Shame
Shame: A Novel | Salman Rushdie
A gripping account of the 1918 flu pandemic and the modern-day hunt for this elusive and deadly virus In 1918, a flu virus more lethal than any that has come along since swept through the world, from the remotest villages in Arctic climates to crowded U.S.cities to the battlefields of Europe, killing forty million people. Yet, despite its devastating toll and the probability that other deadly pandemics await on the horizon, it was relegated to a footnote in history. The Devil's Flu is the extraordinary story of 1918's forgotten tragedy and of the global scientific community's effort to avert another such disaster. The 1918 flu still so intrigues and frightens experts in the field that in 1998, a group of respected scientists journeyed to the Norwegian Arctic Circle in search of the mysterious killer. InThe Devil's Flu, Davies captures the excitement of the hunt and the intense rivalries within the scientific community, and paints a vivid portrait of the eccentric scientists bent on capturing the prize information that could hold the key to our future safety. And as far as the next pandemic is concerned, scientists agree: it's not a question of if, but when.

Found a Rushdie. Forgot that I had started a stack of books for this challenge.
Back from overseas and a yucky virus found me on the plane trip home 🏡 🙃

Rushdie‘s books are apparently not for me. I had a hard time staying focused and following this strange story. It took me a long time on several walks to get through it, and I don‘t quite understand what I listened to.

Roary47 Oh man! I hope he is able to recover quickly. 😢 2y
BethM @Roary47 it doesn‘t sound great.. “Rushdie was on a ventilator Friday evening and could not speak, his agent, Andrew Wylie, told the New York Times.

"Salman will likely lose one eye; the nerves in his arm were severed; and his liver was stabbed and damaged," Wylie told the Times. "The news is not good."

#AdventRecommends Day 4

Sharing a picture of the back cover because the synopsis on Litsy is wrong. This has all the greatness of Rushdie's writing without being intimidating. It's short and more accessible than some of his other books. A poignant, heart-felt exploration of shame and honour and how they shape our lives, particularly in the East. A good place to start with Rushdie. Highly recommended for Khaled Hosseini fans.

A beautifully written novel based on the politics and leaders of the newly created Pakistan. After a wonderful opening, I gradually lost interest in this satire of people and events of which I am ignorant. The writing did not make the two opposing families distinct enough for me to follow the plot. I should have read this in tandem with some kind of cliff notes.

Liz_M Darn heck. I meant to make this a review. I really must have more coffee before posting. 6y
Billypar Nice review! I love Rushdie, but his books do feel like endurance tests- midway through my brain is weary from having to unpack so many references, either to other parts of the book, or to historical events. Very dense while you're reading one, but satisfying after you've finished. 6y
arubabookwoman Rushdie is hit or miss for me. Too bad that one sounds like a miss. I will still be reading it (hopefully soonish) because it‘s on my shelf and because it‘s on the 1001 list. 6y

I‘m pretty embarrassed that I didn‘t figure out about the Litsy crash till after it happened. Must be time for another only-Litsy-and-Goodreads social media cleanse! 😅🤦🏻‍♀️

#Itsbeginning to look a lot like exam time at my home. At the moment I'm writing a paper about shame (very interesting!), which is to be handed in by Jan 2nd, and in a couple of weeks I'm doing a week long exam in Organizational Psychology (not that interesting). 📚📖📝

#SeasonsReadings2017

Louise I seem to recall that Brené Brown's first book was on shame. Might be a good reference. Best of luck with your paper! 6y
JazzFeathers That sounds so interesting. Are you looking at shame in a psychological or antropological way? 6y
Kalalalatja @JazzFeathers psychology. I'm looking at how the emotion regulation of shame decides whether shame is adaptive or maladaptive for the individual. It is super interesting! 6y

Kalalalatja @Louise thank you, I might check it out 👍 6y
JazzFeathers @Kalalalatja lt does sound like it is. I think shame is one if the most complex emotions we feel 6y
Avanders .... I would love to read that paper if you're in any way comfortable with sharing it when you've finished! Sounds fascinating! 6y

How do you flag a book with an error in its listing? Because the "synopsis" attached to this one is for a TOTALLY different book.

What good is a book about women and gender politics if you just turn a girl into a literary device? Eh.
