The One Hundred Nights of Hero
The One Hundred Nights of Hero: A Graphic Novel | Isabel Greenberg
105 posts | 69 read | 2 reading | 181 to read
In the tradition of The Arabian Nights, a beautifully illustrated tapestry of folk tales and myths about the secret legacy of female storytellers in an imagined medieval world. In the Empire of Migdal Bavel, Cherry is married to Jerome, a wicked man who makes a diabolical wager with his friend Manfred: if Manfred can seduce Cherry in one hundred nights, he can have his castle--and Cherry. But what Jerome doesn't know is that Cherry is in love with her maid Hero. The two women hatch a plan: Hero, a member of the League of Secret Story Tellers, will distract Manfred by regaling him with a mesmerizing tale each night for 100 nights, keeping him at bay. Those tales are beautifully depicted here, touching on themes of love and betrayal and loyalty and madness. As intricate and richly imagined as the works of Chris Ware, and leavened with a dry wit that rivals Kate Beaton's in Hark! A Vagrant, Isabel Greenberg's One Hundred Nights of Hero will capture readers' hearts and minds, taking them through a magical medieval world.

Cherry and Hero love each other, but Cherry‘s father forces her to marry. So of course her husband makes a bet with his friend about her virtue and when he loses the bet Cherry and Hero are accused of witchcraft. All of this set in a world created by a bird girl whose father decides he wants to run her creation because it‘s too lenient and no one fears him. Not a bad story, but not great either.

Everybody loves this book: it tell‘s women‘s stories, and its mesage is how important it is to tell women‘s stories. This is good. However, I detested the format and the writing. The writing is childish, and the occasional swearing took me out of the fairy-tale feeling. Many claim this book is beautiful: but to me it looks dirty and ugly. And I hated that most men were depicted as evil, power-hungry and stupid. That‘s too simplistic. ⭐️⭐️/5

This is a #graphicnovel about #feminism and is AMAZINGLY well done. As someone that doesn‘t read this genre frequently, the dialogue was beautiful and humor was ongoing as well as the seriousness of the topic. #surprisinglygood #popsugar2018

There can‘t be #noordinarylove between Hero and Cherry for a long time, because they have to deal with creepy men treating them like objects. Luckily, through story telling and rebellion, everything ends as it is supposed to 👌

#FierceFeb Day 1: This feminist graphic novel is an exquisite description of the #ModernWoman - I love how womanity is portrayed so effectively and with such utter strength, quiet voice, and resolute power in this graphic novel that turns myths over on their head with such glee and abandon.

Hello hello! I have just one #bookishgift this year but it's a great one from my sister-in-law. And I'm going to settle down and read it, then later build my awesome Women of NASA Lego set the Husband got me. In the afternoon we're taking the kids to watch The Last Jedi!

This is my #bookhaul from the Sirens conference 📚
They had a hand curated bookshop of women‘s fantasy with 1,000 titles - not copies, TITLES - and on my first walkthrough I was pleased I already had so many of the books featured.
Meaning I would not ‘need‘ to buy any.
HAHAHA.
This is me 15 books later 😁
And they put my carry-on through the airport security scanner twice - were they wondering why anyone would have a bag of 100% books? 😹

TheWordJar Great haul! And River of Teeth!!! I need to get my hands on that one!! (There's a rhino emoji but no hippo emoji???) 2y

In this retelling of The Arabian Nights, an evil man, Manfred, tries to seduce his friend's wife, Cherry. Manfred must seduce Cherry within a hundred nights, so he keeps thinking " #tonighttonight, it is going to happen tonight!" What Manfred hasn't considered is Hero, Cherry's lover. Hero keeps telling Manfred stories every night, and she does it so well, that Manfred wants to continue to listen to stories night after night. ?✨?✨

I picked this one up right after reading Greenberg's The Encyclopedia of Early Earth. This was a different take on the Arabian Nights, a slightly underwhelming one. Some of the stories told by Hero were very interesting but the overarching premise was less so.

I've read some great books this year, but so far nothing beats my love for Isabel Greenberg's work. This is her second graphic novel to take place in the Early Earth, a world full of amazing storytellers, wise crones, impossible lovers and, especially in this second book, incredibly strong female characters. So good! #TGIFGiveaway

Kalalalatja It is one of the best graphic novels I have ever read! 2y
Aninski @Kalalalatja I don't understand why her books are so underrated! The first one had its price permanently reduced from $35 to $10 at my closest book store 😱people don't know what they're missing... 2y

Hobbinol I can see why. Your cats are so beautiful. I had a little pewter gray cat once. She was my bestie for sure. She lived 22 years until she grew blind and deaf. We waited to buy a new house until she had gone onto her own. I miss her so much.. Hope you are back to normal by now! (edited) 3y

The One Hundred Nights of Hero is a gorgeous 2016 graphic novel that should have gotten a lot more attention than it did. The art is beautiful, the meta humor a delight, and its message profound. Referencing a host of fables that help elevate its own story to that same ancient, symbolic truth of the mythic, the frame narrative is based on Scheherazade's. ⬇️

Jokila Cherry and Hero are a pair of female lovers who must protect themselves from male brutality with the art of storytelling in a culture of patriarchy and monotheism that marginalizes advances like literacy as witchcraft and--obviously--executes women for blasphemous crimes like reading or refusing to marry. ⬇️ 3y
Jokila The stories Hero tells all revolve around the themes of sisterhood, love, and inequality as it relates to the struggle to be a good, just, moral, and heroic person as a member of a powerless underclass. Its characters must face, over and over again, the lose-lose dilemmas that force them to choose between betraying their values and the violence of a world that will never let them be both themselves and happy. ⬇️ 3y
Jokila It's heartbreaking, but with a beacon of hope at its center, as a story about how stories themselves can transcend the chains that bind the human spirit and transform reality into something closer to the ideal. ⏹ 3y
minkyb Sounds beautiful! 3y
