I love the Wayward Children series and book 4 was excellent. This is Lundy‘s story of her adventures in the Goblin Market. So vivid and excellent. And of course I have to love how odd and bookish she was as a child📚
Was SO interesting to see how a major character in book 1 began...and to wonder which type of world would open for me!

I very much enjoyed this graphic novel biography of Agatha Christie. It‘s not a straight narrative but instead a variety of snapshots. Which is actually a great way to span all the high (and low) points in her long life. Some of her characters show up too!
The art is fantastic. Thumbs up!

Five Little Pigs | Agatha Christie
post image
Pickpick

This is a fun one where Poirot investigates a crime from 16 years prior - with suspects narrowed to five ‘little pigs‘ as the rhyme keeps playing in his head. I liked the structure and how each person interviewed adds bits to the overall story. Poirot always spots the important bits even when people‘s memories are blurry. Or they are lying. Lots of feminist zingers especially in regard to cheating husbands.

So so so so good! A brilliant book 2! It picks up 5 years after City of Brass which in many ways is perfect. The world is brilliant, the characters - for good and bad - are intense, the magic is f*cking amazing. And the ending is crazy fantastic.
And yes, it is a cliffhanger—that I will gladly hang off of for however long it takes for the finale to be published...

#bookanistabookclub #seriesread

Melissa_J Well this confirms it. If the second book also ends in a cliffhanger I won‘t be giving this trilogy a try until all three books are published. 4mo

Tore through book 3 for another notch in my 2019 #seriesread goal! While I have seen complaints online that this book did not have enough of Noah, I think that was good & necessary for Mara to evolve as she does in this book. It was nice to not be distracted by Noah‘s perfect perfection for a bit 😁
Most strings are tied up and backstories come together. I found it satisfying, if exhausting. Series reads can be contradictory like that, eh?

Back in 2012 when book 1 in this series came out, I decided I had to wait for the rest of the series because of the batshit cliffhanger ending. I bought them, never got back to it. This is the year to tackle my #seriesread though!
Very glad I came back to this mind-bending creepy series. I still don‘t know what‘s ‘really‘ going on (is it paranormal or real-life baddies?) but I am invested again. This one also ended on a cliff so on to bk 3...

The Body in the Library | Agatha Christie

What a delight! I was having a stress attack trying to choose what to read next and picked this on a whim. Perfect palette cleanser that sucked me right in and along. I was surprised at the more lighthearted snarky tone of a Marple novel - this must technically be my first! Not my last 💕
And in the intro Christie explains how she wanted to tweak the common ‘body in the library‘ trope.

Puns, and wit, and snooty snark abound in these cartoons from Tom Gauld. I absolutely love that they collected just the literary ones for us in this chunky little brick of a book. Has a lovely hardcover on it even though the postcards do feel like they could be torn out. If you were a heathen who vandalizes books, that is. This chunky graphic novel is the surprisingly interesting story behind the classic game Tetris. Fascinating to read how & who created it in Russia, how complicated the rights situations were, the various players‘ maneuvers to grab onto the lucrative popularity of it. I had no clue there was such a story behind this game I grew up with! The art is also delightful - black & white with bursts of yellow. I was itching to play on finishing this read...

While I had mixed feelings about Jane Austen being a character, this was a delightful Christmasy read and almost a How-To for throwing a 12 day Regency Christmas - with a bit of murder, of course. Nice dose of history mixed with characters that felt straight out of her novels.

A festive holiday read! I thought it would be amusing to pick a nice bloody murder (Agatha dedicates this one to a friend who wanted more blood in contrast to her usual civilized murders 😹) to get in the holiday spirit - but the way it all wraps up neatly, it really is a nice comfy read! Plus, Poirot calling all of his suspects stupid in his wrap-up? =
A priceless holiday gift 🎁

As a huge fan of her previous book Eva Lavender, I was looking forward to this and it delivered with beautiful writing and thick atmosphere. This one is more obvious/real with the magic but darker - with deep family issues, violence. Was a very interesting treatment of a MC who self harms, portrayed excellently from her point of view. Climactic action goes over-the-top—but for this gorgeous writing, I can forgive slight annoyances plot wise.

This Gaiman story originally appeared in the collection Trigger Warnings. Another Shadow Moon travel story that is perfect for this UK hardcover standalone treatment with super dark & creepy illustrations. This one is less mythic gods and more a mysterious foggy moors situation. Ghosts, past bad deeds, anger, and lies cause some danger - where yes, one god from Shadow‘s past may have helped him out...

Originally published in the short story collection Fragile Things, this UK hardcover edition is a fantastic return to the world of American Gods. Shadow has been traveling and here has an unsettling experience in England with weirdos who never say what they mean, hints of myth & undercover god types, but especially an overwhelming sense of unease and menace around him that is brilliantly captured in the creepy dark illustrations throughout.

This illustrated edition of what was originally just an ebook proves why print rules (for me at least!). I remembered nothing of the e version. Book 2 in the Athena Club series centering on the wonderfully ‘monstrous‘ daughters of literature‘s mad scientists goes farther in all senses: geographically, plot-twist-wise, and bringing in more fascinating characters. At 700+ pages it was a pain to drag around, but lots happens, lots learned, and the Athena gals continue their resourceful ways. I am looking forward to book 3 but most of all, this gives us the best version of Irene Adler EVER.

This novella is classic Connie Willis—even when you know what‘s going on, it twists unexpectedly. Jim, thru his blog Gone for Good, is a proponent of things disappearing when no longer useful. He stumbles into the mysterious Ozymandias bookshop that tweaks his worldview and spits him out with a new attitude. This ‘shop‘ is both a bibliophiles dream and worst nightmare. And due to its shortness, this tale sets your mind to racing onward on its own.

Book 2 in the series finds Kellen living by his wits with a bounty on his head. A blindfolded girl who can see, a dastardly spellslinger, conspiracy, and plenty of nasty commentary by our favorite squirrel cat all combine for a helluva adventure and a very nice progression from Kellen‘s initial story into a much bigger world of interesting magics, politics, and backstabbing. An interesting book in both plot & style: Mary Jekyll stumbles into intrigue with fellow daughters of dastardly scientists (Hyde, Moreau, Frankenstein) and even Sherlock & Watson join in. Murder & a secret society supply the action, but it‘s the backstories & bonding of the gals that is superb. I always travel with a Rick Steves guidebook because he highlights the best bits and gives most excellent tips. Love the drawn maps too.

Bags are packed and clearly my copy (above) is ready to travel! Since I don‘t read on vacation (busy seeing things!) you likely won‘t see me here much for a couple of weeks 🙀

If you want to see some photos I will be over on Instagram at elkeoh

See ya, my lovelies!

I always need a dose of humor in my nonfiction and believe it or not, I even got that in these essays about the death industry. Love Caitlin‘s voice and this book was informative, eye-opening, morbid, funny, and compassionate. She gives a backroom view of something most people avoid - but none of us can in the end! - and really gets you thinking, in a good way.

LeahBergen I want to read this one! 13mo
Sophoclessweetheart This sounds rather interesting actually x 13mo
