After reading Hogan's other books this one was a bit of disappointment. Honestly, it would have much better without the Alice and Mattie component because Masha and her friends were perfectly intriguing and entertaining on their own. I also enjoyed the lessons on Victorian cemeteries and death customs 🪦⚰️

I've been wanting to read this for a long time. So excited to dive in

My April Book Club read - a story of loss and redemption. After the loss of her son, Masha struggles to do more than endure living in a world without him. A meeting with Sally-Red-Shoes in the local cemetery opens her eyes to a world full of possibilities.

My third completed book of 2021 and my favorite. It‘s a story of grief but there‘s warmth, humor and moments of joy. I only wish that the story was a bit longer. #doublespin

If I had known the subject matter of this book, I probably wouldn‘t have read it, but I am really glad I did. I liked this book even more than Hogan‘s first book. The MC‘s journey through her grief seemed very realistic. And I always enjoy a book with quirky characters.

I really like this author‘s character building. She hits it out of the park. I enjoyed the story about learning to live again through grief, but I did see every plot development coming from miles away so it didn‘t quite live up to Keeper of Lost Things for me. Still a fun journey!

I think I liked this more than her first book. It was a story that didn't try to be too happy and included the bad things which is real life. I thoroughly enjoyed it and look forward to reading her third book

Masha lives a life of self-imposed emotional isolation. Her grief and guilt over her son's death have become her dark companions, an addiction of sorts. Gradually Masha surfaces both literally in the pool, and figuratively from her grief. It is then that her swimming becomes a joy rather than a punishment.

Thank you, Ruth Hogan, for this book. It is an incredibly moving story of grief, and of the resilience and beauty of the human spirit.

Loved this. Ruth Hogan has such a magical way with words. Still unsure how I felt about the twist/ending. But just the way she writes makes her a favorite for me.

Beautiful heartbreaking story about a woman living with debilitating grief who chooses to live again after she meets an inspiring group of quirky characters. This wasn‘t as good as her latest book but still an enjoyable read.

“The Wisdom of Sally Red Shoes” is a quick and easy read but it‘s one full of heartbreak. Ruth Hogan is skilled at creating quirky characters that you can‘t help but love but I felt I couldn‘t connect with this book as much as I would have liked. It‘s 3 stars from me.

Lovely read about coming to terms with grief. Probably not best to read if the grief is very new though. I cried a couple of times, but I would still call this an uplifting read. There‘s a little twist that you will probably guess, but it‘s not the centre of the story so it doesn‘t really matter.
One of my IRL friends recommended this so I felt I had to read and she was right!

Masha is drowning in order to feel close to her son, who drowned many years before. But with the help of a truly fabulous array of friends, Masha starts to swim back to life.
I loved the characters in this book. They are so varied and vivid that encountering them is like finding a new favourite in a tin of Quality Street - you will want to savour them and come back for more.
Emotionally weighty but you come away with a sense of joy and hope.

This was a pick rather than a PICK! I loved Hogan‘s first book but spent too long with this book wondering where it was going and how the two stories would cross paths. It had a very hopeful positive ending which I did love, but although the lead character was fun, I just think the whole book was just nice rather than amazing.

Starting on this on a quiet early Sunday morning. My husband and eldest daughter spent the night in the tiny tent in the garden, while the littlest and I slept in my bed... I bet I had the comfiest night, but still we were up first. Making the most of it by getting a few pages in. Loved Hogan‘s last book, so have high hopes that this has the same heart-warming vibe. I have read a few tough-going books lately, so need something sweet.

So-so on finishing, downgraded to pan on reflection. It was a two-fold 'ugh'. I didn't like it and I didn't think it was very good. The writing is actually quite good but I wasn't sure what it wanted to be - serious reflection on child loss & grief or quirky humorous romance. I was irritated by pointless scenes that, delightful as they were, were totally superfluous to the plot & contributed to the descent into tweedom. Continued in comments ⬇⬇⬇⬇
