A debut novel that pulses with humor and empathy and explores the heart's capacity for forgiveness... Zadie Anson and Emma Colley have been best friends since their early twenties, when they first began navigating serious romantic relationships amid the intensity of medical school. Now they're happily married wives and mothers with successful careers--Zadie as a pediatric cardiologist and Emma as a trauma surgeon. Their lives in Charlotte, North Carolina are chaotic but fulfilling, until the return of a former colleague unearths a secret one of them has been harboring for years. As chief resident, Nick Xenokostas was the center of Zadie's life--both professionally and personally--throughout a tragic chain of events in her third year of medical school that she has long since put behind her. Nick's unexpected reappearance during a time of new professional crisis shocks both women into a deeper look at the difficult choices they made at the beginning of their careers. As it becomes evident that Emma must have known more than she revealed about circumstances that nearly derailed both their lives, Zadie starts to question everything she thought she knew about her closest friend.

This is a story about a group of med students (set in Ky), the events of their 3rd year, and their present-day lives (set in Charlotte, NC). The setting mirrors Martin‘s life. The story reminded me at times of Grey‘s Anatomy-not a bad thing since I was obsessed with GA for the first seasons. The story is somewhat predictable & the characters could have had more depth, but overall, this is great #debut novel. #readwithmrbook. Also, ❤️ the cover.

I decided to borrow the tagged book from my mom. She got it last year but will probably never read it. She always has some excuse to not sit down and read (she‘s too busy, needs to clean, etc). She also gave me A World Lost, one of the first Wendell Berry books I read. It‘s signed to my grandfather; mom had gotten it for him in 1997, so she passed it on to me.

Martin's debut is a medical drama that's a study in the complexities of relationships. She explores the sometimes delicate and obligatory aspect of a long-term relationship, especially those that are forged by women. Sometimes these relationships are tolerated, not unlike marriages, not only because of the time put in, but because of the shared secrets. A solid debut. If you are a fan of Grey's Anatomy, I highly encourage you to pick up this book.

A soapy summer read that kept me entertained if a little exasperated. I wish she hadn‘t taken a cue from Liane Moriarty with the whole “I‘ll wait until 80% in to tell you what happened” because it cheapens things. Not to mention you saw it coming from a mile away. But it was a fun little diversion. 3.5🌟

If you love medical dramas, like ER, you‘ll adore this book. Zadie and Emma are interns in Louisville Kentucky (yay for my home!) and encounter the long hours and complicated relationships that go along with it. We switch up between 1999 during their intern years to present day Charlotte NC where they are now employed doctors with husbands and families. This was a page turner and the character development of Zadie and Emma is fantastic.

I wanted to love this. Medical Dramas are my favorite type of tv. But I have so many mixed feelings. I narration felt off (switching from past to present and switch between Emma and Zadie). I would of enjoyed it more without Emma‘s narration and smoother time transitions. The mystery was really obvious and describing everyone‘s beauty was cringe worthy. But it kept me engaged enough to continue. 🤷‍♀️

I want to support local authors, so it pains me to give a big 👎🏽 to this one, but I cannot support the subtle racism and weird stereotypes that popped up in this book.

One example: writing like this for a black woman who works in the healthcare field: “Now how you reckon I‘m gon‘ know something like that Dr. Colley? He just say he got something he need to discuss with you.”

Plus, the Grey‘s anatomy exaggerated drama was just way overdone.

alisiakae I am counting this for #popsugar2018 #localauthor 6y
vkois88 That's a shame, it's got such a pretty cover. Sorry it was disappointing 6y
alisiakae @vkois88 It would be different if she wrote some of the white, Southern women using a southern dialect, but she didn‘t. Hopefully she thinks about having a sensitivity reader for her next book. 6y
See All 13 Comments
ravenlee Wow, does she ever say she don't know nothing 'bout birthin' babies? That's awful. 6y
alisiakae @ravenlee There is also a PoC ER patient that comes in for a “weave problem”, and the only Latinx character is an ER shooting victim who is referred to as being in MS-13. 🙄 6y
ravenlee 😲🙄 6y
vkois88 At this point, Idk what's worse... that she wrote it all that way, or that someone published it 😑 6y
Erinreadsthebooks Yessssss😩. I really wanted to like the book since it's set in Charlotte (I'm thirty minutes outside of Charlotte), the author was a doctor and should have a good grasp on the medical field, the premise sounded like it was right up my alley, but I really hated the book. 6y
MallenNC I just read this too, and I definitely was turned off by the stereotyping. I liked the Grey's Anatomy story, but I was very disappointed in that aspect. (edited) 6y
alisiakae @Erinreadsthebooks I read a few sections to my hubby (he is a general surgeon in Charlotte), and he just shook his head. He thought she definitely has a firm basis in medicine, but the exaggeration was silly. He also thought she used a lot of fancy medical terms that aren‘t even used in the field very often! (Like Wirsung duct). FYI - I live in Huntersville, 20 minutes from uptown. 😃 6y
alisiakae @MallenNC take out the stereotyping, and it‘s not a terrible book, esp. for people who love Grey‘s Anatomy. I am not one of those people. 😂 (although Shonda Rimes did win me over with Scandal, lol). 6y
Erinreadsthebooks @4thhouseontheleft Oh, yes, the medical terminology. I didn't need her to show her medical knowledge. I felt pretty confident that she would be well-versed in that considering the whole 'being a doctor' part--no proof necessary. It's a small Litsy world--I'm in Mooresville! 6y

It is so weird reading a book that is set in a place I know so well - the hospital and medical community in Charlotte.

Especially, when I read a paragraph like this, which seems like a indirect jab at the surgical practice where my husband is one of the partners (the author is using fictionalized names). His practice is the largest surgical group in Charlotte, and has been negotiating with the hospital over these exact issues in recent years. 😵

Chrissyreadit That‘s interesting! Maybe it happens more than people realize. 6y
alisiakae @Chrissyreadit The author is using a lot of real locations and places, so I found this interesting. This is similar to what the local hospital system has been attempting lately, and my husband‘s practice is the primary surgical group in the city. He read this and was like, hmmmm she really seems to be referring to us! 😂😂 6y
Slajaunie @4thhouseontheleft That is very interesting. I always like to read books that are set in my area or near me. It is funny how closely this one is related to your life. 6y

Starting this one with the hope of finishing before the neighborhood book club tomorrow!

It‘s set in my current hometown, Charlotte, NC. The author is a local doctor, and one of the characters is a surgeon - in the same hospital system where my husband works as a surgeon - so I had to read this new release! I am guessing I will either love it or hate it completely. 😂

Hopefully it won‘t be a Grey‘s Anatomy style of book. 🤣

This was super fun. I‘ve heard various people compare it to “Grey‘s Anatomy in book form” and of course I knew I had to read it - I‘m a sucker for a good medical drama. I loved that it was partially set in Charlotte, NC (where I live). The story follows two women physicians who are best friends and had gone to medical school together. It goes back and forth between the present and their past years in medical school as it reveals secrets. Loved it.
