Just finished watching the movie on Netflix while I paced the hallways. I managed to get in 12,500 steps already, so I might have a real shot at hitting the 100,000 during today‘s #LitsyWalkathon! 💪🏻 I really enjoyed the movie, and I‘ll definitely be reading the book soon. ♥️

Sweet story, about loss, love and learning how to love yourself. (Body and mind) Even though her heart loved someone her mind couldn't let herself fully give into that because she felt less than everyone else. 3/5 ⭐

Great YA story about self confidence and self esteem. The messages are straightforward, making them perfect for the target audience(and adults who are struggling and need it slammed in their face). Cute, funny, relatable and motivational. Great book. Can‘t wait to watch the TV show now

While I don‘t share a body type with Willowdean, I‘ve also never been “willowy.” (And I could never pull off a pixie cut; that‘s a different issue, entirely, but also very upsetting.) In college, the excessively bro-y roommate of my Freshman Year boyfriend called me “thick but hot.” Or maybe it was “hot but thick.” I choose to believe that it was the former because it‘s slightly more complimentary. Whatever.

*Review/confessional cont‘d below👇🏻

monalyisha 1/6: It was before “thicc” was a (culturally-appropriated) thing. You get the idea. I‘ve struggled with body image. I‘ve been late for plans (& even work) because I didn‘t like the way that any of my clothes looked on me in the mirror. I‘ve subconsciously pulled away from a romantic touch because I was sitting in the “wrong” position & I didn‘t want my partner‘s fingertips grazing my muffin-top. (edited) 2mo
monalyisha 2/6: I‘ve listened to my mom denigrate her own body & I‘ve internalized it. So, when I saw a review calling “Dumplin‘” out for *pretending* to be body-positive, I took offense. From where I sit (with my rolls gathering beneath my under-boob; ladies, you know what‘s up), Dumplin‘ *isn‘t* pretending. It‘s just honest about the struggle. (edited) 2mo
monalyisha 3/6: It‘s HARD to be feminist & to feel self-conscious about your appearance at the same time. You want to not care about your hairy legs, or the warts on your fingers, or the size of your thighs. You hold up Renaissance women as your personal beauty standard, claim a kinship with witches, & say your lap has more room for puppies. (edited) 2mo
See All 20 Comments
monalyisha 4/6: But saying it & feeling it aren‘t always the same thing. I like that Julie Murphy doesn‘t ignore this dissonance, this gap (which deserves more attention than the thigh-gap). (edited) 2mo
monalyisha 5/6: Willowdean isn‘t perfect. She isn‘t perfectly imperfect. She *does* feel real. This “realness,” this struggle, doesn‘t go away. That doesn‘t mean that the character — or that the story — is weak. (edited) 2mo
monalyisha 6/6: Plus, the book has a fraught (but evolving) mother-daughter relationship, & a sweet, sexy romance, to boot. This is compulsively-readable YA lit at its best. Haters gonna hate. 🙄🤷‍♀️ Me, I‘m a lover. (edited) 2mo
wanderinglynn Great review. 👍🏻 I haven‘t read the book, but I did watch the movie & loved. I agree that Willowdean felt real. The book is on my TBR. 2mo

HOTPock3tt I was *jokingly* called thick a few days ago and I‘m 5‘5 128lbs 🙄 I was also described as hourglass-y as opposed to thin 😓 the pressure that‘s put on women in our society. 2mo

monalyisha @BethM & @mcipher I hope you like it, too! It‘s definitely YA — lots of smooching & some complicated friend drama — but also thoughtful & fun. I‘ll look forward to reading your posts! 2mo

I don't usually two read children's or young adult books back to back but I let my son choose my next read for me from my TBR stack. I was overwhelmed by choice. He didn't know anything about any of the books and didn't ask. I guess this just spoke to him. I'm sticking to his pick and so far so good.

For the first time in years, I read a book in one sitting. And it was this book.
I loved it, for several reasons. One was the mostly light-hearted first person narrative, but the main reason was that it was relatable. As a girl that's been fat all my life, as a girl who has even been too scared to do certain things because of how I look and how I thought I'd reflect on others, I totally understood Willowdean.

5/5 Stars. I‘m glad that authors are expanding and creating more plus-sized characters! This book was fantastic. It was easy to get into, and stay engaged in the story. (I would also recommend the movie! Although it doesn‘t stick to the plot 100%, it was still fantastic.)

Near-universally relatable sentiment, I should think. The rest of this novel was less so to me. I probably would have liked it more when I was a teenager, but although I still do enjoy some YA, this book was a miss for me. The secondary characters felt underdeveloped and the protagonist too apologetic.

I did not expect to love this book as much as I did. I loved Will and her insecurities, but yet not compromising on who she is. I loved her love of her best friend and how she fought for that friendship. And yet went beyond her comfort to form new friendships.

My main motivation for reading this was because I wanted to watch the Netflix movie. Now I am afraid watching the movie might spoil what I have created in my own head 😁

JenlovesJT47 Same here! I‘m currently reading it and I think I sometimes make the mistake of watching the movie too soon after finishing the book, which kind of ruins the experience for me. Oh well! Can‘t stay away 😆 4mo

I didn't think I would enjoy this book. It started out pretty corny and I thought it was going to be a lost cause. But it got much better. It deals with self esteem, body shaming, love, friendship and a few other things thrown in. There are some lines that had me LOL for real. It is a great book for teen girls. I read this for the 2019 SWON TRC, which is in its last week.

I loved Will's character! She is the most badass, realistic teen character I think I have encountered yet in YA contemporary fiction. I really liked the fat representation, too - it was done in a real way without sugarcoating anything. The romance was cute and fun, but I liked that the friendship element of the story was really more important. This is definitely one more people should read!

Willowdean is a pretty and confident fat girl, until she meets a boy she likes. And then she starts to have issues with her body. Meanwhile, she's also dealing with bereavement. Willowdean's struggles rang true, and I enjoyed her band of friends.

I liked this book, but didn't love it. The pacing seemed a little slow in the first half of the book, but that may be because I thought the book was primarily about Willowdean competing in the pageant.

This didn‘t turn out to be quite the comfort read I wanted it to be, but I still enjoyed it. Completely related to Willowdean‘s grief and the process of going through the things loved ones leave behind, but mostly just loved watching an unconventionally pretty young girl come to love herself and learn to accept love from others.

Dare I say it? I may have preferred the movie to the book in this case. Perhaps being forced to condense the material for visual release took care of some issues that detracted from the book. The story is good, overall; but some parts felt repetitive or unnecessary. I'm glad I read it even though I didn't love it.
