The Prince and the Dressmaker
The Prince and the Dressmaker | Jen Wang
Paris, at the dawn of the modern age: Prince Sebastian is looking for a bride—or rather, his parents are looking for one for him. Sebastian is too busy hiding his secret life from everyone. At night he puts on daring dresses and takes Paris by storm as the fabulous Lady Crystallia—the hottest fashion icon in the world capital of fashion! Sebastian’s secret weapon (and best friend) is the brilliant dressmaker Frances—one of only two people who know the truth: sometimes this boy wears dresses. But Frances dreams of greatness, and being someone’s secret weapon means being a secret. Forever. How long can Frances defer her dreams to protect a friend? Jen Wang weaves an exuberantly romantic tale of identity, young love, art, and family. A fairy tale for any age, The Prince and the Dressmaker will steal your heart.

When there is a sale at Office Depot there is even more of an excuse to stock up on new pens and sticky notes for the next round of #lmpbc It doesn‘t help when your graphic novels for #GroupU arrive as well. Choosing is going to be tough, but maybe not as tough as waiting! #graphicnovels #tbr

LibrarianRyan I know. and now I will have to go to office depot. 1mo
Shakespearience @LibrarianRyan I should clarify that it wasn‘t like a store-wide sale so much as these items were conveniently on sale. 1mo

Book 4 of Asian readathon-read a book in different format. I'll not do last challenge because I don't have the group reading book. This is the story of a prince who likes to wear dresses. I will not say more to not spoil the story. So cute!😍it is a story of friendship, respect, love, just to be yourself, to be honest, genuine, about support! I don't know how to rate graphic novels. The illustrations are cute. The story is lovely 3.7⭐️?

This was wonderful! Such a sweet story with some pleasant surprises. Frances is a seamstress who receives a mysterious job offer. She quickly discovers she‘ll be designing dresses for Prince Sebastian. Together they transform him into Lady Crystallia, fashion icon.

Clwojick I just got this from the library for next week of #MayMadness! I can‘t wait to spend the week reading graphics ♥️♥️ 2mo

Interesting graphic novel about a prince that feels more like himself when wearing women‘s clothes. The dressmaker knows the prince‘s secret and creates fantastical dresses for him to wear- hoping to achieve her dreams of becoming a fashion designer. I think this book is meant for kids/teens as I found the plot a bit simplistic and I didn‘t love the art. But it is a good story overall and I think kids would enjoy it.

TracyReadsBooks Definitely meant for kids—we have this in the library and it‘s very popular with students. 3mo

A bit of a meh for me. I liked the artwork in this, although I would have preferred more dialogue. Even in my comics, I like the storyline to progress somewhat through conversation.

I've heard this book described as progressive. I wouldn't call it that at all. I'm not sure if my thoughts on this are spoilers so I'll mark them as such in the comments. But I was underwhelmed.

Sarz The prince wears women's clothes. Everyone finds out and turns on him, except the dressmaker who loves him for who he is. Boring! Aren't we done with that? Wouldn't it have been better for the big reveal to be that no one cared and just accepted him? That his fear was unfounded? There was such an opportunity here to normalise behaviour like this (by which I also mean other LGBTQI+ behaviour as well) and it was written like always. Disappointed. 5mo
greenhairdontcare @Sarz I haven‘t read this, but I agree. It doesn‘t sound as progressive as it‘s made out to be. (edited) 5mo

This graphic novel was SO CUTE 😍😍😍 Prince Sebastian hires a personal seamstress, Frances, to help him hide his secret - that he likes to wear dresses. It‘s a fast read that was heartwarming and had really charming art, I definitely recommend!

Incredibly quick read, and likely my first graphic novel ever. The story is sweet enough, but it is overly simplistic without any real character development or depth of story. The illustrations are nice, but the story is so basic that it‘s a tad underwhelming. 🤴👗🧵

While this is definitely a pick because it is every bit as lovely and charming as everyone says it is, it also reinforced the fact that graphic novels just aren‘t for me. Glad I read outside out of my comfort zone even if I kept thinking how much I would prefer this story in a different format.

Siannalyn Graphic novels aren't my favorite, too, bit sometimes I really love them, especially when they are cute and sweet ☺️ and I'm glad you enjoyed this one! I hope to reat it on January and I am looking forwardnto do it! 7mo

This book is easily my favorite so far. It is about a gender fluid boy who is also a drag queen.
An technically the seamstresses fell in love with the prince not for his charms but his personality so she could be considered pan.
Representation for the win!

This was adorable! A perfect light and fluffy graphic novel to beat away the winter chill. The resolution had me grinning and I loved the art style. I could totally see this being animated at some point but I‘m not sure the current social and political climate is ready for that. But I would love to see it one day! If you‘re looking for something quick and cheery to round out 2018 I would give this a go.

Well this was just delightful and adorable. An aspiring fashion designer Frances is hired by a prince named Sebastian to be a royal seamstress, but all is not what it seems. The prince, it turns out, sometimes also feels like a princess and wants Frances to design scandalous and inventive dresses. The 2 teens discover who they are and fall in love along the way. Also: any story about parents accepting their queer kid makes me teary. Loved it!
