I was very excited this appeared on my doorstep today. I felt in a properly angry, feminist mood for it. Chapter 1 is just reminding me what a crap situation we are living in right now but I will keep on keeping on since her writing is so fun & conversational...

There is nothing quite like roadtripping with the Discworld witches! They grab their brooms and head off for some alternate fairy godmothering (to STOP a gal marrying a prince). As expected, the witches are awkward tourists disrespecting foreign foods & massacring languages. Along the way they encounter a suspicious number of stories and ‘rural legends‘ being acted out. A very satisfying story, with some Granny Weatherwax backstory revealed.

Very much enjoyed this book of Peculiar fairy tales. The tales are enjoyable, giving both a wider world view of their experiences along with lessons learned (hint: don‘t reveal you are Peculiar) and the artwork is GORGEOUS - not photos like the novels but amazing black and white drawings/etchings. These stories don‘t fit in a specific place within the series so pick it up anytime you like! You won‘t regret it.

This sequel to Sorcerer to the Crown is a delightful return to Regency London and our favorite characters all make appearances, but as supporting players! I found the new MC Muna quite engaging and her storyline involving mystery & magic, and a trip thru/to Faery, complimented and contrasted nicely with the world of Crown—with new plot twists layered on top. It is also self-contained so while there will be a book 3, this is nicely wrapped up.

Granted, Garth Nix‘s Old Kingdom series is a favorite so I was already inclined to like his new book. But the Three Musketeers vibe and setting are even more enjoyable than expected because he pairs it with an interesting historical set-up and more importantly, cool magic. I loved the magic and the characters. Those are my key needs fulfilled.
But the ARC had no map.
I am counting the days until it pubs in October (2019) so I can get me my MAPS.

I am surprised by the low % on this title because I found it to be a delightful YA retelling of Snow White with an awesome map, an amazingly vivid apple scenario, a fantastic twist on dragon magic, and the requisite plucky heroine and romance were endearing (and not annoying). A retelling that felt fresh. What else do you want? A definite enjoyable read if you like good winning over evil.

I very much enjoyed this new novella in the #RiversofLondon series. There is no Peter Grant though as it is set in Germany with his German counterparts investigating magical troubles near Trier which has plenty of Roman history + several rivers to draw on in creating magical mayhem. I would love more novels with this group & setting!
This does not fit into the series in a specific place—if you know the London set-up, just jump into this anytime!

Where her first book Enchantment of Ravens was all atmospheric fairy court/woods fabulousness, this title is a fast, fun adventure with tricky evil sorcerers, enchanted libraries of grimoires that speak to our MC, a mercurial & mysterious demon, and sassy romance. Five Little Pigs | Agatha Christie
post image
Pickpick

This is a fun one where Poirot investigates a crime from 16 years prior - with suspects narrowed to five ‘little pigs‘ as the rhyme keeps playing in his head. I liked the structure and how each person interviewed adds bits to the overall story. Poirot always spots the important bits even when people‘s memories are blurry. Or they are lying. Lots of feminist zingers especially in regard to cheating husbands.

As a huge fan of her previous book Eva Lavender, I was looking forward to this and it delivered with beautiful writing and thick atmosphere. This one is more obvious/real with the magic but darker - with deep family issues, violence. Was a very interesting treatment of a MC who self harms, portrayed excellently from her point of view. Climactic action goes over-the-top—but for this gorgeous writing, I can forgive slight annoyances plot wise.
