Highland Fling | Nancy Mitford

Pickpick

As I discovered from my reading list in 2021, I enjoy modern classics written by women so decided to read this first novel of Nancy Mitford. Like much of her work it is a satire of her own “set” and family. Clearly a first novel but still a good eye for characterization and for skewering pretensions- here the gentry, old peers, bright young things, those of artistic sentiment and couples who are “poor but blissful”. Only 3⭐️ from me but a fun read

LeahBergen I still have this Mitford to read. 😊 4mo

This is Chris Whitaker ‘s (We Begin at the End) debut novel. Billed as a crime novel, this is really more about several people whose lives intersect when three-year-old Harry is abducted from his bedroom in the middle of the night. I liked Tall Oakes; I LOVED We Begin at the End. Still, this book was often quite funny, and the characters are all interesting. Easy to turn the pages. Thanks again for the gift, @BarbaraBB ❤️

BarbaraBB It probably couldn‘t be as good as We Begin at the End but I am glad you had a good time with it! 🤍 9mo

A quick read that felt a bit like a fever dream. The story idea was fun and entertaining, but execution was a bit cringy. Layered with pop culture references and I didn‘t catch them all. But without reading a synopsis and just walking into it knowing it‘s a comedy, I had a few laughs.

3.5/5 ⭐️

I love getting unexpected #BookMail, and enjoy it even more when it is a debut novel with themes of love, grief, and questions of "what if?". Thank you to Wednesday Books for sending me this finished copy of #WhereItAllLands by Jennie Wexler.⁣

Mehso-so

So-so because I was a bit bored for a good chunk of it. It's slow, which I have come to expect with literary fiction. But the premise is interesting and unusual so I stuck with it.
Eventually I did get to a point where I couldn't put it down. I wanted to get to know Elena much more. I felt there wasn't enough of her. But that turned out to be appropriate, and the last line was just beautiful.
