Prince and the Dressmaker
Prince and the Dressmaker | Jen Wang
Paris, at the dawn of the modern age: Prince Sebastian is looking for a bride--or rather, his parents are looking for one for him. Sebastian is too busy hiding his secret life from everyone. At night he puts on daring dresses and takes Paris by storm as the fabulous Lady Crystallia--the hottest fashion icon in the world capital of fashion!Sebastian's secret weapon (and best friend) is the brilliant dressmaker Frances--one of only two people who know the truth: sometimes this boy wears dresses. But Frances dreams of greatness, and being someone's secret weapon means being a secret. Forever. How long can Frances defer her dreams to protect a friend? Jen Wang weaves an exuberantly romantic tale of identity, young love, art, and family. A fairy tale for any age, The Prince and the Dressmaker will steal your heart. This title has Common Core connections.

#NewYearWhoDis Book 5

This is totally not my genre or format, but I found this to be sweet and enjoyable! Even with my cold black heart 😅 I read it on my iPad which helped me keep track of how the panels are to be read (I know that sounds dumb...)

It‘s a story about identity and friendship and it was the perfect thing to give me the warm fuzzies...especially after my last book about the Donner Party. Thanks Frances and Sebastian! 👑🧶👗

monalyisha Ha! Great write-up. 🙌🏻 3w

This book first hit my radar when Amanda Palmer posted mentioned it in one of her posts. I finally had the chance to read it, and it's fabulous! Loved everything about it - the art, the story, the message. Definitely recommend!

LiteraryinLititz I recommend her new book Stargazers as well! 1mo

I read this graphic novel really quickly. This was an amazing and hilarious graphic novel. It really made me want to read more graphic novels like this. I really liked how everyone in the end accepted prince sebastian for who he was and he was able to be his true self. This story was relatable as well.

This book is now returning to me, after lending it to my sister, on my last visit over the Halloween season. 😅 She enjoyed the comical story, and insights on any general gender questions - about the love and worthwhile values of costume collecting. I recommend this as the best on drag fashion, and hearty life experiences. 👑💖

@Ijuliel Q. what's the diff bt comics, manga, anime, graphic novels, etc

4/6: Then we get into graphic novels and things get muddy. gns are also comics but i see them as borrowing from both styles. they are usually formatted like comics but start to look like the animanga style. i also read that gns tell a story in one volume but so do manga. and that comics tell it in volumes but so do manga. these are also usually in color and read L to R

LibrarianRyan You had great explanations. I think the only thing I might add is that Graphic novels are similar to comics but allow for a longer story. And/or they compile volumes of comics into one bigger collection. Usually 3-4 comics per graphic novel. 4mo
Crimson613 @LibrarianRyan thanks 🙂 oh yeah! comics are usually very short but graphic novels are probably the longest of the group. Manga now comes out in omnibus editions tho which I know a lot of people like 4mo
LibrarianRyan @Crimson613 I think for me I only like Manga omnibus editions if they are hard cover. Other wise they fall apart too easy. That being said I have had my eye on a new Death note set all in black with black spayed pages. Tempting!!!! Plus GN are get “book” where the combine the GN in to a book. I like the hard covers but not the price. 4mo
See All 13 Comments
Crimson613 @LibrarianRyan for me omnibus books are iffy. If the series is available by volume I get those and if they don't, I get the omnibus. I haven't seen a lot of hardcover ones, are they more expensive than the paperback? Which are expensive already #rip. oh man I love Death Note! Will you get it? I'd also be tempted if I didn't already have the single volumes 4mo
LibrarianRyan @Crimson613 death not eventually probably. I used to buy manga for my libraries but it was always hard when books in the middle of series would fall apart and you couldn‘t replace the volume. I own so very little manga because it was hard to get in farm country but I always tried to have the most popular at my library. 4mo
ljuliel Wow, such a lot of differences between them ! You did a great job. 4mo
LibrarianRyan Btw do you know @Easytiger @GrilledCheeseSamurai and and and it‘s on the tip of my tongue who also appreciate Gn and anime? @GondorGirl likes Gn and I‘m doing her challenge this year. 4mo
Crimson613 @ljuliel thanks 😆 4mo
Crimson613 @LibrarianRyan Ohhh I don't know too many people so I'm always up for litsy ppl recs, what's the challenge? 4mo
LibrarianRyan @Crimson613 it was simple. Two graphic novels a month. I‘m also oldoing the #litsyAtoZ challenge with all graphic novels. I have a few letters I have to find. I started looking today. 4mo
Crimson613 @LibrarianRyan if they do it again next year I think I'll join, I'm doing #nfnov and a winter reading challenge in December so I'll be too busy to do something else, but I've always been curious about the A to Z challenge 4mo
LibrarianRyan @Crimson613 they are pretty fun. Usually hosted by @BookishMarginalia and @WanderingBookaneer normally you set how you will make your alphabet. I‘m doing picture books and gN 4mo

I almost forgot my #bookreport! I haven‘t finished Drive Your Plow or started The Blue Eye, but I finished the other 3. The tagged book was wonderful and heartwarming. Our Women on the Ground was more mini-memoir than I expected, but still an important nonfiction read for anyone wanting to know more about events in the Middle East. Relish I didn‘t enjoy, but you can‘t win ‘em all. I also finished my audio reread of The Black Khan. 🥰

First time attempting to read a book in another language...any tips?

Sace Only stop to look up words you absolutely need to look up for understanding. 4mo
Lcsmcat I agree with @Sace - try to get as much from context as you can so you‘re not going back and forth from one language to the next. I sometimes use index cards as bookmarks and write down unfamiliar words to look up later rather than stopping the flow of the story. 4mo
Sharpeipup @Sace @Lcsmcat Thank you for that advice! 4mo
AnneCecilie What @Sace said. But also to take your time. The first book I read in a foreign language (English), I think I used close to 30 min on one page. I was probably reading above my language level. 4mo

Today is a good reminder to update one's profile, with the supportive awareness of preferred gender pronouns. I use (they/them) for an androgynous description, while either he or she is okay with me; I get around friendly jokes at the kitchen job. Sometimes what isn't Out, can bring up more asked .. but no worries on having to answer for sure. Be safe and authentically you!

Interesting graphic novel about a prince that feels more like himself when wearing women‘s clothes. The dressmaker knows the prince‘s secret and creates fantastical dresses for him to wear- hoping to achieve her dreams of becoming a fashion designer. I think this book is meant for kids/teens as I found the plot a bit simplistic and I didn‘t love the art. But it is a good story overall and I think kids would enjoy it.

TracyReadsBooks Definitely meant for kids—we have this in the library and it‘s very popular with students. 10mo

A bit of a meh for me. I liked the artwork in this, although I would have preferred more dialogue. Even in my comics, I like the storyline to progress somewhat through conversation.

I've heard this book described as progressive. I wouldn't call it that at all. I'm not sure if my thoughts on this are spoilers so I'll mark them as such in the comments. But I was underwhelmed.

Sarz The prince wears women's clothes. Everyone finds out and turns on him, except the dressmaker who loves him for who he is. Boring! Aren't we done with that? Wouldn't it have been better for the big reveal to be that no one cared and just accepted him? That his fear was unfounded? There was such an opportunity here to normalise behaviour like this (by which I also mean other LGBTQI+ behaviour as well) and it was written like always. Disappointed. 12mo
greenhairdontcare @Sarz I haven‘t read this, but I agree. It doesn‘t sound as progressive as it‘s made out to be. (edited) 12mo
