Having read the Twilight books quite some time ago, I went into this story with some trepidation. I was pleasantly surprised. I felt connected to the characters and invested in the story. Definitely much better than Bella and Edward in my opinion.

Also I‘m counting this as my #shelves pic for #30junebooks 😉

TheSpineView I loved the host! Have you read her other one, The Innocent Chemist? 2w
Kaila-ann @TheSpineView I haven‘t. I think i was hesitating on her other books because of the Twilight books. I‘ll have to check that one out. 2w
TheSpineView @Kaila-ann I liked The Chemist a lot. Better than Twilight and almost as good as The Host. 2w

I never read the Twilight series so I had no expectations for this book; I was happily surprised by the story. Wanderer, a soul placed in the human body of Melanie is expected to be alone but instead, Melanie is unwilling to give up her body...and wants to journey find her brother and love. I found this story an engaging dystopic sci fi book that, even though a thick 620 pages, held my interest to the end.

After reading the Twilight series what feels like many moons ago I was unsure what to expect from this. However not unlike in the Twilight books Meyer manages to convey her characters in such a way that you can‘t help but root for them! The story was unlike any other I‘ve read and if there were a sequel I would definitely be adding it to my TBR.

This great young adult (SF) read, would definitely be recommend for an older child in their teens for IR. It really explores how far society will go to protect their own by banning together. EL, for a novel at this level, I would provide either a bilingual book or a bilingual dictionary. https://www.teachhub.com/5-teaching-strategies-facilitate-independent-reading

Slow start, but I‘ve loved this book since it came out! It‘s engaging and the plot is so different from anything else I‘ve read. The character development is fantastic. I‘ve listened to this on audiobook a lot too, I put it on when I drive or when I clean. Trudging through the slow start can suck, but once she‘s in the caves it speeds up. Meyer grew up a lot between the Twilight saga and this, she really developed a good pace and style.

Day 8: Most overrated book

This book was a gift. Never read it, probably never will. Watched the film adaptation and wasnt entirely impressed with it. Didn't make me want to read it more or less. If anyone wants to take this off my hands, please don't be afraid to ask! #stepheniemeyer #thehost #meh

paulfrankspencer As someone who would never choose a book like this on my own, I followed a friend's suggestion and ended up enjoying it. I can't imagine a movie could come close to capturing what the book described. Too much internal dialogue. 6mo

I never thought I'd genuinely like a Stephanie Meyer book but this...this was something special. The shared conciousness between the main female characters was never taken to its full potential, and the main male character were still *heavyly* problematic at times, but overall the Host is a very well-written story with incredibly interesting world-building & unique pyschological concept. Highly recommended!!!

I never imagined I'd enjoy a Stephanie Meyer book.
But the psychology of sharing a body was interesting, though Meyer did not take full advantage of the possibility to develop more blended consciousness. Fun and engaging read, regardless.

I read so many books during middle school and high school and had so many favorites! But this book stood out to me during high school. I liked twilight well enough but thought the writing and story was lacking. But perhaps because this story was about aliens I was more into it and intrigued by the concept! If you haven‘t read it because you are not on team Twilight. Don‘t be so biased and read this book!

Puredragonstar I liked this one a lot flew right through it! It's been years, and I still remember the storyline. 😁 1y
ocdIrene Interesting idea, but her writing style doesn‘t work for me. She drags out what I consider meaningless details. Now GRR Martin does too, but he usually has reasons, even if that reason doesn‘t show up until another book. But Meyers doesn‘t seem to have a purpose for many descriptions. I remember a driving scene that went on for pages with nothing happening, no new info added. Just write that MC drove from A to B. The love “square” was annoying too 1y
Larkken I preferred the movie. The book became a bit preachy? Or maybe not that, maybe I'm thinking overly verbose on the uniqueness of humankind. Readable, though 1y

Not a fan of Twilight but I must say this story had a lot of potential - ignoring the cliche young girl/older guy love story! The emotions/pain the ‘soul‘ and ‘body‘ went through was captivating enough for me. It‘s an easy read, nothing extraordinary. Sappy but loved this quote - “It's not the face, but the expressions on it. It's not the voice, but what you say. It's not how you look in that body, but the thing you do with it. You are beautiful.”

I loved Twilight, so I kind of read this book a couple of years ago expecting it be something similar. But it‘s not. In a good way! This is an amazing book that deserves to be read by both Twilight fans and non-Twilight fans. I really, really love it! It‘s an intelligent story, about seeing the world through the eyes of both humans and aliens and about love, not only the romance kind, but a love of life in general. I really recommend this book!

I gotta say, Twilight felt like it had better action than this entire book. I haven't even finished, though I'm close enough to know it's unfortunately true. I felt like Meyer tried not to force an insta-love between the main characters so much, that Jared practically rapes Melony! Like, the sight of the first girl he saw, caused his testosterone to rise and forget sense! Forcing himself on her WASN'T romantic or even slightly attractive....
