The Inferno | Dante
113 posts | 200 read | 6 reading | 84 to read
The epic grandeur of Dantes masterpiece has inspired readers for 700 years, and has entered the human imagination. But the further we move from the late medieval world of Dante, the more a rich understanding and enjoyment of the poem depends on knowledgeable guidance. Robert Hollander, a renowned scholar and master teacher of Dante, and Jean Hollander, an accomplished poet, have written a beautifully accurate and clear verse translation of the first volume of Dantes epic poem, the Divine Comedy. Featuring the original Italian text opposite the translation, this edition also offers an extensive and accessible introduction and generous commentaries that draw on centuries of scholarship as well as Robert Hollanders own decades of teaching and research. The Hollander translation is the new standard in English of this essential work of world literature.

“I am the way into the city of woe,
I am the way into eternal pain,
I am the way to go among the lost.

Justice caused my high architect to move,
Divine omnipotence created me,
The highest wisdom, and the primal love.

Before me there were no created things
But those that last forever - as do I.
Abandon all hope you who enter here.”

I read two #poemsbeforephones this morning before getting distracted. Chen Chen mentioned shoelaces in one of his poems, & I remembered a poem I wrote in high school about my skater shoes & my ex-boyfriend. So, OF COURSE I needed to find it — & my old Livejournal. 😆

Here it is, in all of its embarrassing glory! I think it‘s clear that it‘s inspired by ”Dante‘s Inferno”/“Independent Women” by Destiny‘s Child. What else can you say that about? 😅

"Do not ask, Reader, how my blood ran cold
and my voice choked up with fear. I cannot write it:
this is a terror that cannot be told." -Dante, The Inferno

This is the epic poem of Dante's descent through the levels of Hell, with the poet Virgil as his guide. I hadn't read this since high school, many many many years ago, so this is the first book on my #ReadingClassicsIn2019 list. #coffeeandabook #englishteacher #classicliterature #apliterature

"Nel mezzo del cammin di nostra vita." Today I am the same age when Dante set out for his journey! I figure this should be the right time to read the entire Commedia. I feel like I've been through hell and back already, but I know this is just the beginning. I'm grateful I found my Virgil(s) though. For all the good, the bad, and the in-betweens; the days, months, and years: a celebration for all that was, and is yet to come. ?

tpixie Good for you! 9mo

Cocytus, a frozen lake, is located in the ninth circle. This is where traitors (familial, political & religious) are imprisoned in ice. It is the scene of an uncharacteristic attack by Dante when he kicks Bocca degli Abati in the head, an incident Blake would illustrate. This is also where Dante & Virgil finally face Satan. They find him imprisoned in ice, chewing on Judas with one mouth & Brutus & Cassius with his other two mouths.

While I‘ve never been a big fan of or believer in the Christian hell, I love Dante as a poet and a writer. His Divine Comedy is obviously a treasure of the western literary canon. At $85 for letterpress printing on nice paper and illustrated manuscript style, the Thornwillow Press edition is amazing. Dante's Inferno is a great read for our times. You can pass the time figuring out where certain politicians belong...

Planning & writing down some of the books I definitely want to read in 2019. I've read most of the books on my Famous First Lines mug, but I want to read the ones I haven't read, and reread the ones I haven't read in a very long time. I'm also planning to read/reread several other classics. I enjoyed looking through my bookshelves to see what I should put on my list! The tagged book is the one I'm starting with in January. #ReadingClassicsIn2019

"In the middle of the journey of life, I found myself in a dark wood, where the direct way was lost. It is a hard thing to speak of, how wild, harsh and impenetrable that wood was, so that thinking of it recreates the fear. It is scarcely less bitter than death: but, in order to tell of the good that I found there, I must tell of the other things I saw there."

I must have been insane to read this 😂 Dante sure does love his similes. I sort of trekked through it to try and finish it so it felt like something I had to do rather than something I wanted to read (I‘m very stubborn about not DNF-ing books) but overall I didn‘t hate it and I think that‘s the best I‘ll be able to say about 14th century Italian poetry 😂😂 (Crown added to keep your feed PG)

vivastory I've read Inferno three times & my best advice is to get a good translation. The Robert Pinsky treats it for what it is, a poem. He doesn't bog down the text with footnotes & excruciatingly boring academic explanations. 1y

Mehso-so

So-so not because it was bad - it's obviously not - but because I'm not sure if there was much point in me reading it. Many of the cantos are focused around references to historical Italian scandals or a mangled version of Greek and Latin mythology based on the few books Dante had access to. At no point was I struck by Dante's wisdom or expression - it came off as very boring and flat.

Penguin's edition includes 250 pages of very dry commentary.

Liz_M Oooft. I listened to Inferno and found it lovely and some imagery is still worth me, but I also didn't care about the people-specific punishments. 1y

Soup, tea, and Dante's inferno.

On Canto 12. The notes are all like "Dante's masterful use of such and such brilliantly draws the reader into contemplating the nature of sin etc. etc.", but then I get to the canto and I don't see it.

Oh well. If I understood everything I read what would be the point? It wouldn't be fun anymore.

Emilymdxn I often find the notes in penguin classics annoying like that 😕 I wish they wouldn‘t insist I find the writing insightful before I‘ve had a chance to actually find it insightful! I had better luck with the oxford edition I think 1y
Settings Yeah. Rather have someone passionate about the poem write the notes though. I've read some Shakespeare editions where the note/intro writer kept going on about how the play was a failure. Planning on continuing with the other 2 books so if my library has the Oxford classics one I'll try it next. :) 1y
rwmg Maybe I should try again some time. I just got bogged down in all the notes on the life and careers of the people he sees in Inferno 1y

Penguin edition (Robin Kirkpatrick). Not possible to understand it without the notes, but the notes prime a biased interpretation and reading them before the canto saps some of the life out of it.
