Emily of New Moon
Emily of New Moon | Lucy Maud Montgomery
Emily Starr never knew what it was to be lonely - until her beloved father died. Now Emily's an orphan, and her mother's snobbish relatives are taking her to live with them at New Moon Farm. She's sure she won't be happy Emily deals with stiff, stern Aunt Elizabeth and her malicious classmates by holding her head high and using her quick wit. Things begin to change when she makes friends: with Teddy, who does marvelous drawings; with Perry,

I love L.M. Montgomery‘s description, especially of the natural world. I love this story of a creative and strong willed girl. It‘s been too long since I read it, and I‘m so glad to have revisited Emily.

It‘s been a long time since I read Emily of New Moon and I know this literary reference meant nothing to me the last time I read it. Now, thanks to Litsy, I have read both of these books and can appreciate the reference.

charl08 Do you think LM was acknowledging Austen mentioning Udolpho, or had actually read them? 4d
Daisey @charl08 I have no evidence, but I find it entirely believable that she read them herself. 4d

I don‘t know what took me so long to read LM Montgomery‘s other books, other than not knowing they existed 😂 Anne will always be my favorite but Emily is a close second. I‘ve seen others say that this is like a darker Anne and I‘d agree with that. I wanted to reach through the book and give the poor girl a hug!

My #bookspin books, plus a reread of The Kitchen House, along with my current library books make up my February TBR. I will probably get one or two more library holds in before the end of the month too.

I tried to read this as part of @TheBookHippie children‘s lit read along, but it just didn‘t hit the right note. Montgomery accurately portrays the thoughts of an imaginative young girl (the flashbacks to my middle school diary were embarrassing). But the book reminded me of V.C. Andrews without the incest and murder. There‘s weird wealthy family members with secrets, a fake poisoning plot, and a controlling mother. I prefer My Sweet Audrina.🤷‍♀️

rubyslippersreads The spooky stuff is one of the reasons I 💜 Emily. (Maybe V. C. Andrews read Emily too. 😏) 2w

Dear, dear little Emily, an orphan so full of wonder and life. Her spunk, integrity, loyalty, love of words and willingness to stand up for herself make her a charming heroine in this #Canadian classic. It‘s been decades since I first read this and I am grateful to @TheBookHippie for selecting it as a one-chapter-per-day read for January. #childrensclassicread

Elizabeth Murray had learned an important lesson—that there was not one law of fairness for children and another for grownups.

Lindy @Purpleness Here‘s a quote just for you: “Girl, you‘ve used purple twice in the same poem.” [said Mr Carpenter.] “It‘s such a lovely word,” said Emily. 2w
Purpleness @Lindy I do love how LM Montgomery uses purple so much in her works! She uses it all the time in her descriptions. 2w

This will always be a favourite. I'm so glad to find the magic still there, though how could I have doubted it! I love Emily so much and can still relate to her; there's so much wisdom here about how to be as a person, or how to find one's way. Truly a balm for the soul. 💜

Day 30: #inane
Can you just imagine cutting your bangs right up to the hairline??? I just get the giggles thinking about how she would have looked. 😂
#quotsyjan20

TK-421 😂 3w
Lifeisasnap I read this book to my little sister, she decided she had to have Emily‘s hair & it was horrible looking... my mom has pictures of herself after she took scissors to her own hair in the mid 50‘s & she posted it on our fridge right after my sister cut off her bang just to let my sister know tons of girls had done it too. I asked them both why they‘d do that especially my sister after i told her how Emily said it was “worse and worse”. 😂 (edited) 3w
amber_ldsmom @Lifeisasnap That‘s hilarious! 🤣 I hope my daughters don‘t get the same idea, lol. 3w

Lifeisasnap @amber_ldsmom you‘re right it was, and still is hilarious. We never let her or my mom forget it. The most hilarious part was she had just turned 8 and her baptism and school spring photo had this little bit of hair standing up where her cowlick was in the center of the front of her head, almost like alfalfa but on the front instead of back. 🤣 poor kid. 3w
Lifeisasnap @amber_ldsmom keep the scissors out of reach, that‘s for sure! 3w
amber_ldsmom @Lifeisasnap 😂 That‘s great! BTW, do you happen to be LDS? I only ask because you said your sister was 8 when she was baptized, so I wondered. 3w

Everybody who has ever lived in the world and could string two rhymes together has written a poem on spring. It is the most be-rhymed subject in the world—and always will be, because it is poetry incarnate itself. You can never be a real poet if you haven‘t made at least one poem about spring.

I‘ve been seeing posts throughout the month for the #ChildrensClassicRead2020 of Emily of New Moon and really wanted to join in. However, my Emily books were missing from my shelf, and it took me a while to figure out who I had loaned them to. I feel as if I walked into my Nanny's kitchen and she turns and grabs me and says, "Tammy Lynn, I shore have missed you. Sit down so I can feed you" while George or Pete is digging into the flesh of my shins because he's missed me too.

My Nanny died 2 months ago. I was afraid it would be too painful to read. It wasn't. It was calming and soothing as being in Nanny's kitchen used to be. Thank you Nanny for Montgomery and Alcott and your love.

"...She was a silly, ungrateful, disobedient girl. I hope you will never disgrace your family by such conduct."

"Oh, Aunt Elizabeth," said Emily breathlessly, " when you hold the candle down like that it makes your face look just like a corpse! Oh, it's so interesting."

Aunt Elizabeth turned and led the way upstairs in grim silence. There was no use in wasting perfectly good admonitions on a child like this.

One night when the Rev Mr Dare was here to tea I used the word bull in my conversashun. I said Ilse and I were afraid to go through Mr James Lee‘s pasture because he had a cross bull there. After Mr Dare had gone, Aunt Elizabeth gave me an awful skolding and told me I was never to use that word again. But he had been talking of tigers at tea and I can‘t understand why it is more disgraceful to to talk about bulls than tigers.
