A Week in Winter seemed a bit different than the other Maeve Binchy books I've read, but not in a bad way at all. I love how she wove so many different characters' lives together, and I love how we got to know each character's back story as well as how they changed because of their week at Stone House.

This was a reread, Binchy‘s novels are always comfort reads for me. Slowly we are introduced to new characters who are staying at an inn on the West Coast of Ireland. The chapters read like standalone shortstories, but they layer together to create a sweet picture of complicated people who cross paths during their week-long vacations. I love that there are not simple resolutions with every story. Some people don‘t change, others do, that‘s life.

Just finished my #doublespin @TheAromaofBooks !

Some of the chapters dragged on but it was a nice slice of life-esque novel with an interesting cast of characters. I wouldn't go out of my way to recommend it but it wasn't terrible. 😅🤷🏽‍♀️

so-so

Sadly the first Maeve Binchy book I pick up to read was her last written. It felt more like a collection of short stories and I think perhaps thats why I didn‘t love it. For years I have heard rave reviews about Maeve Binchy and I was somewhat expecting more of a Patrick Taylor type read where I could devour the beauty of Ireland and fall in love with the quaint and quirky characters. I didn‘t feel either with this read, but that won‘t deter me.

marleed I had the same experience with the same book last year. But I‘m going to give her another go this year. 4y

CarolynM Pretty much the same way most friends are treated when someone falls in love. If the relationship had been a good, lasting one she would have moved into a more balanced way of dividing her time the way most of us do. But she never got a chance to get past that first infatuation and unfortunately he wasn't worth it. 5y

I always enjoy Maeve Binchy books, but this wouldn‘t be my favourite because in the main it was a collection of stories about the different people staying for a week‘s holiday in Western Ireland. I prefer stories to have more depth & prefer her bigger story books she writes as a result. If you like short stories I definitely recommend this as it was very well written & it had a good group of characters, as well as a good backdrop and context.

Kaye I agree about the Binchy books. I‘ve liked all that I‘ve read but not quite as enthused with this short story/ character type. Like Evening Class, Lilac Bus. I liked her longer ones much better. 5y

Kaye Binchy books are all good, but different levels of good. I usually really like the biggest ones the most. I haven‘t read this one yet. Most of the skinniest ones are good enough to keep reading, but too much like short stories to me. Either too many characters or they‘re not developed enough (edited) 5y

EadieB The Walls just seemed like complainers to me. Then when they found out the first prize was a rip-off then they calmed down. 5y

CarolynM I didn't like them much, either. They were very self absorbed. I thought it was a bit unbelievable that they were so convinced they were going to win first prize. Even if they won a lot of competitions there must have been plenty they didn't win too. 5y

EadieB His mother told him that he will inherit his father‘s business and he needs to stay in contact with his father but I think he needs to figure out a way to spend more time with Erika too. I think he has a choice and can inherit the business and keep Erika too! (edited) 5y

Andrew65 @EadieB She was right to some extent he did choose to go back and go into the company but he had been brainwashed in this over a number of years. That wasn‘t the right place for him. Whether he is making the right choice or not following his time in Ireland only time will tell. Strange he didn‘t end up going to Gothenburg 5y

CarolynM Within the limits of what is available to us, we all have choice about the life we live. I understand that there were strong parental expectations, but I completely agree with Erika that it was Anders's choice to go along with those expectations or to make his own way in the world. 5y

CarolynM I liked that John Paul and his father simply misunderstood each others' desires. I think that happens quite often between parents and children, but I don't think that was Anders's situation. I think his father was going to be very unhappy with him. But Klara was much better suited to be running the business. 5y

TheBookHippie There's always a choice . As long as you have courage. It's hard for kids and parents when the relationship is strained and full of expectations. 5y

Tove_Reads Well, his mother choice another life, and seemed happy. His father didn‘t seem to find it too weird. Expectations are always there, but in this case Zander‘s would never be happy. An irish bar sounds more like him! 5y

EadieB To me Anders father seemed very negative to Anders and he seemed a bit old fashioned too! 5y

Andrew65 @EadieB Far too formal and old fashioned for both Anders and his mother. I wonder if he ever let himself go. He just seems a blank canvas to Anders unless talking about the business. Anders definitely had to break out, I wonder what will happen between him and Erica. 5y

CarolynM He wasn't someone I would want to know, but I think he was pretty satisfied with his life being dominated by his work. The only thing he seemed unhappy about was Anders not being there every evening to tell him what had happened at the firm every day. 5y

Tove_Reads I think they found the answer they were looking for here. They kept on thinking about how unhappy they were. First world problems. But, helping him out made all the difference. 5y

JacqMac I think it‘s the perfect move for them. And by helping Shay the little town already loved and trusts them. That‘s hard to earn in a small town. 5y

CarolynM I suspect that they are going to feel inadequate wherever they are. It is important to care about the people around us, but we also have to be conscious that we don't always get things right and we can't always prevent bad things from happening. I think that's what they struggle with. 5y

Tove_Reads I understand why they did what they did. She probably would have ended up doing the murder suicide anyway. She just couldn‘t cope with it alone. Good thing nothing happen on board, because that would have been a tragedy for all. 5y

JacqMac I think they did the right thing. And they shouldn‘t feel bad about it. They gave them a lovely vacation. And cared for them as best they could. 5y

TheBookHippie They did the humane thing. Sometimes although that's difficult it's the only thing to do. I think it was right. 5y

CarolynM I understood their feelings of responsibility in relation to the deaths at the hospital, but not so much in relation to this incident. Reporting the situation would not have prevented what happened. If they felt they should have recognised the signs that the daughter was planning to do it, that wasn't made clear at all. 5y

Tove_Reads They all seem to be stuck. Unhappy, even though everyone else think they have such fabulous lives. He‘s made many selfish mistakes, but at least he‘s thinking about it now. 5y

EadieB @Andrew65 The fact that Winnie and Lillian were trapped and spent the time singing songs brought them closer together and I think they will get along in the future too. 5y

CarolynM They let go of their public facades and became more honest with each other. Also, they were forced to think about what was really important. I think they've got more chance of getting along in future, but there will probably always be some level of competition between them. (edited) 5y

JacqMac Their true selves came out a bit. I think it allowed Lillian to see how strong Winnie can be. That she might not be a bad choice for a wife. 5y

Tove_Reads Lilian sort of lost her face, became soft for a second and admitted she is too afraid to lose her son. Definitely better between them now, but L is and will be an overprotective mother. 5y

EadieB She seems to be very depressed over her son‘s past behavior but he‘s in a better position now so I think she needs to try to put the past behind. 5y

TheBookHippie It's hard to say for another person. I think you can step back yourself-self preservation or deal with your disappointed self- but to your child you need to appear always available and they always need to feel your unconditional love. I'd write . No matter what. 5y

JacqMac I think she feels very guilty. But I wish she could see she‘s hurting him more by staying away. The past is the past. 5y

CarolynM I think the implication is that she is suffering from depression so I don't think it's fair to be judgemental about her actions. I was glad that she seemed to have been convinced to get help at the end of the chapter. 5y

Andrew65 Always so sad when they can‘t tell their family. They need family around them at a time like that, for a support network if not anything else. 5y

TheBookHippie Not sure -this is difficult for me to say--my experiences: I mentored young moms as a doula 28 years ages 12-24 --now I just go to the center once a month . The parents and families on the whole are awful and quite often a stumbling block. It's usually easier to get a plan and be certain and then inform family and be strong enough to take the results. 5y

JacqMac I‘m with @TheBookHippie on this one. Sometimes families aren‘t very supportive. We had to cut my in-laws out of our family. Their Christian selves don‘t like that we have a gay kid. And I refuse to let them be part of our lives, if they won‘t support him. 5y

JamieArc Binchy was one of the first adult authors I started reading when I was young and loved them. This was my first Binchy book in years and it takes me back. I love it as much as I did her other books when I was young. Loving the setting and the characters and am flying through it! 5y

EadieB She was stupid to go to the US with someone she just met. She should have went right back home when he left her and just said she made a mistake. Then to lie and say he was killed just makes things even worse. Bad no matter how you look at this. 5y

JamieArc I think it was pretty clear that Walter wasn‘t in it for the long haul. Her decisions really annoyed me and made me think I wasn‘t going to like this book, so it was nice to see the person she comes to be back in Ireland. I‘m curious if/when/who will finally find out the truth. 5y

amiekreger I don‘t think it was very smart of her to leave Ireland with someone she just met. She was caught up with the idea of a fairytale though. I did not have a good feeling about Walter. I thought no way is this going to last. You just know that her lying about his death is not going to end well. As with all lies. 5y

TheBookHippie Whelp I'm glad she left she learned a ton and found self reliance and self worth she's owned by no man and lives her own life. I think the Walter thing will haunt her eventually however it got her freedom from a life of doom. 5y

JacqMac Hmmm, well, Walter was obviously a loser. But I don‘t think leaving Ireland was a mistake. She ended up doing quite well for herself. I do think lying to her family about him being dead, isn‘t the best decision though. That‘s eventually going to come out. 5y

Andrew65 I felt it was more stupid to lie to her family about being married and her husband having been killed. I had no problem with her going to the US with him but clear in the end he didn‘t do commitments. CarolynM Playing catch up now I've had a chance to read the first few chapters. I was happy with Chicky's decisions. It's not as though she was giving up great opportunities at home and she obviously had the personality to make the most of whatever situation she found herself in. I'm a firm believer in people making their own life choices and have no time for parents trying to direct their adult children's lives. 5y

Tove_Reads I think she got to be herself by leaving. The old Irish family expectations would not have given her much room. It was probably an easier way to just tell them that about Walter. 5y
