The world around us have revolutionized to an enormous extent. While it was imperative in the earlier ages to undertake a journey of thousand miles in order to meet a beloved residing in another continent, it is now possible to do the same via internet in a matter of minutes. In much the same way, the traditional hobby of "reading" have changed a lot - initially, the pages turned into computer and tablet screens, and now it is even possible to hear the books while on the go. Contained in the following pages is a walk through this new technology and all that is attached with it. Keep reading to know more about Audiobooks, specifically about Amazon Audible Audiobooks.

Anyone else having trouble with their #Audible app on Android since the last update on 12th September? I'm in the UK

Recently when I open it, it just crashes so I have to reinstall the app and I have done this most days recently and it is annoying me. I will report this to Audible but I wanted to ask if it is happening to anyone else first.

ljuliel I haven‘t had any issues , but I‘m not in the UK. Not sure if that helps or not. Hope it starts working again for you ! 3mo
Martyn_J_Pass Must be an Android thing - I have the app on my iPhone and it‘s fine, other than the new format driving me mad lol 3mo
NatalieR I‘ve been having that issue with an iPhone in the US. It seems to happen when I don‘t use the app consistently. Glad I‘m not the only one. 😏 3mo
Birdsong28 @NatalieR Thing is I use the app every day. So I have reported it to Audible but nothing has changed but they said to report it again if it keeps happening to be reported to the account specialist. 3mo
NatalieR @Birdsong28 Well, that response is discouraging. 😕 If I have this problem the next time I use the app I will report it too. 2mo

Loving #Audible 's update (I'm on Android) it now shows how long I have left on my current audiobooks either the one I am listening to or ones in my library in my cloud. Also it highlights the ones I have finished and are in my cloud in case I have forgotten lol 😂

Have you seen this @Ms_T @Andrew65 @cathythoughts ? 📚📖

Andrew65 I need to check on this and make sure I‘ve got the latest upgrade (iphone and iPad). 4mo
Cathythoughts I gave Audible on my kindle ... I originally had it on my phone & it‘s still there too. Must have a look 👍🏻♥️ 4mo

Once again I have a few audible credits piling up, so hit me with your recommendations please! I‘m very picky with narrators, if the reader sucks, no matter how great the book I just can‘t finish it. I love crime/mystery/thrillers, sci-fi & fantasy, magical realism & true crime. I know a lot of y‘all are audiowalking lately, so anything you really enjoyed, hit me up! Aaand GO!!
#audiowalking #litsywalkers #audiobook #recommendme

CarolynM I'm listening to The Hate U Give, and I think I'm getting more out of it because of the narration than I would if I was reading it. 10mo
Paula3 Dual narrators & great cop thriller 10mo
Kaye Here are some I‘ve listened to repeatedly ; Dolores Claiborne ( probably the best audio performance I‘ve ever heard) , The Humans ( terrific book and good narration) , Crapalachia( not sure if you‘ll like it, but the narration is TERRIFIC) , The Good Girl ( narrated by multiple people and all do well ) , Salt of the Earth ( excellent true crime) , True Grit ( western but narrated by Donna Tartt —-great narration and good book ) 10mo

Just a heads up to those folks that are Audible members. If you‘re interested in some Audible Originals for Free, if you pre order any of these now, it‘s free for any or all of them. AlaMich Oh thanks! I was meaning to check out the Originals for this month. I listened to Stephen Fry‘s Victorian Secrets last month. And coincidentally, my wife and just finished the first season of The Kominsky Method with Alan Arkin. (edited) 12mo

Reviewsbylola A very fascinating article. As someone who reads ebooks and audiobooks but mostly print books, I definitely can relate to what the article says as far as retention. And I am especially guilty of zoning out during audiobooks which is why I am very selective about which audiobooks I choose. 1y
Birdsong28 @Reviewsbylola I am just the same I zone out and wonder how long or how much have I missed and by that time more has been said so it's too long a time to go back 😂😂 Also I tend to read more print books. 😀📚📖 1y

This is such an accurate picture of me the last couple of days as #Audible is having a sale (UK) as I have got 4 books pre-ordered and bought another 3!! It's on till the 31 August if you are a member go grab yourself a bargain 🎧💸📖📚

TheSpineView Don't feel bad. The last Fantasy and SciFi sale I bought 11 audio books. 1y
Birdsong28 @TheSpineView It's just so tempting! But I know I am making huge savings and it's the price I would rather pay than the normal range as sometimes the length of the book does not warrant the price I think sometimes. I know they have to pay the narrator and for rights of the books but prices are ridiculous. 😀📚📖 1y
TheSpineView @Birdsong28 I agree! Just one more reason to snag as many as you can on sale. 💲 1y

Caroline2 Yeah, it‘s all reading?! So who cares!! 🤷‍♀️ I read to my kids loads, we all start off with audio reading! 👍🏻 1y
Birdsong28 @Caroline2 I was a bit unsure about audiobooks but since joining Litsy two years ago I have gone back to audiobooks and I am loving it. My favourite so far is Kevin Hart's bio as it was read by him so you got more info about certain things as it was just like him talking to you rather than someone just reading the text. So you always get so much more out of an audiobook than just the text. 📚📖 1y
Caroline2 Agreed! I defo need to listen to more audiobooks!! 1y

Here are my #audiblestats, although I am not exclusive with Audible... I listen to library books through Libby as much as I can, and also have a bunch on Overdrive, Volumes, and Libro.fm. Oh, and I‘ve listened a lot on Scribd and Playster in the past.

I have been getting this Audible email about a big Presidents‘ Day sale for a couple of weeks and I have been ignoring it because I thought it was for new customers only. I finally read it today and it‘s for returning customers too! Yippee! I have missed having Audible.

heelsnglitter Have you checked out Scribd? It's $8.99 a month for unlimited audiobooks and ebooks. The selection is incredible. ❤❤❤ 2y
ReadingSusan @heelsnglitter I have. I have never tried it because they have pretty terrible online reviews but glad to hear it works for you. 2y
Lola @ReadingSusan Some of those reviews were likely based on the fact that they switched to a model of limiting audiobook downloads to one a month and e-books to three (with credit some carryover allowed). As of Feb 6, they went back to unlimited. Unlike Audible, you don‘t own the titles you download and you only have access as long as you‘re a subscriber but they have a great selection of audiobooks, ebooks and periodicals. (edited) 2y
See All 7 Comments
ReadingSusan @Lola yeah I saw that too but there was a lot of stuff about the difficulty of canceling and some shady practices so I just tend to stay away from that. Plus I do like how audible doesn‘t take away your access while you don‘t have a membership. 2y
Lola @ReadingSusan I‘ve read many complaints from people about Audible re difficulty canceling and being charged for months after they cancelled but I personally haven‘t had issues with either service; I have and use both. Happy listening! 2y

Anyone having issues with their #Audible app on android as for the past couple of days I have listened to my book and every time I close the app it resets so it looks like I haven't listened all day when I know I have listened for at least 40 mins (20mins each way to work and back) and now its saying I didn't even listen in Oct when Iistened for 8 hours. Why I love #audiobooks 💖

blurb
abbsinwonderland

❌OPINIONS PLEASE❌
✨I was talking with my boyfriend about actual book prices VS. the price of the same books, but in Kindle or audiobook form.
✨In my opinion, the price difference (Audiobooks/Kindle/ebooks) between them is absurd & in a way kind of an insult not only to the publishers, but the authors themselves.
✨I'd LOVE to hear your guys thoughts & opinions on this. Personally, I can't read anything but ACTUAL in my hands books!📚
#SundayDebate

swishandflick I do think the price of physical books vs e-books can be a bit odd (though I also think it ultimately balances out since you have so many daily deals on e-books to take advantage of) but with audiobooks, though it's tough that they're pricey, it makes sense to me when you factor in the separate work/time to record it, produce it, etc. It's a whole separate batch of people in addition to the author/publisher who also need to be paid for their work. 2y
DGRachel The price, IMO has less to do with the book, and more to do with the format. Granted, I haven't done the research, so this is all assumption- but aren't ebooks less expensive to produce and distribute than print? I'm all for fair prices for labor & materials, but with print I'm paying for paper and glue and ink, not just the efile, and I'm okay paying a premium for it. Where's the insult to the publisher or author? (edited) 2y
abbsinwonderland @DGRachel how much do they make from ebooks, ect, verses the actual book? I honestly haven't done much research myself, that's why I'm reaching out on here. 2y
See All 49 Comments
bookloo Hey Abbi! While I agree with you that some Kindle prices can be absurd to the authors, I love my Kindle. The fact that I can get a book immediately from the comfort of my own bed and support my library in the process is a huge selling point to me and a lot of other e-readers. Do I still buy physical books? Of course! But if I desperately need it right then and there, my library doesn't have it, and it's cheaper? I'm getting it on my Kindle. ❤️ 2y
abbsinwonderland @swishandflick that is true for the Audiobooks. I didn't take into consideration the production of them. You're totally right on that. 2y
abbsinwonderland I believe I regret posting this. My apologies. I'll take it down soon. 2y
abbsinwonderland @bookloo that's totally understandable! 2y
Bette I usually only read actual books as well. I can't comment on what you are saying about personal prices. I purchase our library system's Overdrive ebooks, audio and my rant is that a single title can cost $95.00. When Gone Girl was popular, I had to purchase five copies, approximately 500 dollars, which would equal a huge amount of physical books. And many of our patrons have no idea that a book might cost 28$ and the same digital $95. Thx 4 👂 2y
swishandflick @abbsinwonderland No worries at all! It's a valid question and one I asked myself before buying my first audiobook 😄 2y
DGRachel @abbsinwonderland I think it's an interesting question. definitely no reason to apologize or take it down. I'm sorry if I sounded harsh. I'm certainly curious to find out more about how authors are compensated. I know with Kindle Unlimited, authors receive royalties based on the number of people who read the book cover to cover. People are not buying the books, but the author still gets paid if people read. That seems like a good deal for everyone (edited) 2y
abbsinwonderland @Bette OMG! $95!? Wow! Like I stated above, due to my own personal morals, I've never purchased an audiobook, ebook, or anything of the sort. So I probably have no right speaking on this topic since I haven't done much research into those forms, but I just found it interesting. 2y
bookloo @Bette I very recently found this out from an AMA on Reddit for OverDrive, but librarians were still praising it despite the ridiculous prices. Are we the readers supporting our libraries or hurting it by loving OverDrive, in your opinion? 2y
DGRachel @Bette Wow! I knew libraries had to pay a premium for books, but I had no idea it was so much. That's crazy! 2y
abbsinwonderland @DGRachel yes, that's kind of more of what I was getting at, how much the authors are actually compensated. You didn't sound harsh, I just kind of felt for a moment this post may have offended some. 2y
abbsinwonderland @bookloo @bette that's a great question! 2y
abbsinwonderland @MrBook I'm sure you may have an opinion on this? Being as you're a librarian? Or possibly even @BookBabe 2y
Bette @bookloo just my opinion, our patrons want the convenience, we want to give them what they want. I don't think it hurts to love Overdrive, it provides a service and we count the uses in our circulation. The publishers make us jump through hoops, some titles we can buy forever, some we lease for 12 or 24 months, some we lease for 26 circs and make us really pay for all of it. Pubs don't like unlimited folks getting something for a token amount. 2y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I'm like you in that I usually only buy physical books. I love hardcovers and feel like if I'm going to buy something I want to have in my possession! Lol I am old school though! If it's a popular book I will wait it out and buy it from Thriftbooks or Amazon when it when the price goes down. I do have a kindle fire that my husband bought as a birthday gift. I like it and use it some, mostly at bedtime so that he doesn't fuss about the light! 2y
abbsinwonderland @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks yes. Hardcovers are my life. I actually thought about getting a Kindle Fire for that exact same reason. Just because I stay up reading, but my boyfriend also wants me to lay with him when he goes to bed. I might have to look into one of those again, at least for his own comfort while trying to sleep. 2y
MrBook An excellent question! This comes up regularly at the library. I can understand why audiobooks are expensive--having friends who make them for a living, it's very intensive and requires a lot of overhead with equipment and what not. E-books should be much less expensive than they are, it's a matter of the digital format being hardly anything to copy and distribute. I am upset that physical copies--my go-to format--have up-ticked quite a bit. 2y
abbsinwonderland @Bette thank you so much for your insight. I honestly had no idea about most of that and learned alot. So thank you. I appreciate it! 💜 2y
Bette Thanks for listening. 👍💙 2y
abbsinwonderland @MrBook thanks for commenting. Do you have any insight to how much authors and publishers are compensated? 2y
abbsinwonderland @MrBook that's basically my main concern. I feel like, or know really, if they're receiving the compensation that they deserve for their hard work 2y
ferskner @bette @abbsinwonderland Agreed, library patrons have no idea the cost of other formats. I'm a collection development librarian, and I get complaints all the time that we don't purchase more audiobooks/ebooks (we do purchase both, but we only spend so much of the materials budget on it per our board's wishes, blah blah blah I have issues with that). Lots of patrons think we should have all formats of all books, and we can't do that. 2y
bookloo @Bette Like Abbi said, thank you for the response! My friends and I used to get so frustrated at our library for only buying one copy of a popular ebook with over 20 people waiting. We were like, "Why can't they buy 3 copies?!?!" I feel bad, and this definitely changed my perspective. I'll be sure to tell them! ?? 2y
Bette @bookloo @ferskner yep, it's our budget that drives what we can get, it's tough. Bookloo, don't feel bad, we feel bad too. Our system has recently changed our focus and we are buying more duplicates, which limits maybe a wider selection, but we figure the holds indicate what readers want. I think it's a process. What also is hard is that our digital folks aren't across the desk, so it's hard to communicate, I'd like to hear from them. 2y
abbsinwonderland @bette @bookloo @ferskner @MrBook I'd also like to make it known, seeming as I don't use those formats, I've never gotten angry at the librarians for the decisions and choices they make. I also don't check out books from my local library (germs, bugs, ect), but I do donate books to them and purchase a fair share monthly (heavily sanitized and cleaned) to support them that way. 2y
ferskner @abbsinwonderland 👌👍👏 2y
Bette Sweet! We all do what we can. 😊👍 2y
MrBook No, every author has a their own unique deal, and every publisher and platform works out different contracts. It must be mind-boggling 😳. 2y
TongueTiedSLP11 I do see the discrepancy as odd at times. However, the one benefit I do see for having audio books or e-books is that it's more environmentally friendly. But I like both honestly. 2y
CarolynM Both have their place but if I really love something I read as an ebook I have to have a hard copy 2y
abbsinwonderland @MrBook ah I see. I just didn't know if authors and publishers were getting ripped off or not. Thank you for your insight! 2y
MrBook It's an excellent question. I'd love to know too. Unless they make it known, I know nuttin' 😩. V.E. Schwab announced that she made a $1 million deal for her next book. Now THAT's cool! 😎👌🏻 She's definitely earned it. (edited) 2y
abbsinwonderland @MrBook maybe one day we'll have the answers lol. And yes that's awesome! 2y
RebL There is a difference on the consumer end as well. When you buy a physical book, it is yours forever & you can do with it whatever you wish. You can resell it, you can loan it, you can keep it on your shelf forever & no one can take it away from you. This is not true with digital format. You do not buy the book so much as you lease it. Sometimes you can loan them & sometimes your dealer can stop servicing a title & it disappears from your shelf. 2y
abbsinwonderland @RebL what?! Wow. I didn't know that. That's crazy 2y
KathyWheeler @ferskner I'm a reference librarian who may or may not be transitioning to collection development. Even at a university, we get people wanting us to purchase all formats of a title. I got so frustrated with this that once I did a local conference presentation where I talked about the difference in cost. The book I used as an example costs $24.00 in print. If I buy the ebook, which I did because it was our Common Read, the same title cost me $240. (edited) 2y
ferskner @KathyWheeler WOW! That is crazy! 2y
abbsinwonderland 😱😱😱😱😱 2y
KathyWheeler @ferskner To be fair, the access was for unlimited use, but it's still a hefty jump in price and the only difference is that more of our patrons can use the book at the same time. 2y
ferskner @KathyWheeler That makes sense. I used to buy databases for an academic library and the price difference between unlimited and limited use was astounding. 2y
KathyWheeler @ferskner Even the difference between 3-user and unlimited in terms of an ebook is astounding. 2y
bookloo @abbsinwonderland Not angry, just frustrated that over 30 people have to wait 21 days for each person to finish one copy of a book. But now that we know the costs for libraries, it's sorted. We're informed. 👍🏽 2y
abbsinwonderland @bookloo I'm glad this post turned out to be insightful and educational. Thank you everyone. 2y
GlassAsDiamonds Another comment here - I'm Australian and while I live overseas, my "home store" is usually Oz. It is galling beyond belief to see an eBook being sold on US Amazon for $2- but Australian Amazon for $9.99. To my mind, there's no way that's not just immoral price gouging. I prefer physical books anyway but the "Australian" eBook does NOT cost more to make. 2y
abbsinwonderland @GlassAsDiamonds thanks for commenting! I didn't even think about prices for other countries! 2y
GlassAsDiamonds @abbsinwonderland 😊 it makes it really hard. The standard cost of a small paperback is usually around $16-, the argument being transport costs since they're imported but eBooks that stupidly priced and I think it just massively inflates piracy. Anti-piracy studies show that people prefer to legally buy IF the prices are reasonable but we can google so we know when we're being screwed. It's really annoying. Good topic! 😊 2y

#audiobookstogo #backtoreading

I'm a newbie when it comes to audiobooks, having just started listening to them since joining Litsy. It's a different kind of skill to reading but they certainly takes away the drudgery of Sunday housework. Whispersync is my latest discovery and means my audio library is sure to grow 📚📚📚📚📚

bedandabook Some great books on there! How was The Crow Girl? It's on my wish list. 2y
GondorGirl You can get the Overwatch app and link it to your local library card. Then you can check out audio books for free. 2y
Ms_T @bedandabook Thanks! I really enjoyed The Crow Girl (I have a soft spot for Swedish authors) and the narration by Gabrielle Glaister was fab 👍🏻 2y

Ms_T @GondorGirl Unfortunately we don't seem to have Overwatch in the UK. 2y
kathedron Litsy has got me trying audiobooks, too. I get mine from the library, via Overdrive. 2y
Ms_T @River_Voice Litsy is great for sharing information, isn't it?! 2y
bedandabook Good to know, @Ms_T; I'll have to get it. I have a soft spot for Nordic authors too. 2y
Cathythoughts Me too , new to audio & loving it. Got Exit West ( a Litsy recommendation ). Really looking forward to it. Plus it's great for multi-tasking. Yes , I agree about the House cleaning ! It just became kind of fun 💃🏾💃🏾 I might even get to some window cleaning ( not my favourite) (edited) 2y
Ms_T @Cathythoughts Let me know how the window cleaning goes! 2y

I'm heading out of town for a few days, and need some rec's!

What are your favorite audiobooks? I'm looking for both a good story and a great narrator! 😃

I feel it's time I embraced audiobooks... 🤔

Purrfectpages I've been thinking the same thing! 3y

Reecaspieces Can't go wrong!! I keep headphones in my ears all over the house...folding clothes, gardening, cooking. 3y
Ms_T @Reecaspieces That's exactly what I want it for, plus shopping and walking 😃 3y
Cberbs I love audiobooks. Beware the sad books and the ones that have you laughing out loud all by yourself. :-) 3y
Ms_T @Cberbs That could be embarrassing! 3y
Cberbs @Ms_T It's probably not that different from how I normally act. I laugh at random memories in my head and cry to almost any song on the radio. :-) 3y

I didn't find anything this time either. But I did find a single title to purchase with one of my credits. I've become really stingy with them. I couldn't justify using a credit on any of the selected titles. But hopefully you'll find something.

HardcoverHearts Same for me! I am actually thinking of cancelling my subscription because I now use Hoopla and Overdrive so much that it feels like a lot of money to pay each month. 3y
Donna_sBookMinute @HardcoverHearts -- If my credits get stacked too much, that'll be my cue to cancel. They allow you to carryover six. I'm down to two after my purchase on yesterday. Yes, I use Hoopla and Overdrive frequently for titles I don't need to own. The ones I get from Audible are books I know I'll want to listen to again. 3y
SaraFair Yes, I think I am going to only do the monthly deal when there is one I really want. Lately I have gotten a few on the daily deal that luckily I was excited about. I just get really hyped up about memoirs voiced by the author! I did not know about Hoopla and our small town Overdrive choices are limited. 3y

Ever speed up an audiobook to hurry up and get to the end? As long as I can follow along ... Actually the plot is becoming more intense; so I might have to go back to regular speed. #speedlistening

BookishMarginalia I listen at 1.5 speed. 2x is still too fast (wish Audible had a 1.75 speed!) 3y
Rachael_reads Yes, some people speed read, but I speed listen. 3y
Dolly Depends on the book and it's due date 3y
Donna_sBookMinute @BookishMarginalia -- Normally 2 would be too fast. But I tried it with this one; and it's okay for a brief period. I don't think I'd go any faster though. Plus the narrator has perfect diction and I think that helps. @Rachel_reads -- #speedlistening is a skill! @Dolly -- very true for library books. You can't always renew. Then you're stuck until next time it comes around. 3y
