The Encyclopedia of Early Earth
The Encyclopedia of Early Earth: A Novel | Isabel Greenberg
A beautifully illustrated book of imaginary fables about Earth's early--and lost--history. Before our history began, another--now forgotten--civilization thrived. The people who roamed Early Earth were much like us: curious, emotional, funny, ambitious, and vulnerable. In this series of illustrated and linked tales, Isabel Greenberg chronicles the explorations of a young man as he paddles from his home in the North Pole to the South Pole. There, he meets his true love, but their romance is ill-fated. Early Earth's unusual and finicky polarity means the lovers can never touch. As intricate and richly imagined as the work of Chris Ware, and leavened with a dry wit that rivals Kate Beaton's in Hark! A Vagrant, Isabel Greenberg's debut will be a welcome addition to the thriving graphic novel genre.

Even more gorgeous than the kindle version I read last year, this is one of my favourite graphic novels of all time. I loved the imagination and the fairytale-ish reimagining of so many myths and stories we already know as part of a new and different mythology. Perfect october fireside reading (if I had a fire)

One of my favourite graphic novels of all time which i regretted reading on kindle because the art was so beautiful! When I saw it in the library I knew I needed to reread a physical copy. It‘s just as wonderful as I remember.

Fairly free weekend so I‘m going to do lots of #scarathlon2021 reading hours and enjoy the #anywayyoureadathon 😍 #teamslaughter

One of the most beautiful engaging graphic novels I‘ve ever read. Versions of myths, and new myths, told through the lens of various characters in Early Earth. The art was so dreamy and beautiful and i adored the magic and world building.

There were aspects of this book that were great: the world building, the coloring and inking, the asides that characters made. But I couldn‘t make sense of the story‘s construction. It might be based around oral traditions? But in a paper form, reading it, I kept wondering “Why is this happening now?”. That said, the invaders to Nordland chanting “Lads, lads, lads” made me snort.

I wish this story would have come together better at the end. I was left with some unanswered questions but the graphics were super cute. Giving this one ⭐⭐⭐💫

I didn‘t like this quite as much as The One Hundred Nights of Hero, but I still love the art and the worldbuilding. The structure was similar, one person telling a whole bunch of stories within a frame story. Also, BirdMan is still a jerk 😂

Somewhere between a pick and a so-so... It wasn't quite as interesting as I had hoped, but still pretty good. Beautiful drawings, myth-style stories, some fun juxtaposition of modern phrasing and ancient times. #letsgetgraphicweeklongreadathon

A big book of storytelling and storytellers and stories! The stories are often ones we can guess, old stories we've always known, but then the story of the storyteller is something else entirely. A boy looking for a missing piece of his soul, two people in love whose magnetic fields repel each other, this graphic novel brings us closer to words, words that are close to our soul, words that keep us away from others.

Isabel Greenberg's art style is right up my alley - the colour palette is amazing, there's so many details and it is kinda quirky. The stories them selves are really good, and they retell different myths, like Noah's ark and the Flood. I love how Greenberg manages to tell so many different stories within one overarching story, which, btw, is kinda sad.

Amazing! A land filled with creation stories, about a storyteller all ruled over by a bird God and his two raven children. There's a lot inspired by different cultures mythologies here, lots of native culture, probably Scandinavian, British, Celtic, etc.

I'll read anything Greenberg writes set in this faux prehistory of hers. It reflects and distorts our familiar narrative frames and fable tropes to expose systemic discrimination and mock hierarchy in a way that's so accessibly charming.

I really love Isabel Greenberg. She reworks metanarratives of divine creation, great floods and wise old crones to redefine what makes a human heroic. (Hint: it's not a sword.)

Definitely a graphic novel streak this month! I read this after I heard a raving review. This is a graphic novel of the history before the last ice age, where dinosaurs and humans roamed the earth at the same time. And humans were still in touch with the magical. There's a lot of colonial aspects in this world and I believe the Nords are very similar to Canada's Inuit people. The mythology is absolutely fantastic and I recommend this to everyone!

I think this is one of my favorite adult graphic novels. It begins with a north pole man meeting a south pole woman and falling in love. The problem is that they can't get within two feet of each other due to a strange magnetic force. They are forced to live at least 2 feet apart and never touch but remain deeply in love. To pass the time they tell each other stories and folktales about their god Birdman, hungry giants, and magical creatures.
