Not having read this for many years and it not being my favorite Austen (it still isn‘t) this reread has made me appreciate it and it‘s characters more. I enjoyed it. 😊 #classicschallenge2020

For the #classicschallenge2020 I‘m starting January with Sense and Sensibility and The Count of Monte Cristo. I‘ll be working on Monte Cristo for awhile because it‘s an absolute monster. I think I‘m going to read all of the Jane Austen books this year. @Reviewsbylola

Reviewsbylola That‘s a beautiful cover of S&S. It‘s the only one of Austen‘s books that I didn‘t love so I hope a reread makes me appreciate it more. 3w

Time with family and an annoying cold have cut down my desire to read this past week, but I have been watching movies. I basically loved all of them (well, for Hallmark movies), though Sense, Sensibility & Snowmen (loosely based on the tagged book) was probably my least favorite. #wintergames #merryreaders

I‘d not read Jane Austen before this book, but it was just what I expected (in a good way). A great leisurely read with barely any plot, but lots of drama. Austen‘s writing was snarky and observant. I was a little surprised that there seems to be a distinct winner of the Sense vs. Sensibility debate. There was some adjustment to character in both directions, but Marianne definitely gains more sense than Elinor does sensibility.

quote
Books_n_Whatnot
Sense and Sensibilty | Jane Austen

Last sentence of the novel made me chuckle because my sister and I could NEVER

“—and among the merits and the happiness of Elinor and Marianne, let it not be ranked as the least considerable, that though sisters, and living almost within sight of each other, they could live without disagreement between themselves, or producing coolness between their husbands.”

quote

“I have not wanted syllables where actions have spoken so plainly.”

“There is something so amiable in the prejudices of a young mind, that one is sorry to see them give way to the reception of more general opinions.”

quote

“Elinor agreed to it all, for she did not think he deserved the compliment of rational opposition.”

‘Oh!' cried Marianne, ‘with what transporting sensations have I formerly seen [Norland‘s dead leaves] fall! How have I delighted, as I walked, to see them driven in showers about me by the wind! What feelings have they, the season, the air altogether inspired! Now there is no one to regard them.‘ ...

‘It is not everyone,‘ said Elinor, ‘who has your passion for dead leaves.‘”

Linsy @charl08 I understand why people feel that way, but I love her! Might be because when I first encountered her I was a lovesick 19-year-old. I related most to Marianne at the time, and hope that I still have a bit of that in me. 2mo

An abbreviated version of the classic story, complete with illustrations. It‘s cute, and would be good for people who are concerned about understanding the language or intimidated by the length of the original novel. One change made to the story is its narration by Margaret, the youngest sister. I liked that the back listed all the changes made, some history, and a small bibliography. #deweysoct book 3

rubyslippersreads I think it would be really fun to hear the story from Margaret‘s POV. 3mo
LauraBrook @rubyslippersreads It kind of was! Even though in this one Margaret comes with Elinor and Marianne to London (and seems to be in her early teens), it was nice to have a known narrator. 3mo

3.5 stars. Not my favorite Austen, but still worth the read. Scandal and flirtation and a sweeping obsession with money. The characters are full of spunk and individuality. I‘m bemoaning the fact that my one “ship” of the book never came to fruition.

For all my Love of Pride & Prejudice; I must say that Sense & Sensibility has one of the best Literary Heroes - Colonel Brandon. Now when I read this Classic I always see him as the perfection that is Alan Rickman from the movie. Colonel Brandon is a quiet unobtrusive man for the most part. However, when you need a Hero he always comes through. 💙💙💙💙💙

August‘s classic pick for our Tequila Mockingbird bookclub is one that I‘ve read countless times and love. Reading it is like hanging out with a good friend.

Schlinkles @DGRachel I have a large Jane Austen collection and I have a hard time buying the editions of Northanger Abbey to complete sets because it‘s my least favorite. My OCD wins out in the end. 6mo

Welcome to Hour 33 of #24in48, which for many of our US readers is roughly the start of Day 2. Quick check-in to see how things are going; we've seen a few people already hit 24 hours (amazing!) and some others with big plans for today. If you're not going to hit 24, that's cool too! Remember, this is all about making time and space for reading. (And don't forget to hop over to 24in48.com to see if you won one of this hour's door prizes.)
