Ordeal by Innocence
Ordeal by Innocence | Agatha Christie
According to the courts, Jacko Argyle bludgeoned his mother to death with a poker. The sentence was life imprisonment. But when Dr. Arthur Calgary arrives with the proof that confirms Jacko’s innocence, it is too late—Jacko died behind bars following a bout of pneumonia. Worse still, the doctor’s revelations reopen old wounds in the family, increasing the likelihood that the real murderer will strike again.

My landlord divided up the backyard at my house so now I actually HAVE a backyard. The swing is now up for outside reading and listening/watching the birds.

I downloaded this for my UK trip, but wasn‘t in audiobook mode while traveling. I did watch the BBC miniseries adaptation on the plane & really enjoyed it. I finished the audiobook this morning & am completely floored by how different the two versions are! Same setup & characters, but SO different that I was wondering throughout the book whether the murderer would even be the same. Both kept me guessing & I recommend both on their own merits!

2. Currently reading too many! The tagged is my current audiobook.
3. Catch up on sleeeeeeep. Also probably go see The Hate U Give.

This book was okay. A little confusing on audio with all the different characters and POVs. I definitely did not guess who the bad guy was, so that was quite a surprise. Not my favorite Agatha Christie, but still an enjoyable mystery.

I really wanted to read this one, so I could watch the TV series on Amazon Prime.

Received this book as a goodreads giveaway and loved it. This is no surprise as I have loved every Agatha Christie novel I've read. No one sets a murder scene with so many possible suspects the way that Christie can. I guess that is why she is the Queen of Mystery.

I wanted to read this one before the new mini series premieres. I loved the focus on solving a crime long after the fact instead of in the heat of the moment. It‘s all about mistrust and assumed guilt. How well do you really know the people in your family? UPDATE: The miniseries totally changed the ending. I wasn‘t a fan.

I haven‘t read nearly enough Agatha Christie, which I‘m trying to rectify. I won this book on Goodreads. I understand it was one of Agatha Christie‘s favorites and I can see why! Kept me guessing until the end despite plenty of foreshadowing. Loved this story about “the calamity of the innocent.” Now to hunt down the BBC series...

(Photo from the new BBC adaptation.)

My previous Christie read was a disappointment (Elephants Can Remember - but I wish I couldn‘t), this was a return to the author in her stride. There were instances of racism, especially since one of the characters is biracial. I think these instances showed the personalities and problems of the characters who expressed them.

What happens when the condemned is proven innocent? Are all guilty by association?

Cosyreader What did you think of the BBC adaptation? If you saw it 13mo
Libby1 @Amy-Laura - I just caught up with it this weekend. Have you seen it? I don‘t want to say what I thought unless I know if you‘ve seen it. 😊 13mo
Cosyreader @Libby1 it was great! Really dark. I haven‘t read the book but I was told that the ending was different to the series 13mo
Libby1 @Amy-Laura - it was VERY different! But (and maybe I should whisper this!) I liked the film better than the book! 🤫 13mo
Cosyreader @Libby1 that doesn‘t surprise me haha the adaptation had so much drama in it! And it had a good cast 😊 13mo

I read this book recently to prepare for a BBC adaptation currently on TV in the UK. I sourced a copy of this book that was published in the 1970s and the illustrations are FUNKY.

This is totally happening now! I was a little ticked when the original air date of Christmas 2017 was cancelled but so far the extra time needed to recast the role of Mickey seems to have been worth the wait. I‘ve really enjoyed these last few Christie adaptions the BBC has done. It remains to be seen if this one can surpass And Then There Were None though. My favourite novel and, so far, favourite TV adaption.

#Christie #AgathaChristie

Cathythoughts I have my sky set to record this at home. I hope it worked. Looking forward to it 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 14mo

jillrhudy Is this the “ATTWN” adaptation with cutiepie Adrian T. in it? I have it on my Watch List and keep hoping Netflix or Prime will get it so I don‘t have to buy it. 14mo
BiblioLitten And Then There Were None is one of the best! 14mo
GarthRanzz @MommyWantsToReadHerBook There have been two others in recent years. The afore mentioned And Then There Were None and Witness for the Prosecution. The latter was done in 2016, starring Toby Jones. ATTWN was with Aidan Turner 2015. Both worth hunting down! 14mo
GarthRanzz @jillrhudy That‘s the one! What‘s funny is Demelza (Eleanor Tomlinson) is in Ordeal! 14mo
GarthRanzz @BiblioLitten It is! I really think that is one of my favourite of all adaptions. Maybe second behind the original Murder on the Orient Express. 14mo
BiblioLitten I haven't watched Murder on the Orient Express. Next on my list! 14mo
GarthRanzz @BiblioLitten The original from the 70‘s is the best! Then Episode 3 of Series 12 of the David Suchet series is next. Then last years theatrical version. If you want to watch all of them. 😊 14mo
BiblioLitten I think I'll start with the original from the 70s. Thanks 🙌 14mo

Seems like a good day to start another Christie book. I bought a handful of her books with this type of cover YEARS ago, but keep passing them up for newer, better looking covers. I'm determined to read the ones I already have before I start buying more, but it's so hard!

"A man who was a cripple, only half a man, what did it matter where he was?"

Oh my god, if authors could just stop writing stuff like that. I mean, I love Agatha Christie, but as a crip it's sooo annoying to see this "cripple = half a person" (mostly "half a man") thing, and the "because I'm disabled nothing matter in my life". Just ~ let it go ~
And don't use the word cripple unless you are one yourself.

lifeless1 Could be worse, she could've taken the Me Before You route. 🤢 2y
Sophieneechan @lifeless1 Very true! Not sure if I could've forgiven her for that! Seriously, fuck Me Before You 😡 2y

This book really touts that "when a woman cannot have biological children she will obsess over any and all children, and never settle down". I don't really agree with that. I'm sure there are people who do react like that, but none of those I know with adopted children are like that. One interesting thing is the lack of stories of adoption from those who are adopted, in general. It's not all roses and happiness.

I have read this book before, but I really wanted to do so again. If you haven't noticed, I'm going through all of Agatha Christie's books now, started with the Tommy & Tuppence ones, now on the independent ones, and I'm not counting the Mary Westmacott ones. (Might read those later though.)
