A secret chamber. A mysterious shipwreck. A murder in the desolate salt marshes. A seemingly straightforward private case turns out to be much more complicated-and sinister-than Special Agent A.X.L. Pendergast ever could have anticipated. Pendergast, together with his ward Constance Greene, travels to the quaint seaside village of Exmouth, Massachusetts, to investigate the theft of a priceless wine collection. But inside the wine cellar, they find something considerably more disturbing: a bricked-up niche that once held a crumbling skeleton. Pendergast and Constance soon learn that Exmouth is a town with a very dark and troubled history, and this skeleton may be only the first hint of an ancient transgression, kept secret all these years. But they will discover that the sins of the past are still very much alive. Local legend holds that during the 1692 witch trials in Salem, the real witches escaped, fleeing north to Exmouth and settling deep in the surrounding salt marshes, where they continued to practice their wicked arts. Then, a murdered corpse turns up in the marshes. The only clue is a series of mysterious carvings. Could these demonic symbols bear some relation to the ancient witches' colony, long believed to be abandoned? A terrible evil lurks beneath the surface of this sleepy seaside town-one with deep roots in Exmouth's grim history. And it may be that Constance, with her own troubled past, is the only one who truly comprehends the awful danger that she, Pendergast, and the residents of Exmouth must face . . .

Hokey Smokes! This was moving along as a riveting thriller, then about 3/4 way thru it made a hard left turn and became a horror story. I never saw the ending coming and it left so many questions I'll have to read the next book soon. My first book finished for #FabulousFebruary and my #bookspin book for #bookspinbingo

Andrew65 Well done 👏👏👏 Need to get back to these authors. 3y

I did not see that ending coming! This book had two seemingly separate mysteries, that eventually revealed themselves to be tangentially related. Pendergast and Constance deeply underestimate the danger of their latest adventure. There is a lighthouse, stolen wine, missing treasure, a shipwreck, witches, demons, a monster. What is real? What is true? What will happen next? I actually yelled, “NOOOOOO!” at the end of this book. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Book #15 in the Agent Pendergast series. Thus book had a different pace to it. Around the 60% dine mark the initial mystery seemed solved and I wasn‘t sure what to expect. But then there was quite a twist, and it ends on a cliffhanger! I feel like the character of Pendergast has come a long way thru these 15 books and I‘m eager to see what happens a next.

Not my favorite Pendergast book, but not my least favorite either. It was a fast read and most of the books in this series are not.

This one started out really good and got pretty weird and kind of unbelievable at the end. Overall, pretty good thriller though. I still want to read the whole series.

Is it just a bit weird that I have a slight crush on an eccentric fictional person named Aloysoius Pendergast?

My January reading stats. I planned to take it easy this month, but I ended up reading more than usual. 😄I finished my book 📚 last night, so I am starting the month fresh, with no bookish holdover.

This book was great. A return to the Pendergast of old with a nice stand alone mystery. The first 3/4 was awesome. The last part was a little unexpected and went in a whole new direction. It felt almost like two separate stories. I am really looking forward to the next book in the series.

BiblioNyan I've never read a book by Preston & Child, but I've heard plenty of good things. Do you have a recommendation for where a newbie of their work can begin? 7y
ReadingOver50 @Bibli0.Nyan I would start with Relic. And then look up the order of the Pendergast novels. It's best if you read them in order. 7y
Reecaspieces Agent Pendergast is one of my all time favorite characters! 7y

"A glabrous pate"? Who are you trying to impress with your fancy vocabulary? Why not just say "a bald head"?

Reggie U have no idea how many times I think this. The sentence the other day was "his socks were lugubrious around his ankles." SAD!!!!?? His socks were SAD!!!!!!!! On a positive note, I know what lugubrious means now. Lololol 7y

Lake: "I'd try it if I didn't hate licorice. Isn't wormwood supposed to cause brain damage?"
Pendergast: "The act of living causes brain damage."

Alisnazzy Let me tell you. I went to an actual Absinthe bar in Prague and I nearly died from the taste. It's so bad. And I didn't even see any damn fairies other than the ones painted on the ceiling lol 8y

Shemac77 Love Pendergast! And absinthe just seems like a bad idea. 8y
quirkyreader The taste all depends on how strong the wormwood is. You can have a beverage called Chartreuse which is Absinthe without the wormwood. 8y
Arcana The new one is out next month!! Can't wait❤️ 8y

A fair addition to the Pendergast series. However, it's almost like reading two different books. The first two thirds are a murder mystery/thriller. The last third changes to a horror story and a prelude to the next book. I won't spoil anything, but I DO want to see what happens in the next installment.

ReadingOver50 My two favorite authors 😄 8y

D Preston & L Child do not write fast enough... Mr. Pendergast is such a great character. I am sure Gideon is also, I just have not put time to that series yet.
