Out | Natsuo Kirino
Nothing in Japanese literature prepares us for the stark, tension-filled, plot-driven realism of Natsuo Kirinos award-winning literary mystery Out.This mesmerizing novel tells the story of a brutal murder in the staid Tokyo suburbs, as a young mother who works the night shift making boxed lunches strangles her abusive husband and then seeks the help of her coworkers to dispose of the body and cover up her crime. The coolly intelligent Masako emerges as the plots ringleader, but quickly discovers that this killing is merely the beginning, as it leads to a terrifying foray into the violent underbelly of Japanese society. At once a masterpiece of literary suspense and pitch-black comedy of gender warfare, Out is also a moving evocation of the pressures and prejudices that drive women to extreme deeds, and the friendships that bolster them in the aftermath.

This one is definitely not for the faint of heart…that being said, wow, this is a fantastically dark, riveting story that will leave you turning pages in wonder & horror. A simmering rage lurks in the background of this story about a woman who has had enough & the aftermath of a fateful decision. And then, it somehow gets even darker. Translated from the Japanese this was a thrilling, unforgettable read. Not an easy read but it‘s really good.

More murder and mayhem from Japan for today‘s reading. For whatever reason, books in translation seem to be the sweet spot right now. This one is an award winner so I‘m anticipating a great read.

batsy I thought it was great. But it is kinda tough/grim. 3w

🩸 🔪 This book is brutal! Not for the squeamish!
1 woman kills her husband, 3 women cut up the body and get rid of it. And from there the fun and games begin. There were some great twists in this book. I loved it except for the ending. I had a huge issue with that! 🤮
Why hasn‘t this been made into a movie?

This was brilliant but brutal. Four women on a factory line agree to cover up a murder. But this step into the darker world will bring unforeseen consequences.
This is a literary crime novel so a lot of time is spent on fleshing out characters & their interactions and back stories - which i like. Youre also a little at arms length from the characters which i prefer in crime novels - you dont identify with them. There is a great sense of setting⬇️

Centique And its interesting to read a much more working class version of city life in Japan. Trigger warnings for gore and for violence towards women. Also a spoiler comment below. 5mo
Centique The idea that a woman might enjoy some part of their assault is problematic. I get how it fits into the story and the characters arc but we just have an existing rape culture in the real world that doesnt need to be bolstered - so that was unfortunate i think. 5mo

Think Jo Nesbo or Stieg Larsson but female-authored in translated Japanese, with a cast of poor housewives working at a boxed lunch factory. It‘s very gruesome (several bodies get cut up, and there are descriptions of violent murders), yet very readable and page-turningly good 👇

JillR I read this only because it was a gift - from my horror-film and Stephen King loving husband - and was daunted by the fact it looked “classic-y” and was also over 500 pages long. I imagined a book version of an arty, complicated, subtitled horror film (not my thing). So I went in a bit grumpily, then begrudgingly realised I was really enjoying it 😬 10mo

This novel took me so long to finish. It's tedious in some places and violent and grotesque in others (although there's only one book that's ever made me feel physically ill and this isn't it). What kept me from dropping it was the characters, none of whom are fully good or bad. I enjoy the way that new facets of the characters are revealed through the eyes of other characters. Not sure it was worth finishing, but I'm glad to be done.

The plot summary makes it sound like a black comedy, but the very graphic descriptions of rape, necrophilia, and dismemberment soon put paid to that idea. But having said that, if you've got the stomach for it, it's a great, tense thriller which leaves you alternatively appalled by and rooting for the main character, Masako Katori.

Four work friends in Tokyo get enmeshed in crime after one commits a spontaneous murder. In this gritty novel, the characters are built while the plot steadily moves forward and becomes much more propulsive toward the end. It‘s dark and disturbing and overall terrific, though there‘s one component of a character arc right at the end that I found unacceptable. Thanks to @vivastory for putting this one on my radar.

Hooked_on_books @vivastory I did, but the bullshit of Masako suddenly having pleasure during a rape and then holding Satako while he died, wanting him to live, was garbage and almost ruined the book for me. Out tells of four women who work the graveyard shift at a boxed lunch factory outside of Tokyo. One of them, in a domestic abuse situation, murders her husband & calls her co-worker Masako afterwards for advice. Masako is the calm one of the group. She's the unacknowledged leader & the other three often look to her for both advice & money. The repercussions of the murder & the decisions of the group ripple outwards👇

Well-ReadNeck I have this one on my TBR pile. Moving it to the top now!!! 4y
vivastory like a blood splattered rock thrown into a quiet pond. Kirino's book is highly addictive. From the moment I started it, all I wanted to do was read it. But it's not only plot driven storytelling. This is a substantial work of social criticism. I am hard pressed to think of another novel I've read recently that looks at class in the same way. In the sense that money will determine personal freedom & c 4y

#snacktime #24in48

Let's see if I can finish this book before the end of this #readathon. 😏

@24in48

Tamra I haven‘t seen the cranberry citrus at our Target - I want to try it! 5y
monkeygirlsmama @Tamra It's pretty good. This is the second box I've bought. My fav is the cucumber mint though. LoL 5y
Tamra @monkeygirlsmama I like that, but my favorite that I‘m in fact drinking now is the grapefruit. 😋 5y
monkeygirlsmama @Tamra I love that one too. My least favorite is the pineapple coconut. 5y
Tamra @monkeygirlsmama 😖 No thanks 5y

Perché una donna vuole sempre riuscire a sfiorare l'anima di un uomo. Non si può accontentare dell'aspetto esteriore! E l'anima che una donna vuole sfiorare è solo una, un'anima in armonia con la propria.

This was an intense and depressing Japanese thriller. So many trigger warnings! However, though it was messing with my mood, i still wanted to know what happened to the characters. I think it was overall a good and unique thriller.

Out is intense—not for the faint of heart. I spent many pages reading while my internal voice screamed “ewww.” But I couldn‘t stop. Kirino creates unforgettable characters, all thrown into the scumbucket of murder and crime.

It‘s a rubbernecker book. I couldn‘t look away, even though all I wanted was to be finished and move to a less disturbing book.

#Booked2018 #japanesethriller This was a slow start for me. Then all of a sudden these four women were consuming my thoughts and I couldn‘t wait to get back to the book. We know what happened and who did what early on, but the tension is more about the consequences, if any. Will someone tell? Will they get caught? Are there other dangers lurking? I‘m not sure how I feel about the ending, but it‘s still a pick for me.

Looking for some distraction this morning while I wait to be released. This is my choice for #booked2018 #japanesethriller prompt. (Cameo by @That-Bookish-Hiker —her bookmark design is in the book!)

I had surgery yesterday and everything went very well. Been sleeping a LOT while the anesthesia wears off. Just waiting for surgeons and paperwork before I can go home to heal.

Mollyanna Glad to hear the surgery went well! Hope you have a speedy recovery! 6y
