I started this one last December and never finished it so I decided to try again this year. I don‘t know why but it was just hard for me to connect with the story. Richard Armitage is one of my favorite narrators so I really don‘t know why. I may need to try this one in another format because I feel like I just couldn‘t get into it this time. #WinterReadathon Also this was my December #BookSpin

MatchlessMarie @Andrew65 There are some similar parallels/themes as A Christmas Carol but more on the creepy/ghoulish side. I think the story is worth trying again. I heard there is an illustrated version I might try that one next time. 1y

Listened to two of dickens‘ Christmas books including the #merryreaders team read. I do see why a Christmas Carol is more famous but I unexpectedly loved the chimes as well. Uplifting in the end but harrowing on the way there. Nobody writes about poverty like dickens.

The Chimes is a more difficult read than a Christmas Carol for modern readers, especially before Dickens gets to Toby Veck‘s story. Even then, it‘s a tough read because he and his daughter have a hard hard life and they are treated most cruelly by those who purport to treat the poor well. Still, fine Dickens and a good life lesson. #wintergames #tmskellington @crimson613 @clwojick @staycurious

Another Dickens‘ novel, another #winteryread. I like this story about Toby Veck and his daughter but it is very sad how they are treated by the well-to-do. The first part of the book is confusing and hard to read, but once you get into Veck‘s story it is hard to put down, hoping for the best for Veck and his daughter. Recommended. #holidayread

I decided to read more Dickens. I listened to this one on Audible by Richard Armitage a few years back. But there‘s something about the written word to catch Dickens‘ humor. Here is a description of the main character with enough detail one can immediately picture him. 🎧 I‘m not really sure what happened during key or pivotal moments in this short story. Published a year after ‘A Christmas Carol,‘ it seems to have some common aspects: A review of the MC‘s life with a preternatural guide, social commentary, and melodrama. But everything was less clear... Some of it may have been due to Richard Armitage‘s narration but I think I just need to sit down and read this Christmas horror story next time.

Crazeedi I live in snow country so unless we get feet of snow its business as usual. My sister in law lives in north Carolina so I'm sure she's snowed in 5y

Savedbygrace @Crazeedi we only get snow about two or three times the entire winter and it's only a few inches that lasts maybe 4 or 5 days if we're lucky...than it's just slush for the next couple of weeks 😆. Thankfully we are only a couple of hours to the mountains of Boone if we want some real snow. ;) 5y

First, the dishonorable:

My annual Dickens Award goes to the most tedious, contrived, meaningless book I read all year, & this time, it goes to the man himself 😉. I listened to The Chimes for some Christmas spirit. But not even Richard Armitage's narration could turn this into a worthwhile endeavor. I said it before & I'll say it one last time: I hate Dickens 😊

respekt1111 I confess I've only read two Dickens novels. While I found A Christmas Carol to be charming (especially when read to me by Patrick Stewart), The Mystery of Edwin Drood was a slog😕 7y

Sweettartlaura @Reviewsbylola I find that A Christmas Carol is the lone exception in his catalog. If you didn't like something like A Tale of Two Cities, you probably won't like the rest of his stuff. He's a love him or hate him kinda guy😉. But if your goal is to read more classics, there are lots of other choices😊 7y

Apparently, I'm going to have to read this in print next year. I've listened to it from start to finish three or four times in the last two weeks, but I keep zoning out and have no idea what the story is about. I love Richard Armitage's voice, but something about the combination of his voice and the Dickensian prose has a soporific effect on my mind.

A delightful story about a poor man meeting the "rich" who had very strong opinions about how he could better himself (all sounding very familiar today) and how he can find his own sense of happiness. Reminiscent of a Christmas Carol but apparently written first. Armitage's narration? Easily 5 ?. For sure here's another movie I will never watch the same anymore after hearing this performance, The Hobbit. What a talented actor.

So, I love A Christmas Carol so much, but my mind really wandered during this one. I missed a lot of details because of that, so I probably am not doing it justice, but this one didn't grab me. Also, is it kind of really similar to A Christmas Carol?? I will say that Richard Armitage did an excellent job with the #audiobook narration!

Riveted_Reader_Melissa First... I never knew that A Christmas Carol was the first in a series of Christmas stories that he wrote, so I was already intrigued since the first became quite well known and the others I didn't even know existed. Second, Dickens always plays with the huge gulf between rich and poor, and he does that very well again in this short story highlighting the way the rich thought of the poor as children, and disobedient lazy children that should be.. Riveted_Reader_Melissa ...smart enough to never marry or have more poor children etc, which sad to say rings more true of the views in today's society with ever passing year (definitely not part of that era we want to be emulating). But what I really liked was how he flipped A Christmas Carol over in this one. A Christmas Carol was about Scrooge (the rich man) not appreciating his life and the people in it and what they might be going through because he was so self.. 7y

Riveted_Reader_Melissa ...absorbed and convinced that they were all taking advantage of his time, money etc. This one took the poor man basically through the same journey. He started out believing the hype about the poor being innately bad, worth little, etc and through his goblin visits of the future, he saw how even people he loved could come to terrible ends with the perfect storm of unforeseen circumstances (nothing to do with innate anything) & he also learned... Riveted_Reader_Melissa ... to be more forgiving of the strife/circumstances of others and not write them off immediately. Now I admittedly liked the ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future more than the goblins as the catalyst part, but I liked that the first forced the rich man to look at those around him with more open eyes and this one did the same for the poor man, because often the poor man still buys into the hype of society as a whole and instead of .... 7y

Riveted_Reader_Melissa ...reaching out to others, falls into the: 'well at least my children are industrious and hard working (seamstresses), they aren't lazy, they'd never commit the crimes of those horrible (fill in minority group, welfare recipient, criminal here), so we are still better than (XYZ) and those delinquents aren't worth (whatever).' I thought it tackled pretty well the, they could be any of us but for the grace of (whatever deity) & the luck of birth 7y

I feel like I maybe should have read this one...despite the excellent narration, the story itself may need to be print to be best absorbed--at least for me. 7y

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Whew....glad it made some sense, I felt like I was rambling on there a bit. But yes, I completely understand.... loved the narrator's voice, but it was very easy to listen to the voice and sort of tune out the story. It was not an audiobook I could listen to while I did other things, when I tried I had to rewind because I'd missed something. I think some of it was the old English vernacular, if I wasn't actively listening I missed things. 7y

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I think it was in the introduction that they mentioned that A Christmas Carol was the first annual Christmas story of 5, the Chimes #2. So if the first is about the rich man not being able to enjoy Christmas because he feels mooched off of, & the 2nd is about the poor man not being able to enjoy Christmas because he thinks that no matter how hard he tries it won't get him anywhere (i.e. His friend who would be arrested no matter his just reason).. 7y

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Or (his daughter not getting married because she was basically too poor and lowly for that), then what did he write about in the others.... made me curious there too. 7y

Dickens always does such a great job depicting the chasm between the rich & poor in his work, and this one not only does that discrepancy justice, but is also quite timely today. There are magical figures once again showing our characters the error of their thinking, but it takes quite a different turn then the better known A Christmas Carol, and in today's rhetoric of lazy ne're-do-wells perhaps it is even more poignant. Great narration also!

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I must admit though that Audible gave this lovely little audiobook away as a Christmas gift to its customers last year, and I'm finally listening to it this holiday season. I didn't even realize that A Christmas Carol was the first in a series of holiday stories written by Charles Dickens, but I will definitely be checking out the rest of that series. 👍 7y
