Serafina and the Twisted Staff
Serafina and the Twisted Staff | Robert Beatty
Serafina's defeat of the Man in the Black Cloak has brought her out of the shadows and into the daylight realm of her home, Biltmore Estate. Every night she visits her mother in the forest, eager to learn the ways of the catamount. But Serafina finds herself caught between her two worlds: she's too wild for Biltmore's beautifully dressed ladies and formal customs, and too human to fully join her kin. Late one night, Serafina encounters a strange and terrifying figure in the forest, and is attacked by the vicious wolfhounds that seem to be under his control. Even worse, she's convinced that the stranger was not alone, that he has sent his accomplice into Biltmore in disguise. Someone is wreaking havoc at the estate. A mysterious series of attacks test Serafina's role as Biltmore's protector, culminating in a tragedy that tears Serafina's best friend and only ally, Braeden Vanderbilt, from her side. Heartbroken, she flees. Deep in the forest, Serafina comes face-to-face with the evil infecting Biltmoreand discovers its reach is far greater than she'd ever imagined. All the humans and creatures of the Blue Ridge Mountains are in terrible danger. For Serafina to defeat this new evil before it engulfs her beloved home, she must search deep inside herself and embrace the destiny that has always awaited her.

Took me awhile to think of a #blackcat book. I‘ve read the first 3 Serafina books, partly because they‘re set at the Biltmore. This is a great middle grade series but can be a little scary at times, depending on the kid (and adult 😬). Serafina can become a panther and guards the Biltmore with help from her friends.

Serafina and Braeden are back for another supernatural adventure at the Biltmore Estate. Starts slowly. Beatty should see how Rowling referred to what happened in the previous HP books. Anyway, someone wants to destroy the Biltmore and seems to be able to control or possess animals. All animals in the forest surrounding Biltmore are fleeing, even Serafina's family. Serafina, who is not completely at home in either place, decides to save Biltmore.

Listened to this on my way back from dropping my son off at my SIL for fencing camp. First couple of chapters were just restating what happened in book one. Seems like it's finally getting to the story in this book.

Littens, please help me decide what to read next in my TBR pile. Please note your choice and I will look in the morning to see what book has been picked the most times. Thanks for your help! 👍🏻😃

Isadora has settled in for the afternoon. Unfortunately, she's laying very awkwardly on what I want to read! You can't tell, but her neck is bent all funny so she can lay her head directly on the book! #catsoflitsy

Question. I haven't read the first book (It's been on hold at my library for what seems like years), but the second one doesn't have a wait list. Can I read this out of order and it still make sense?

My only #signed book. Given to me at Christmas by my bookish niece and sister in law that live near Asheville. We all enjoyed the first Serafina book set at the Biltmore, and they said I needed the next one! It's in my pile for when I need some adventure.

BkClubCare Bold is supposed to be my "word" this year. Thx for reminder. 3y

This book was so wonderful and fantastic!! I loved the first book in this series, but this second book took the baton and never stopped running! I did not want to ever stop reading! Also, look at that cover!!😍

Bette I read the first one and liked it too. Thanks for the recommendation, I'll put a hold on it now. 👍❤️️😊 3y

Great continuation of the story. Beatty mixes in real people and places with folklore to create a hard-to-put-down story. With a strong female protagonist who learns the value of family and friends this is a good choice for middle school readers. It can be a bit dark and there are animal injuries/deaths/attacks in both books so this may be a series a parent may want to check out first for more sensitive readers.

This book is breaking my heart! So much had happened and I'm only half-way through. There's some serious stuff happening for a book geared toward younger readers. I love that there's not sense of talking down to the reader. Stay bold, indeed.

RanaElizabeth Oh! I loved the first book, didn't know there was a sequel! 3y

I feel this line really sums up how a lot people feel right now. When I read it I thought immediately of John Lewis and then all the other courageous people who have stood up for themselves and others. And then I thought about how many of us will be defined by the fights we chose in the coming years. #ReadersResist

monkeygirlsmama Both the books in this series were wonderfully conceptualized and written. I loved them both when I reviewed them. 3y

In order to meet my Goodreads Challenge goal I need to read 4 books a week. My last book club choice has me a little behind. Also, I'm annoyed that the last book I read doesn't have more of the aeries available so I can binge read it. I'm going away from my various challenge lists and reading this one. I enjoyed the first one. There's a lot of poetry in the writing and the addition of folklore is awesome!

monkeygirlsmama It's a great book. 3y

I'm really enjoying this series so far! I like how it pulls in folk lore of the Americas, and the darkness of it. It's rare to find that in middle grade. If you enjoyed the first book, then I don't think you'll be disappointed with this one. Serafina grows up a little more and discovers what it means to fit in, and I think she's gotten fiercer since the first story. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

About 140 pages left! This series has been a lot of fun, and would be great for the weeks leading to Halloween. It's not overly scary but it's certainly creepy.

Should be asleep...but I couldn't resist reading a few pages before I pass out from exhaustion. This one has to go back to the library later today, so I have about 10 or so hours of non-sleep time to get it done.
I enjoyed the first one quite a bit and I'm excited to see what Serafina has to face in this one.

stargazerblue49 You'll have to let me know how you like it! I read the first one and for the most part enjoyed it, but not sure I want to continue the series yet. 3y

August #bookhaul. Horrible picture, but I took it quickly in my classroom this evening. Most of the books will be going into my classroom library. I am excited for Serafina and the Twisted Staff! I read the first, Serafina and the Black Cloak, this summer. It is a fun mystery/historical fiction. #augustphotochallenge @TheSpinecrackersBookClub

brendanmleonard Good luck with the start of class! Hope your students love the books! 3y
tjwill @brendanmleonard Thanks! We have actually already been in school for three weeks! I have quite a few readers in my classes, and plenty of my books get borrowed every year. I think they appreciate having a teacher who knows a lot about the books they like to read too. 3y

Serafina is an interesting heroine, a young girl who just recently learned amazing things about her own heritage and abilities. At the beginning of the story she doesn't quite know where she fits in the world, and I loved seeing her continue to grow as a character in this action packed story.

Beatty's first Serafina book was one of my faves in 2015, so am looking forward to diving into this new adventure! This one begins on the Biltmore estate, 3 weeks after Serafina defeated the Man in the Black Cloak.
