Carry On, Jeeves | P G Wodehouse
24 posts | 28 read | 15 to read
A Gentleman of Leisure is a comic novel dedicated to Douglas Fairbanks--who starred in the film version; in Hot Water, J. Wellington Gedge is the man who has everything--but finds himself caught in a series of international events. Summer Moonshine involves a complicated love quadrangle and what is probably the ugliest home in England; and Carry On, Jeeves is a collection of stories in which Jeeves the charge and a familiar bevy of individuals appeal to him to solve their problems.

My first Wodehouse, a chance find at the library. At first I found it mildly amusing, but the more I read, the more I liked it. Wodehouse has a really funny way with words. Bertie is an idiot, but likeable. I had expected Jeeves to be the genius in the background, and was surprised that Bertie and everybody else asks for his help. When I returned the book, I found the dvds at the library and brought them home with me 🙂

Aimeesue Wodehouse ❤️❤️❤️ 3mo
QuietlyLaura Hugh Laurie is excellent as Bertie Wooster! His facial expressions are hilarious. Stephen Fry is superb as Jeeves. ❤️❤️ 3mo

PickwickPlockPlock @Aimeesue @QuietlyLaura @Sarah83 I've only seen Hugh Laurie playing grumpy old men before, I've got to say he makes a very believable dimwit 😁 2mo
Sarah83 The interaction between Fry and Laurie is so awesome. I really enjoy their playing. 😍 2mo
RamsFan1963 @PickwickPlockPlock If you watch the various Black Adder series, especially Black Adder The Third, you will see Hugh Laurie can play a truly glorious idiot. 😁😁 2mo
PickwickPlockPlock @RamsFan1963 Black Adder is one of the shows I have heard of but never had the chance to watch. Maybe I can catch it on youtube 😉 2mo
Kaddele It was the other way for me - the first time I saw Hugh Laurie in something serious I was absolutely flabbergasted :) Bertie is one of my favourite narrators - I adore his voice. 2mo

Such a witty and funny book. Had me in fits of histerics all the while I was listening to it. Probably made more than one person go: well she's a bit bunkers!
Definitely highly recommend! The best summary of this book is these two lines from it:

Jeeves: we must think sir
Bertie: you think. I haven't got the machinery!

Ye_Mighty_Andy_Spare Anyone who likes Wodehouse is a supremely decent person. His writing's sublime 13mo
Azar @Ye_Mighty_Andy_Spare why thank you! And I do agree. He's just brilliant! Can't wait for the next one 13mo

Today‘s photo prompt for #LitsyClassics photo challenge was #series. This was the first thing that came to my mind! I know people have pretty strong opinions about these books. I haven‘t read them all but i did find it comical. Has anyone else read these? Thoughts?

wanderinglynn I enjoy P.G. Wodehouse. I especially love the TV adaptation of Jeeves & Wooster with Hugh Laurie & Stephen Fry. 1y
BookaholicNatty @wanderinglynn oh man!!!! I will have to check that out!!!!! 1y
Lcsmcat I enjoy them. They‘re light and witty, which is sometimes just what I need. 1y

CarolynM Love Wodehouse, so, so funny. @wanderinglynn That TV version was the best! We still sing Forty Seven Ginger Headed Sailors when the mood takes us, and add "sir" to the responses in Minnie the Moocher? 1y
QuietlyLaura I've listened to a couple the Jeeves & Wooster stories on audio and enjoyed them. The TV series is excellent just as @wanderinglynn said. Hugh Laurie as Bertie Wooster is hilarious! 1y
QuietlyLaura @CarolynM 😂 Love Minnie The Moocher and Jeeves singing! 1y
sarahjane1077 I LOVE Wodehouse! Nothing is better than the Jeeves and Wooster tv show too. 1y

Wodehouse is such a clever writer and I love these completely preposterous situations Bernie and Jeeves get themselves into.

This was my third finished book for #24in48 and my first finished book for the #ReadHarder challenge.

#SeptemBowie #day5 #GoldenYears I'm a huge fan of the Golden Years crime genre. Some amazing authors write these books including Dame Agatha, P.G.Wodehouse,Carola Dunn,Nicola Upson,Kerry Greenwood,Sulari Gentill,Dashiell Hammett, P.D.James,Raymond Chandler & Ngaio Marsh, just to name a few! Some of my favourite novels were written by this amazing group of writers. Even now, years after her death, Dame Agatha remains a top selling author, worldwide.

#BookMail today is this short story collection which first introduces us to the character of Jeeves. I've always meant to read the Jeeves books but never gotten around to it, so when I saw this on special on book depository.com I had to buy it. I was compelled, really. Hubby?

Libby1 This one is great fun! 2y
Sue I love the Jeeves books so much. Bertie is such a tool and Jeeves is an utter mastermind. 2y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag I went audio for Jeeves... not bad but not quite my cup of tea 2y
Peterfox123 Over the years I've gone back not just to Jeeves but so many other Wodehouse books. It's like getting a fix or a recharge. How such apparently simple prose can be so deftly crafted is very hard, I think, to explain. There's also an underlying kindness to everything. No real villains. No lost causes. It's away a gentle pleasure entering this world. 2y

I've been such a good bookworm.I haven't made an online order for a month(we'll just ignore the fairy loot, owlcrate & yachronicles subscriptions ok? Ok.)Then, I'm happily browsing Litsy, enjoying all the pretty posts and WHAM! @elkeo happened. All those pictures of packages & boxes on her doorstep, and then droolworthy new book pictures. What was I supposed to do?It was like a train wreck in slow-mo.You know I'm pointing the hubby your way right?

This is really fun, light British humor. Young gentleman of leisure Bertie Wooster seems to have an army of friends with hard-to-please aunts and uncles, or bridal troubles, and he always jumps to their rescue. That is, his butler, Jeeves comes up with the smart plan. Intelligently humorous, sometimes laugh-out loud, but the stories get repetitive and have no depth. ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5

RealBooks4ever This book is hilarious! 🤣💜 2y

I finished this delightful little book whilst waiting for my husband to come out of a movie (hence the weird table and lighting). He went to see a movie and I went to a dramatisation of Jane Eyre. He now wishes he'd joined me. 😊

The stories in this series featuring Jeeves the all-knowing valet and his clueless boss Wooster follow a predictable but highly amusing pattern that is so VERY English!

Highly recommended.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Bertie Wooster's nightmare house guest:

"He is a vegetarian and a teetotaller and is devoted to reading. Give him a nice book and he'll be quite contented."

These stories are a great way to unwind at the end of a long day. Sure it harks back to a time where class was truly enshrined and rarely challenged, but it is a joy to watch Jeeves cleverly manipulate every situation to suit his own preferences. It made me smile so much. And great to read a couple of stories in between some darker books.

BookishMarginalia Have you seen the BBC series with a young Hugh Laurie? 3y

Thoroughly enjoying this Jeeves book. This book has the initial meeting between Bertie and Jeeves and sets up the outlines that all the stories follow. Jeeves dislikes Bertie's clothing selection, solves Bertie's problem, Bertie gives in re clothes. #somethingforsept #bookanddrink a bit delayed but still. Coffe and Jeeves, should really be tea or liquor.
