I Think You're Wrong (But I'm Listening)
I Think You're Wrong (But I'm Listening): A Guide to Grace-Filled Political Conversations | Sarah Stewart Holland, Beth A. Silvers
75 posts | 29 read | 69 to read
Two friends on opposite sides of the aisle provide a practical guide to grace-filled political conversation while challenging readers to put relationship before policy and understanding before argument. More than ever, politics seems driven by conflict and anger. People sitting together in pews every Sunday have started to feel like strangers, loved ones at the dinner table like enemies. Sarah Stewart Holland and Beth Silvers say there is a better way. As working moms on opposite ends of the political spectrum and hosts of a fast-growing politics podcast, Holland and Silvers have learned how to practice engaging conversation while disagreeing. In I Think You're Wrong (But I'm Listening), they share principles on how to give grace and be vulnerable when discussing issues that affect families, churches, the country, and the world. They provide practical tools to move past frustration and into productive dialogue, emphasizing that faith should inform the way people engage more than it does the outcome of that engagement. This urgently needed new book reveals how to talk about politics in a way that inspires rather than angers and that pays spiritual dividends far past election day.

This fantastic book challenges Americans to start engaging with politics differently. To take off the jersey, to stop thinking of “sides,” and to start listening. They feature religion too heavily for my taste, but it didn‘t diminish their message, which is valuable, important, and, I think, our only way forward.

An open dialogue between a republican & a democrat who respect each other & are willing to find common ground. It‘s disturbing to realize how rare that kind of conversation is. I appreciate the tools and tips they provide to step outside of the echo chamber & work on keeping dialogue open with people you disagree with.

“Politician shouldn‘t determine our positions and values, our values should determine the policies and politicians we support.”

These Kentucky women belong to opposite political parties, but they still have a lot in common, both are cis, white, hetero, Christian mothers, & they make no bones about how that influences their approach policy. However in this book and their podcast, they go policy wonk and look at the roots of ideas like social security or universal healthcare, and what common ground can be found to improve these programs. Both are humble and their nuanced ⬇️

Megabooks ⬆️ views may prove useful for moderates, especially Southern ones, that want to begin constructive conversations in their communities. While this isn‘t perfect, it‘s as good a place as any for people to start a dialogue. Note: this book may piss you off in the beginning, but I appreciated their candor on reflection. #audiobook (edited) 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen I‘m not sure this is the right book for you (a bit too Christian), but you asked to be tagged in my reviews... I actually found out about this one from @britt_brooke 😊 3y
Bookwormjillk I didn‘t realize they had written a book. Thanks! 3y

Megabooks @Bookwormjillk yeah! I really want to listen to their podcast now. They definitely have an interesting, like they say, nuanced view on things. 3y
melissajayne @Megabooks their podcast, Pantsuit Politics, is excellent. 3y
Megabooks @melissajayne I can see that. The book is really thoughtful and made me re-examine certain biases I have. 3y
Cinfhen I remember @britt_brooke talking about this book awhile back. Right now I‘m trying to stay away from politics but I‘ll keep it on my #ReadersRadar 💓thanks, Meg! I‘d like to hear a POV from Christian women. 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen yeah, Britt and I were talking about it over in DMs on Instagram. Really interesting stuff! I‘m not a big podcast consumer, but I started following them on Instagram, and they definitely have interesting, very worthwhile perspectives to consider. 3y
britt_brooke @Megabooks I haven‘t listened to to Pantsuit Politics lately, but I believe Beth has starting leaning blue, because .... Trump. (edited) 3y
Chelsea.Poole I‘ve seen this one around and wondered if it was worthwhile. Thanks! 3y
Amandajoy I loved this book & their podcast. I always listen to it after all the other news & political podcasts in the morning because it helps me take a big breath. I‘m not religious, and when I first started listening to them (before Trump was elected!) I thought I wouldn‘t like it, but I appreciate how they present their faith without using it to bash you about the head or tell you you‘re an awful person. 3y
Kangaj1 I love this podcast. I still need to read the book... They are working on a new book now. 3y
britt_brooke @Amandajoy You‘re 100% right, they aren‘t in your face about their faith, but rather are very respectful that we‘re not all the same. I haven‘t listened in a while. I need to start again. 3y
Reviewsbylola I could be wrong, but I think @MicheleinPhilly put this one on my radar. I definitely plan to read it at some point, probably on audio. 3y
MicheleinPhilly @Reviewsbylola I read it because of @britt_brooke‘s recommendation. ☺️ I loved it. I wish it was more widely known because I think it‘s a very useful tool for respectful, civic engagement. 3y
britt_brooke @MicheleinPhilly Yes! I know Sarah. 💙 She‘s good people. It‘s a thoughtful read with good, reasonable insight. @Reviewsbylola The audio is good! (edited) 3y
Megabooks @britt_brooke yeah and I think they have a point that you don‘t have to vote a straight party ticket, especially in local elections. I voted for someone for school board that has different religious views than I because I felt she was the best qualified candidate, even if I may not agree on say, sex ed with her. 3y
Megabooks @Chelsea.Poole 👍🏻👍🏻 I‘d recommend it! 3y
Megabooks @Amandajoy yes, they are humble about their faith rather than vitriolic. The title of the book is totally appropriate, and I bet they are very respectful of those with other faiths (within or without Christianity). To me, that‘s part of what it means to be Christian. 3y
Megabooks @Reviewsbylola @MicheleinPhilly yes! I really liked how they looked at the historical aims of like social security or healthcare, how the needs of Americans have changed, and where we might find agreement. They talked about how politics changed in the 90s, and I think the virtual elimination of Southern Democrats, which were in some ways a 3rd party, really hurt across-the-aisle cooperation. (edited) 3y
Megabooks @Reviewsbylola anyway, it is really good on audio! 3y
Megabooks @britt_brooke I loved talking yesterday about the ways people we know connect. 💜 3y
britt_brooke @Megabooks Me, too! Love how small the world is sometimes. 💚 (edited) 3y
Amandajoy Exactly, which is why I still listen to them & support them on Patreon 😊 3y
Amandajoy @MicheleinPhilly when the book came out there was a campaign by listeners to get it into the hands of all members of Congress. Not sure how many actually read it... 3y
8little_paws I love their podcast. They are both blue now though, after Trump and how the R's have enabled him. I am not a faith-based person at all, I do not find their faith overbearing or anything in their show. I know they have another book in the works. I think I am more likely to read that then this older, pre-trumpish book. 3y
Megabooks @8little_paws I think the most off-putting part for non-Christians would be the Bible verses they reference at the end of each chapter, but the substance of the book is more policy from a historical and current needs-based perspective. Like they both, after discussion, decided that a universal basic income would be a good thing to replace the mishmash of welfare. They talk about interactions with fans of the podcast/blog, which was interesting. 3y
8little_paws @megabooks I am assuming Beth was still republican at the time of this book, right? It was before she left? I wouldn't mind the bible verses, while they aren't my thing it wouldn't distract me. 3y
Megabooks @8little_paws yes, she‘s still a Republican, but this is more about policy than politics. Finding common ground between traditionally Republican stances and traditionally Democratic ones in regards to things like healthcare, social security, drug addiction treatment vs incarceration, etc. 3y
8little_paws @megabooks Cool. Back before every day was a political crisis they used to do convos like that on their podcast, there was a great one on abortion. 3y

I read this in July, but still want to post a review—it‘s such an excellent & timely read. The authors (one from the right, one from the left) advocate setting aside a Republican/Democrat dichotomy to realize issues are far more complex & nuanced than the simple party line. If we seek to understand the personal values behind our positions, if we allow for that nuance & complexity—discussing politics can be a far more grace-filled endeavor.

“We are choosing division. We are choosing conflict.”
“We changed ‘you shouldn‘t talk about politics‘ to ‘you should only talk to people who reinforce your worldview.‘” Sarah and Beth are on opposite sides politically (Republican & Democrat) but share faith and a willingness to be open. Interesting discussions about politics, abortion, welfare, universal basic income, etc. Lots of religious references, but it fits with who they are as people.

3.5 hours of reading so far and I finished my first book of the #StayHome24in48 Readathon. A good read on having political discussions- authors have and acknowledge privilege, advocate for listening and nuance. Heads up, they are both religious and reference it but I think it would be readable for a non-religious audience.

katy4peas Interesting book choice... I'm not sure I could actually get through something like that right now.. even though this is when we most need it. We need more listening between opinions and less polarization. Thanks for sharing! Added to my stack! 4y

This book is a must read in this political environment we live in. It does have Christian themes throughout but it wasn‘t dominate, in case you aren‘t interested in a religious book. I love the way these two authors approach civility and reasoning. If you want to be part of the solution to our divisive environment this is a great start.

I absolutely loved this especially as I begin really “tuning in” to the 2020 election. I think that Americans‘ current inability to converse with one another in a respectful and substantive matter is an absolute travesty. And I‘ve been guilty of it at times but I resolve to do better and to be better. Thank you so much Britt for bringing this to my attention. 4🌟

DivineDiana Sounds like this could help me! My current strategies are silence and avoidance. 😕 5y

A fitting book to finish today. 🇺🇸 I loved the authors‘ focus on empathy and open-hearted listening. Good things could happen if more of us (self included!) put some of their tips into practice, such as being more curious, admitting our blindspots and assumptions, and embracing discomfort. Their perspective is Christian but not, IMO, exclusionary (they do get Bible-y, but mostly at the end of sections, so easy enough to skim/skip if desired).

britt_brooke So happy you liked this! I know I‘ve said it a million times, but I‘ve known Sarah since we were kids and it‘s just so fun to watch her success. The religious bits did not appeal to me, but the overall message was good. 5y
Christine @britt_brooke Aww, yes, that must be so special to see her work being so widely appreciated! I had heard good things about their podcast in the past but never tried; now I will definitely check it out. Thanks for giving this book the attention it deserves on Litsy! The religious stuff doesn‘t resonate with me now either, but I did grow up in an evangelical situation, so it was really interesting to hear how they related their beliefs to (cont.) 5y
Christine their differing positions on issues. And is helpful for me in terms of being more empathetic toward my many family and friends who have very different political leanings than I do. So thanks again for increasing the visibility of the book here! ❤️ 5y

Good:

—Several specific examples of how to talk about political disagreements

Not so good:

—Lots of generalizations about the need to treat each other with grace (true, but how many ways do we need to say it?)

—A fair amount of Christian perspective—not applicable to all audiences

Overall, not bad. I'm glad I own it (many thanks to @britt_brooke) and can refer back to it as I digest or need a refresher. I'll follow the authors.

I listened to half of the #audiobook, one of the authors‘ recent podcasts, the rest of the book, and another podcast. I appreciated the discussion of how to treat others with respect and understanding while delving deeper into contentious topics. It‘s a breath of fresh air amongst so much anger. Yet, the best aspect of the book may have been to introduce me to the podcast where they actually discuss issues in this manner.

#nonfiction #politics

Amandajoy This is one of my favorite podcasts. More people should be listening to it. 5y

So parts of this I thought were overly simplified (we totally disagree on this issue but we both agree this part is crappy). And I was confused why the Bible and religion had to play such a huge part but they bring up some really excellent points. As someone who is charged with teaching information literacy and critical thinking I think I do a poor job sometimes at informing myself of multiple sides of an issue. I need to do better.

I really enjoy the podcast “Pantsuit Politics” hosted by these two women, one from the left and one from the right. It is a very thought provoking book. You will get substantially more from the experience if you participate in the chapter challenges. I believe they chose to write in third person to show unity even as they disagree politically; however, it does lead to a distancing of the authors from the reader.
