Not a bad read! Pretty basic YA fantasy, but that‘s not bad if that genre is your jam. I liked the magic entities and magic users scattered throughout the world, and the flow of action kept things interesting. I‘m also always glad to see BIPOC main characters and strong female characters. Didn‘t like how significant things quickly lost significance for one or another reason. Content warnings for misogyny, abuse, torture, & others. #Fantasy #Magic

#2022Book50
The best pitch I have for this book is “if Aladdin was set in the Wild West,” or “if a cowboy western was set in the Middle East.” I loved the inclusion of the various legends, and I liked that the romance didn‘t feel forced.

Decided to try this one after my sister recommended it. So glad I did! A fun trip through a world of fantasy, hot deserts and magical legends. The world building was a little complex, but I enjoyed it and the character development was solid. I‘ll definitely be checking out the next one from my library. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Amani has been working towards reaching a life outside of arranged marriages and a lower status as a girl. When she finally thinks she gets the chance to get out by disguising herself as a man in a shooting contest, she finds herself on a journey that‘ll take her all across the desert right outside her door. Filled with ghoul encounters, middle eastern myths, and more, Amani realizes that there‘s truth behind many of the stories.

At first it was slow, not a lot of action, and nothing really happening. Then about 1/3 into it, the pace picked up and it got so much better. The story is a bit confusing, and the world building was amazing, just at times there is a lot of info dump. The characters were really cool, and the romance was such a good slow burn swoon worthy one!
Definitely recommend, and I think I'll read the others, but not just yet.

I listened to this on audio, and the narration is fantastic! I really liked the story, and Amani and Jin were both strong characters. There was lots of adventure and twists, and Hamilton's writing is wonderful. I probably won't continue with the series (at least for now), but only because I'm in the middle of a million others. I've felt that way about a few 1st in series books, so I think it's my anxiety that's stopping me from diving in.

I loved this story. I mean it is your basic girl from small town goes on adventure that leads to her helping a rebellion and learning there something special about her.
It was done so well though. I liked the main heroine, she was spunky and fun, and I loved having it set in the desert with middle eastern mythology. Now I have to get my hands on the next books books.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I had jury duty today, which basically was just me sitting in the basement of our courthouse with so many people & reading this book for 5 hours before being released to go home. And this was the perfect book for a day like today! It was fun & engaging and in a setting I‘m not used to at all, which kept me interested as I learned how this new world works. Definitely looking forward to book 2!

It definitely got more and more exciting as I got further into the story. I can‘t wait to see what happens in the next book. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A fictional world with an orphaned protagonist who takes matters into her own hands. In this world, not unlike our own, she would be married off young and left without a voice because she's a girl. But she finds a way out and finds refuge with other misfits, learning just how much power she actually has. I couldn't put this one down.
