Sabriel | Garth Nix
The first thrilling installment of Garth Nix's bestselling OLD KINGDOM seriesSabriel has spent most of her young life far away from the magical realm of the Old Kingdom, and the Dead that roam it. So when a creature from across the Wall arrives at her all-girls boarding school, she surprises herself with her ability to deal with it. The creature carries a message from her father, the Abhorsen - the magical protector of the realm whose task it is to bind and send back to Death those that won't stay Dead. Since the demise of the Royal Family the Dead have become stronger and more fearless, and now it seems their forces are threatening to overwhelm the Old Kingdom. Sabriel's father has been trapped in Death by a dangerous Free Magic creature. He urges her to return to her homeland, and to discover who or what is behind this uprising. Armed with her father's binding-bells and sword, she soon finds companions in Mogget, an ancient spirit bound into the body of a cat, and Touchstone, a young Charter Mage whom Sabriel frees from a long, magical imprisonment. As the three travel deep into the Old Kingdom, threats mount on all sides. And every step brings them closer to a battle that will pit them against the true forces of life and death - and bring Sabriel face-to-face with her own destiny. The ebook edition is packed with bonus content like a "How I Write" essay and, for devices that support audio, 12 clips of an exclusive interview with Garth.

Managed to get the whole old kingdom series on kindle a while ago when they were 99p each. I‘ve not had much time for reading recently but have enjoyed working through a chapter or two a night of this. It‘s just such amazing world building.

KCofKaysville I enjoyed it several years ago, but I never went on to the rest of the series. I like a good heroine. @Mrs_B 3mo

Aren‘t those covers BEAUTIFUL? 😍😍😍 I confess I bought Sabriel because of the cover. It was kind of an instalove kind of crush. 😂🤣 Now that I finally completed the series, I‘m ready to read Sabriel. The downfall is after the third book, he changed the covers. 😭 Don‘t you hate when that happens?

Excuse me but WHY are there two versions of the 25th anniversary edition? It‘s bad enough that Victoria is back in lockdown (although the Mambo #5 tiktoks have been quite entertaining)- I can‘t also be expected to make difficult decisions like this!

TrishB Sorry you‘re in lockdown again 😞 you could‘ve in a country with 50k plus cases a day and about to reopen everything. The worlds gone bonkers. 6mo
ozma.of.oz If I remember correctly, the one on the left is exclusively an Australian edition. I think. And I‘m so sorry about the lockdown. My work just lifted the mask mandate and I‘m just about tearing my hair out in frustration. 6mo
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @TrishB, the speed of this lockdown caught me by surprise. The mask mandate for offices that are not public facing had just lifted a day or two before lockdown was announced. That‘s so many cases! Are they declining at all? 6mo
See All 6 Comments
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @ozma.of.oz, the one on the left did pop up as an option on an Australian online bookseller newsletter but my screenshot is from book depository which is not (so I think available for anyone to purchase worldwide). Ive just bought more face masks - at this stage I feel like I‘ll wear them (regardless of the mandate) until the vaccine rollout rolls around to my age group. I feel for you - the frustration is real! 6mo
ozma.of.oz Huh. Weird about the book. I have no idea then. 😅 And yeah, I‘m also just going to continue wearing my mask. The number of people that I‘ve heard flatly refusing to get the vaccine at my work is just so disheartening. 6mo
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @ozma.of.oz, it‘s so disheartening. There are a few people at work now that are not doing the right thing and I‘m ready to start losing friends over it. Im still no closer to deciding which version I want 🤣 I‘ve got awhile to think on it… 6mo

I‘m not a huge fantasy book reader. I enjoy Tolkien & Martin, but have found very little else in the genre to hold my attention. Until Garth Nix. I took a chance on this one since the audiobook is narrated by none other than Tim Curry. It‘s really unlike much else that I have dabbled with in the fantasy genre. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ out of 5.

I‘d heard a lot of good things about this. They were all true. A strong & capable main character, with just enough self-doubt & inexperience to make her believable & thoroughly likable. The magic system—using bells—was fascinating & I also enjoyed the intrigue of the Old Kingdom‘s history. ALSO, it was refreshing how this mid-90s YA fantasy didn‘t put romance or a love triangle center stage. A wonderful start to a series I‘m excited to continue.

KCofKaysville I liked Sabriel a few years ago but that's as far as I read. @BarbaraJean 8mo

I absolutely love this series. Listened this time round to the audiobook and whilst I enjoyed I think I prefer to experience print rather than audio.

I love this unique world and magic system that Nix has created, where magic exists beyond the wall and the dead return to life. The only way to return the dead back is with a set of bells that often have a mind of the their own.

Awk_Word_Smith I‘m really enjoying Tim Curry‘s narration. 8mo

CruelSister This is one of my fave series! I was so entranced by this book when I was in HS that I tracked down Garth Nix‘s email address from his website (this was way back in ‘98 or ‘99) and I wrote him a gushing email about how much his writing inspired me to try to write my own stories. I‘m still trying to get the writing thing down all these years later, but his response was kind and personable. Anyway, excellent series. I love Mogget. 9mo

I give this book a solid 3 stars. It‘s very slow going, or maybe it was the audiobook that made it feel like that. The ending was fantastic and made me feel like getting there was worth the boring start. It also made me want to continue the series!! Definitely give this a go, just maybe not the audiobook.

Oh my god, I feel so unobservant.

For years, I have read and loved the Old Kingdom series by Garth Nix.

And I studied Shakespeare in college. A lot.

And how old was I when I realized that the Abhorsen is named after the executioner in Measure for Measure?

Today. I was today years old.

Leniverse Thank you! I didn't know that either. (I haven't read Measure by Measure). I wonder if any of the other names in the series are from Shakespeare. Touchstone? 12mo
ozma.of.oz @Leniverse I actually know that one! Touchstone is the fool from As You Like It! 12mo

Clare-Dragonfly Measure for Measure is one of my favorites. Garth Nix has great taste. 🥰 I‘m pretty sure I noticed the connection, but I‘d read Sabriel two or three times before I ever read Measure for Measure. 12mo

My friend recommended this book to me after I bugged him about the fact that I just can't seem to “get into“ Fantasy. He knows I'm more of a horror fan, and seeing as Sabriel's job is to banish the dead, this book seemed like a good way to ease me into the genre. Nix's writing also has a YA feel to it, so it was easy to get through. Overall I found myself falling for the characters, and I'm curious to see what this series has in store 4/5 😻

Ok so this might be the 3rd time I‘ve used this for a prompt but It‘s So Damned Good. My favourite YA fantasy ever - next to no romance, frightening magic, the most sarcastic cat in any book ever & a huge library with forgotten rooms!

I just finished this gem! Sabriel is a fun, scary, and action-packed historical fantasy which is aimed at younger readers but I enjoyed it none-the-less. Sabriel is a great protagonist. She's a necromancer with dark and deadly abilities, but she's also tough and sensible and does the right thing even when it's harder than giving up. The middle sagged a little, but the last few chapters were absolutely gripping.
