The last book of the Shardlake series and as full of the twists and turns that you'd expect. I love these characters, and Nicholas is a fine addition but I did wonder if Matthew will ever learn from past mistakes, it seems not.
This book sees Matthew return to the double crossings and manipulations of Henry VIII's Court, fraught with the ever shifting agendas, religious alliances, and Henry's ever changeable moods.
A fantastic end to the series.
My first completed book for #OutstandingOctober. 😃
This is the 6th and possibly penultimate book in the Shardlake series. Our Tudor era lawyer is once again drawn into political machinations when he is asked by Lord Parr to find a stolen manuscript on behalf of his niece, Queen Catherine. Hotheaded Nicholas Overton is a good addition as an apprentice lawyer. As usual, Shardlake doesn‘t know when to let sleeping dogs lie, which leads to danger.
Finnished my reading.
Love the history of the Tudor. A story full of intrigue and conspiracy. An excellent description of the glittering castle on the one side and the smell of death on the other. Such was life at the Tudor castle.
#croatianedition
My new reding. Love it. Love historic novels, especially when it comes about Tudors.

I weigh my holidays on the number of books read so this 700 page monster which as 6th in the wonderful shardlake series has been sat on my shelf for a while due to its size + guess what I finished it really quickly as i was totally thrown back into his tudor world. Here Catherine parr asks for the lawyers help to find a piece of writing on religion that could have her head. Brilliant research about the period adds to the joy of these books.

Summer of 1546 and King Henry VIII is dying. The Queen's manuscript is missing and the King has not seen it yet and would consider it to be heresy. Matthew Shardlake is hired to help her find it. This is my favorite historical mystery series and should not be missed. Excellent plots and unique characters makes for a series that is truly a literary masterpiece.

I think we know surprisingly many things only one third into the book. I am not surprised that the burning is a main theme! A lot of beheadings ahead. What do you think Bealknap was talking about? Did you feel sorry for him? What did you think about the citizen‘s arrest? And what about the book? Why hasn‘t it been used? How many people will die in this book... @EadieB @Andrew65 @TiredLibrarian
So, how is everyone liking it? What about her book - Lamentation? Thoughts? Who took it and why? To create a scandal? To show it to the King? To gain something from her? Do you think the burning has a bigger meaning throughout the book?
Starting the Buddy Read of Lamentation ready for tomorrow. At 768 pages and work it will take me more than 5 days to get through. Reading this with @EadieB @Tove_Reads @TiredLibrarian

This is book 6 in the excellent Shardlake Series by C J Sansom, set during Henry VIII‘s reign.
My #NewestBook is Lamentation, book 6 of the Shardlake Series which I bought an audiobook version of today and picked up the physical book from the library today so I can mix and match in the Buddy Read with @Tove_Reads And @EadieB
We will be doing this starting on 14th January - others are free to join us.

I was lent two of C.J.Sansom‘s books by my Uncle, Dissolution and Lamentation. These are of the same series, but have several books in between. However I didn‘t feel like this book lost anything with me not having read the others in the series. Events of importance were noted briefly in the main story, and was easy to follow despite having only met the main character previously.
This was a slow burner, but picked up quickly and was enjoyable!

Beautiful brown covers from the Shardlake series. The cover of Lamentation depicts an old wooden door and Dark Fire‘s cover looks like an old manuscript.
I‘ve posted about this series before but I just love it.
I am now up to date with the Shardlake series. Lamentation is set in the period of Henry VIII‘s, last days as his health fails and his paranoia reaches new heights. Shardlake is tasked by the Queen to recover “The Lamentations of a Sinner” a book she authored and which has been stolen and could change the balance between the radicals and conservatives. This story is good involving less successful detection and more historical palace politics
#Shelfie showing authors I ❤️ (because it's impossible to choose just one): J. K. Rowling, C. J. Sansom and Zadie Smith #riotgames #17booklove
This book is about a book written by the queen whose subject matter could disrupt the nation if published, so great means are undertaken to find the book with lives lost and at stake over it. This is as close to a #bookwithinabook I could find. #readjanuary
I love this series of historical mysteries about a hunchback lawyer investigating cases in Tudor England. This one takes place during 1546 at the end of the reign of King Henry VIII and deals specifically with Queen Catherine Parr and the religious turmoil of the time. Sansom's descriptions of London in the 1540s are fantastic and the characters intriguing.

New batteries in my book light tonight because most of the books left to read for this year are actual print copies instead of the ebooks I normally read before bed.
I'm also really enjoying being back in this historical setting that Sansom describes so clearly, but there are so many questions running through my head about what is going on!

I'm finally getting started on the next book in this historical mystery series. It's also one of the last two books on my list for this year's Read Harder challenge!

The hunchback lawyer/detective set in Tudor England is simply the #bestnarrator. Matthew Shardlake is introspective (helped by his handicapped condition) and so very thoughtful about the times he lives in. He is forever changing his perspective based on new worldly developments. We desperately need someone like him nowadays. #octphotochallenge
