I saw the classic film first, so my hopes were high. This novel didn‘t disappoint. An insightful look at a family in crisis after the death of one son and the suicide attempt of the other, the POV shifts between the guilt-wracked son and his bewildered father as the frigid mother grapples with her limitations. The characters are finely tuned to the late ‘70s zeitgeist but still familiar as they claw through grief. Powerful and ahead of its time.

Don‘t know why, but this was the first book to film title I thought of. Both book and film were excellent 💜

Remember this movie? I saw the audiobook and picked it up this week. I enjoyed it. A great look into grief, how people react and heal differently.

Saturday night reading! I have been told that Ordinary People was required reading in high school English, however I have never read it. It was our book club pick. I am jazzed to dive in 😊

Bookwm85forever I read it last year. Good book!!! 5y
SleepyDragon I haven't read it, and don't know anyone who had to high school. Looking forward to your review! 5y
Tamra You‘ll have to check the movie afterwards. I recall it being devastating. 5y

“How do you stay open, when nobody mentions anything, when everybody is careful not to mention it?”

“Depending upon the reality one must face, one may prefer to opt for illusion.”

“Grief is ugly. It‘s isolating. It‘s not something to be shared w/others.”

“Without speaking now, without looking at each other, they sit on opposite sides of the small, cosy living room, the silence between them far from empty. It is hostile. Full of unspoken words.”

I saw this movie years ago and decided I should read the book. We all know books are better than the movie.

ValerieAndBooks Same here! Recently read this, and even though it had been years since I saw the movie, it was hard not to picture the actors while reading. 6y

This got bumped to the top of the #TBR pile because I DVR'ed the movie the other day and I really wanna watch it. It's a rule I have -book first, movie second. And it's my letter O pick for #LitsyAtoZ.

ValerieAndBooks It was my Letter G for #LitsyAtoZ 😊. I saw the movie years ago -- both are good -- but it was hard not to picture the characters as I was reading; glad you're doing the book first! 7y

I first read this when I was in High School and it's always good for a nice long cry 😢🤧

Jas16 Ordinary people is my favorite movie because it destroys me every time but I have yet to read the book. 7y
Dragon The book and the movie , Kleenex time! I will never forget Mary Tyler Moore's performance, she was so cold . The opposite of "Mary Richards". 7y

Judith Guest does a good job of portraying a teenager, Conrad, as he deals with repercussions after the death of his brother. Also, how his mother and father each react in different ways from Conrad. The movie with Timothy Hutton as Conrad (and Mary Tyler Moore as his mother) is close to the book, as I recall. If you haven't read/seen either, read book 1st b/c otherwise it's hard not to picture the movie characters. #litsyAtoZ #birthdaychallenge

Not much reading or Litsying these past few days. I've been working in the yard (loving this spring weather!) and soon packing for our spring break trip. Taking a break with Ordinary People. I like it but it's hard not to picture the movie characters while reading. Hope to finish by tonight; need to decide what books to pack!! (PS the trees aren't lopsided, it's the angle of the camera!)

Mdargusch Great reading spot. I just read the Vacationers while on vacation and I recommend it. 7y
LauraBeth Deciding which books to pack 💕😀 7y

Killing two birds with one stone for my reading challenges. This is both letter G for #LitsyAtoZ and year 1976 of my #birthdaychallenge . Saw the movie many years ago but not when it first came out (more like ~ ten years after), and it won the Oscar for best picture in 1980. Let's see how the book is!
