Children of Earth and Sky
Children of Earth and Sky | Guy Gavriel Kay
The bestselling author of the ground breaking novels Under Heaven and River of Stars, Guy Gavriel Kay is back with a new novel, Children of Earth and Sky, set in a world inspired by the conflicts and dramas of Renaissance Europe. Against this tumultuous backdrop the lives of men and women unfold on the borderlands--where empires and faiths collide. From the small coastal town of Senjan, notorious for its pirates, a young woman sets out to find vengeance for her lost family. That same spring, from the wealthy city-state of Seressa, famous for its canals and lagoon, come two very different people: a young artist traveling to the dangerous east to paint the grand khalif at his request--and possibly to do more--and a fiercely intelligent, angry woman, posing as a doctor's wife, but sent by Seressa as a spy. The trading ship that carries them is commanded by the accomplished younger son of a merchant family, ambivalent about the life he's been born to live. And farther east a boy trains to become a soldier in the elite infantry of the khalif--to win glory in the war everyone knows is coming. As these lives entwine, their fates--and those of many others--will hang in the balance, when the khalif sends out his massive army to take the great fortress that is the gateway to the western world...

xicanti @Bianca it was one of my top books of 2016! I started rereading it a couple weeks back, but I wasn‘t in quite the right headspace. Now I don‘t want to put it down. 3y

It was a fairly busy weekend. I didn't quite finish the book, but I made it to 60%, which I'll count as a win for the #20in4 readathon. Thanks for hosting @Andrew65 !

Andrew65 Well done 👏👏👏🥳🍾🥂 3y
Weisubei Is it any good? I consider buying it 😁😁 3y

I'm jumping into this a little late (still Friday). This week hasn't been a great reading week; I've only read one book and it was disappointing.

Allergies are kind of kicking my butt today. I do have plans for tonight (movie) and possibly Sunday and have to replace my car battery this weekend, but I'll make time for reading the tagged book.

#20in4 @Andrew65

Andrew65 Good luck, hope this helps and the allergy situation improves. 3y

Guy Gavriel Kay is one of my favourite authors, and this book is a great example of his particular blend of fantasy and historical fiction (although you'll get even more out of it if you've read his two book Sarantine Mosaic first). I'm tempted to read it again while I wait for his new novel to come out in May.

This is three pages long and its only a partial list? 😱
I'm looking forward to this !

Jabberwocky I JUST FINISHED THIS AND IM HAVING ALL OF THE EMOTIONS STILL. I'm literally so book hung over that I don't even want to take my bookmark out. So excited for you!!! Have you read his other books? 6y
autumnlupin @Jaberwocky that sounds like good news to me!!! Yes I read Tigana and it blew me away! I don't know why it took me so long to read any of his books!! 6y
Jabberwocky @autumnlupin so good!! I loved Tigana! I would strongly strongly recommend this one next! He has lots of histories based on the same sort of premise- Jaddites Asharites and Kindath. I love finding the parallels between his take and real history! 6y

What an amazing story. Kay's novels are always historical fiction with 'a quarter turn to the fantastic' in his words and this was a wonderful ride. Set 25 years after the fall of Constantinople- or Sarantium as he dubs it, the novel follows an amazingly human cast through Italy, Turkey and everything in between as they search for art, love and home. #screwyoucharacterlimit

Not a bad read at all - as long as you're already a fan of GGK's work. Weak spots - like the characterization, slow plot, and worldbuilding - can get in the way, but the writing can also make up for all that, kind of. If you haven't read any of GGK's work, it might be a better idea to set this aside and pick up Lions of Al-Rassan instead; that's definitely a much stronger work than this one.
