Romeo and Juliet (Updated)
Romeo and Juliet (Updated) | William Shakespeare
In "Romeo and Juliet," Shakespeare creates a violent world, in which two young people fall in love. It is not simply that their families disapprove; the Montagues and the Capulets are engaged in a blood feud. In this death-filled setting, the movement from love at first sight to the lovers final union in death seems almost inevitable. And yet, this play set in an extraordinary world has become the quintessential story of young love. In part because of its exquisite language, it is easy to respond as if it were about all young lovers. The authoritative edition of "Romeo and Juliet" from The Folger Shakespeare Library, the trusted and widely used Shakespeare series for students and general readers, includes: -Freshly edited text based on the best early printed version of the play -Newly revised explanatory notes conveniently placed on pages facing the text of the play -Scene-by-scene plot summaries -A key to the play s famous lines and phrases -An introduction to reading Shakespeare s language -An essay by a leading Shakespeare scholar providing a modern perspective on the play -Fresh images from the Folger Shakespeare Library s vast holdings of rare books -An up-to-date annotated guide to further reading Essay by Gail Kern Paster The Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, DC, is home to the world s largest collection of Shakespeare s printed works, and a magnet for Shakespeare scholars from around the globe. In addition to exhibitions open to the public throughout the year, the Folger offers a full calendar of performances and programs. For more information, visit Folger.edu."

Unpopular opinion on one of the must reads for children. My school didn‘t have many books we HAD to read. Shakespeare has always been a big must in schools though. And I just don‘t get it! Firstly plays are terrible things to read, and second Romeo and Juliet is just such a bad love story! Don‘t get me wrong, Shakespeare is iconic. I would just rather watch them than read them.

8little_paws 100% agree about reading Shakespeare in high school. What was the point!? To teach kids adults only read dusty old classics? 2d
ElizaMarie Haha!!! I totally agree with you!!! But I do love this movie :) (edited) 2d
Megabooks I took some summer enrichment in Shakespeare in high school, but we had a passionate teacher who understood the text, was good at explaining it, and we acted them out. Without that level of teaching, I agree that it‘s pretty damn pointless in the average high school situation. 2d

Sace Even with a local Shakespeare theater I think it's pointless to teach him because our district makes it so hard to take a field trip none of the teachers take advantage of it 2d
BethM I 100% agree with you. 2d

Mehso-so

So for literature class, we had to read Romeo and Juliet. Here are my thoughts. —————————-
This is definitely not the book for everyone. The language is very nice and well thought out like all of Shakespeare‘s other works, but the story generally doesn‘t interest me. I believe it would be more interesting if I got to see it as a play, but currently, it is not for me. I do however appreciate the pacing.

The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet | William Shakespeare

I gotta admit that This Classic is Eternal. That's for sure.
Here are some beautiful lines from it:

¶ Thus with a kiss I die ¶.

¶ Love is a smoke made with the fume of sighs. ¶

¶ Come, gentle night; come, loving, black-browed night;

Give me my Romeo; and, when I shall die,

Take him and cut him out in little stars,

And he will make the face of heaven so fine

That all the world will be in love with night... ¶

(More in comments)

imitelis ¶ My bounty is as boundless as the sea,

My love as deep; the more I give to thee,

The more I have, for both are infinite. ¶
7mo
imitelis ¶ Don't waste your love on somebody, who doesn't value it ¶ 7mo
imitelis ¶ Do not swear by the moon, for she changes constantly. then your love would also change ¶ 7mo

imitelis ¶ Wisely and slow; they stumble that run fast. ¶ 7mo
imitelis ¶ hand

This holy shrine, the gentle fine is this:

My lips, two blushing pilgrims, ready stand

To smooth that rough touch with a tender kiss.

Juliet:

Good pilgrim, you do wrong your hand too much,

Which mannerly devotion shows in this;

For saints have hands that pilgrims' hands do touch,

And palm to palm is holy palmers' kiss.

Romeo:

Have not saints lips, and holy palmers too?
7mo
imitelis (Cont'd-). Juliet:

Ay, pilgrim, lips that they must use in prayer.

Romeo:

O, then, dear saint, let lips do what hands do;

They pray, grant thou, lest faith turn to despair.

Juliet:

Saints do not move, though grant for prayers' sake.

Romeo:

Then move not, while my prayer's effect I take.

Thus from my lips, by yours, my sin is purged.

Juliet:

Then have my lips the sin that they have took.

Romeo:

Sin from thy lips? O trespass sweetly urged!

Give me my sin again.

Juliet:

You kiss by the book. ¶

7mo
imitelis ¶ See how she leans her cheek upon her hand.

O, that I were a glove upon that hand

That I might touch that cheek! ¶
7mo
imitelis ¶ I defy you, stars ¶ 7mo
imitelis ¶ O, here

Will I set up my everlasting rest,

And shake the yoke of inauspicious stars

From this world-wearied flesh. Eyes, look your last!

Arms, take your last embrace! and, lips, O you

The doors of breath, seal with a righteous kiss

A dateless bargain to engrossing death! ¶
7mo
imitelis ¶ Why then, O brawling love! O loving hate!

O any thing, of nothing first create!

O heavy lightness, serious vanity,

Misshapen chaos of well-seeming forms,

Feather of lead, bright smoke, cold fire, sick health,

Still-waking sleep, that is not what it is!

This love feel I, that feel no love in this. ¶
7mo
imitelis ¶ Under love's heavy burden do I sink ¶ 7mo
imitelis ¶ You are a lover. Borrow Cupid's wings

and soar with them above a common bound. ¶
7mo
imitelis ¶ Love is a smoke raised with the fume of sighs;

Being purged, a fire sparkling in lovers' eyes;

Being vexed, a sea nourished with loving tears.

What is it else? A madness most discreet,

A choking gall, and a preserving sweet. ¶
7mo
imitelis *Here‘s what love is: a smoke made out of lovers' sighs. When the smoke clears, love is a fire burning in your lover‘s eyes. If you frustrate love, you get an ocean made out of lovers' tears. What else is love? It‘s a wise form of madness. It‘s a sweet lozenge that you choke on.* 7mo
imitelis ¶ A glooming peace this morning with it brings;

The sun, for sorrow, will not show his head:

Go hence, to have more talk of these sad things;

Some shall be pardon'd, and some punished:

For never was a story of more woe

Than this of Juliet and her Romeo. ¶
7mo
imitelis ¶ But, soft! what light through yonder window breaks?

It is the east, and Juliet is the sun.

Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon,

Who is already sick and pale with grief,

That thou, her maid, art far more fair than she.

Be not her maid, since she is envious;

Her vestal livery is but sick and green

And none but fools do wear it; cast it off.

It is my lady, O, it is my love!

Oh, that she knew she were! ¶
7mo
imitelis ¶ turn him into stars and form a constellation in his image. His face will make the heavens so beautiful that the world will fall in love with the night and forget about the garish sun. ¶ 7mo
imitelis ¶ Eyes, look your last!

Arms, take your last embrace!

And, lips, oh you the doors of breath, seal with a righteous kiss a dateless bargain to engrossing death! ¶
7mo
imitelis ¶ O! she doth teach the torches to burn bright

It seems she hangs upon the cheek of night

Like a rich jewel in an Ethiop's ear;

Beauty too rich for use, for earth too dear. ¶
7mo
imitelis ¶ Is love a tender thing? It is too rough, too rude, too boisterous, and it pricks like thorn. ¶ 7mo
imitelis ¶ He jests at scars that never felt a wound. ¶ 7mo
imitelis *It‘s easy for someone to joke about scars if they‘ve never been cut.* 7mo
imitelis ¶ I dreamt my lady came and found me dead

. . . . . . . . . . . .

And breathed such life with kisses in my lips

That I revived and was an emperor ¶
7mo
imitelis ¶ It were a grief so brief to part with thee.

Farewell. ¶

I finished this book this week with my freshman English students. I find it fulfilling that the majority of the students end up enjoying the story. When we begin, many of them (especially the boys) are convinced they will hate it. Then they realize how much fun it is to read and act out. I love it!

Dear Purists: Please be kind.

I really liked this adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, set in the suburb of Verona Beach. I love the dissonance between the modern characters, props, and setting and the Shakespearean English dialogue of the original play. It made for a surreal and beautiful experience that played well to my literary and artistic senses.
